Genesis G90 Special Edition is likely inspired by a Bentley

Genesis Motors, the luxury vehicle division of South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company, takes a step further from their usual designs as they unveiled the G90 Special Edition - a vehicle that represents a marriage of luxury and technology. Hyundai also announced new developments at the latest Seoul Motor Show this week.

Dressed in a two-tone paint finish, the G90 Special Edition showcased three different versions. The first one came in a metallic brown and matte grey combo, the other one was a matte grey and silver, and last but not the least, a metallic blue and solid white finish - all of these colour combinations were “inspired by a finely-tailored gentleman’s pin-stripe suit” according to the company.

We strongly feel like the South Korean automaker is shying away from conservative designs and instead is leaning towards something different this time. The Special Edition vehicle features an upgraded interior with Nubuck leather trim, accent stitching, upgraded carpeting, and more. While each of them has a hand-painted coach line running all around the sides of the vehicle’s exterior. At first glance, you would think it is a Bentley. You’ll just be surprised that it is a Genesis when you have a closer look. Perhaps it’s because the former design director of Bentley, Luc Donckerwolke, has been leading the design brand since early last year.

Tjin Edition Hyundai Genesis primed up for 2015 SEMA show

TJIN Edition RoadShow has worked on its first official Hyundai vehicle for the 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. This new built is based on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and is dubbed as the Tjin Edition Hyundai Genesis.

At the core of the Tjin Edition Hyundai Genesis is the South Korean carmaker’s 3.8-liter Lambda V6 engine made more powerful by a Vortech supercharger kit (Vortech V3 Supercharger) supplied and tuned Bisimoto Engineering.

Tjin also gave this Lambda V6 engine with additional elements like Vortech front mount intercooler, a free-flowing Bisimoto exhaust system and Vortech blow-off valve. Rounding off the powertrain modifications for the Lambda V6 engine of the Tjin Edition Hyundai Genesis is an Optima battery. All of these upgrades leveled up the total output of the Lambda V6 engine from just 311 hp to more than 500 hp.

ARK Performance works its magic on SEMA-destined Solus Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Banking on the long-term relationship ARK Performance has with Hyundai Motor America, the company has released the details of the race-inspired Solus Genesis Coupe. According to ARK, the Genesis Coupe blends luxury and performance in order to compete with the likes of Lexus RC F and the BMW M4.

This will be the seventh consecutive vehicle that tuner company ARK has created for SEMA. The main reason for pairing luxury with performance was to allow it to go toe-to-toe with its top rivals across the world. Mainly based on the success of the 2014 AR550 Genesis Sedan, the design puts more emphasis on having a wider visual look.

With ARK’s trademarked “Solus” wide body kit, this gives the Genesis Coupe a more powerful look. Even its interior was renovated and now has a redesigned dashboard, race-bred steering wheel and gauges, with the right amount of carbon fiber.

Hyundai thinks of developing Genesis-based SUV

Sources told Reuters that Hyundai is thinking about developing bigger SUVs based on its Genesis luxury sedan. The automaker’s lineup is mostly sedans and it wasn’t able to exploit the SUV’s popularity in the U.S. The sources said however that the vehicle may start selling two or three years from now.

Among the obstacles that the automaker faces with its attempt to compete in the high-margin market for utility vehicles is its poor SUV track record, its having no pickup trucks, and the dominance of U.S. and Japanese brands. It’s not known for sure if Hyundai will release this model to the market, according to one source.

There may be problems with its brand power in the SUV segment. It’s also possible that oil prices will go up and hurt the market for non-frugal vehicles. Another source said that when it comes to bigger SUVs, Hyundai is “timid.” The automaker is looking into an internal proposal submitted in 2014 to fill a gap at the SUV lineup’s high end with Genesis-based SUVs.

After announcing the custom Bisimoto-tuned Sonata, Hyundai revealed another project that will make its debut at the 2014 SEMA Show. This time, the project is based on the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan and was developed in collaboration with ARK Performance. Dubbed Genesis AR550 sedan, the new high-performance vehicle is seen as a rival for German super-sedan rivals such as those from Mercedes-AMG, BMW M and Audi’s RS.

As you can see from the photos, exterior modifications are extreme and the Genesis features an AR Aero package designed by Infinite Auto Design, a new front bumper with carbon fiber front lip, wide front and rear fenders, new carbon fiber side sills, a rear trunk decklid, Crystal Project headlights upgrade as well as a new mesh for the front grille. Inside, we find Katzkin custom diamond stitched seats and panels.

In addition, the vehicle was fitted with a new ARK front strut reinforcement bar, front and rear stiffened sway bars, am Airrex premium air suspension system, ARK knuckles and control arms, a new Brembo brake kit and new ARK Lightweight Forged wheels. Under the hood, there is a 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine that produces 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque in the standard version.

It appears that the future of Genesis Coupe doesn’t look so bright as Hyundai is currently wrestling with the direction of its smaller rear-wheel drive cars. As you may know already, the Genesis Coupe lost its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from its powertrain lineup and its shape will remain the same for at least two years.

For the 2015MY, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe models are offered as standard with the 3.8-liter V6 engine that generates 348 hp at 6,400 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 5,100 rpm.

The engine is able to push the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in the lower five-second range, all the way to a top speed electronically limited at 149 mph or 240 km/h.

Hyundai’s 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will no longer be available on the 2015 Genesis Coupe, according to spokesman Derek Joyce. This means that the latest iteration of the Genesis Coupe will be powered by only the 3.8-liter V-6 engine.

Joyce said that equipment and packaging for the 2015 Genesis Coupe will be reconfigured to offset the loss of less-costly expensive models powered by the 2-liter turbo-four. The price difference between the current 2-liter turbo model (entry-level: $27,245, including shipping) is $3,000 compared to the V-6 Genesis Coupes ($30,245).

He said that Hyundai will be repackaging equipment to cater to every buyer of the Genesis Coupe -- from an entry-level buyer to a fully-loaded customer. Models powered by the turbocharged four-cylinder engine resemble like lightweight import sports car while those run by the V-6 takes after traditional American pony cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

Hyundai introduced the all-new 2015 Genesis at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 2015 Genesis is a bold step forward for Hyundai and as you can se from the photos, the vehicle now features the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. For those who don’t know, the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 encapsulates a trio of main design elements such as fluid aesthetics, the modern Hyundai look and a premium ambience.

Don’t worry, the fluidic forms are still present but with a more refined and precise presentation. The first visual impact with the 2015 Hyundai Genesis shows the striking hexagonal front grille, HID headlamps, LED indicators and fog lamps.

In profile, the Genesis features fluid lines and blended surfaces, a sleek C-pillar that emphasizes the sporty styling. At the rear, we find the full-LED taillamps. Owners of the new Hyundai Genesis sedan could use Google Glass for “pre-drive” operations like remote starts and route planning, according to Hyundai Motor Co. Hyundai will offer an app designed for Glass and other “wearable” electronic devices starting with the 2015 Genesis. The feature will be an extension of Hyundai’s current Blue Link in-car system that provides diagnostic and maintenance services, the carmaker said.

According to Hyundai spokesman Miles Johnson, the Glass application is only “for pre-drive operations” not when one is behind the wheel. “The goal is that when you get to the car to start your trip, the drive is less stressful,” Johnson told Bloomberg. Hyundai, however, is not alone. Nissan Motor Co. and Mercedes-Benz earlier expressed plans to incorporate wearable data devices with their vehicles.

Google has released technical specifications for its Glass computing device in April 2013 to allow software developers to create apps for the Web-enabled glasses. Google has been investing in Glass as it gambles on consumers shifting their focus to wireless devices that allow them to easily take photos, check e-mails or listen to music without having to look at their smartphones or computers. Hyundai is demonstrating the Glass-enabled system Jan. 6, 2014 in Las Vegas, before the International Consumer Electronics Shows, Johnson said.

Hyundai is exploring wearable technology with its all-new 2015 Genesis. The South Korean carmaker’s Blue Link platform features remote start and service information quickly accessible via wearable devices like Google Glass and others. These wearable devices could help car owners save time as well as access a new level of convenience by allowing remote interaction with the vehicle without having to pull out and access their smartphone.

Hyundai is planning to unveil a Blue Link Glassware application in 2015 with the all-new 2015 Genesis sedan. “We see wearables as a technology trend, expanding from fitness and health monitoring to broader applications,” according to Barry Ratzlaff, executive director, Customer Connect and Service Business Development, Hyundai Motor America.

He said that as a leader in connected car technology, Hyundai is always exploring new ways to use technology to enhance the ownership experience for its customers. He noted that wearables are a “great way to extend the experience outside of the vehicle” by leveraging them to quickly access remote features and deliver timely vehicle information.”

Hyundai is planning to start selling its new Genesis large sedan in Europe in 2014 as part of attempts to challenge the home advantage of luxury brands BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The South Korean carmaker said that the Genesis will be its first premium sedan sold in Europe, where it is trying to get rid of its image as a value-for-money brand.

Hyundai said in a statement that it has to overcome the challenge of competing with established European brands. The carmaker said it expects the Genesis to play a crucial role in improving Hyundai’s brand recognition.

Hyundai recently revealed the rendering of the new Genesis, which is actually the car’s first major overhaul in almost six years. Hyundai is planning to launch the new Genesis in South Korea in November, with further rollouts in United States and other countries to follow in 2014.

Last week we showed you the first photo with the all-new 2015 Genesis Sedan. As a result, Hyundai released the first renderings with the 2015 Genesis Sedan. Looking at the photos we can see that the new Genesis continues the unique design philosophy ‘Fluidic Sculpture’, which was introduced back in 2009.

Still, the new car will be the first model to adopt the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 and comes with a singular hexagonal grille, pleasant design, rich visuotactile colour, material and finishing of the car. Inside, the 2015 Genesis focuses on Human Machine Interface (HMI) and lets drivers intuitively recognize vehicle functions. In terms of safety, Hyundai improved its car with new body structure.

According to the press release, the torsional and bending stiffness have been increased by applying more ultra-high-strength steel, hot-stamping and double-section structure on the front. Passenger safety was also improved thanks to the new advanced seatbelt functions such as Emergency Fastening Device system (EFD), which tightly fastens passengers in crashes, and Pre-Safe seatbelt, which warns of danger in advance by tightening the seatbelt.

Hyundai is recalling around 27,500 Genesis sedans -- covering 2009 to 2012 model years -- in the United States to address a possible brake issue. The South Korean carmaker said the recall on the sedans, which were produced between April 1, 2008, and March 16, 2012, was announced to replace the brake fluid.

Hyundai had already commenced a service campaign in March 2013 to replace the brake fluid in the affected sedans as they were delivered to dealers.

A spokesman for the carmaker said that the braking fluid had been replaced in around 60 percent, or about 40,000, of the vehicles. However, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a preliminary evaluation following the receipt of 23 consumer complaints claiming reduced brake effectiveness, according to documents filed online. Many of the complaints said the problem was diagnosed as a faulty antilock brake system module.

A new all-wheel-drive system will be available for the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis, according to the automaker. This system is dubbed as the HTRAC, with the “H” in the name standing for Hyundai and “TRAC” referring to “Traction.” Unfortunately, Hyundai has yet to reveal the revamped Genesis’ pricing, powertrain details and date of launch.

Since the sedan made its debut in 2009, it has been offered with rear-wheel drive. Hyundai said that it is planning to have the all-wheel-drive system available on other future models that still have to be named. The all-wheel-drive Hyundai Genesis is aimed at upscale rivals like the Cadillac CTS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus GS, which all offer all-wheel drive.

This new system is meant to attract luxury consumers in U.S. states that have cold weather. Hyundai said that depending on road and driving conditions, the HTRAC system electronically controls torque split between the front and rear axles. As a result, it offers more stability on slippery roads as well as in corners.

Hyundai is collaborating once again with Bisimoto Engineering to develop a 1,000-hp Genesis Coupe for the 2013 SEMA show next month in Las Vegas. Bisimoto Engineering –known for transforming production-grade engines into dynamic and excellent powerplants – eyes to create a Bisimoto 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe that will boast of a turbocharged factory-based 3.8-liter V6 engine that can provide up to 1,000 hp of output.

The Bisimoto powertrain employs newly designed internal components while having the naturally-aspirated Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec engine as the core building block.  The Bisimoto 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe offers the merger between reliability of a street car and the shocking power of a racing.

Bisi Ezerioha, owner of Bisimoto Engineering, remarked that the key to building reliable, high-horsepower engines goes beyond the design, engineering and fabrication of performance parts since the core engine should be strong enough to weather  advanced modifications.

Hyundai’s HCD-14 Genesis Concept was named as the “Concept Car of the Year” for 2013 at the 12th annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards. It was also named as the “Most Significant Concept of the Year” for getting the highest score among the category winning concepts. HCD-14 previewed Hyundai’s design direction for its future premium vehicles at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year.

The award marks the second time that Hyundai has received an award. Its Genesis Coupe was named as the “Production Preview Concept Vehicle of the Year” in 2008 for the Genesis Coupe. According to juror Bob Kroupa, one of the Principals of the Automotive Writers Group, Hyundai’s HCD-14 “introduces future premium vehicle design, advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls and spirited driving dynamics.”

He noted that the concept’s rear hinged back doors and fastback coupe design, “add to the WOW factor.” The “Concept Car” category acknowledges vehicles designed for carrying passengers. The HCD-14 Genesis topped this highly competitive category, beating other concepts like the Honda EV-STER and Toyota Corolla Furia. The HCD-14 Genesis gained recognition for its state-of-the-art features and improved driver experience.
