2013 IAA: 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG shown in Frankfurt [Live Photos]

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG had its official introduction, after it has been teased and later leaked. The new model, which is set to have its public unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show, has the usual AMG modifications when it comes to styling. It features bolder bumpers, thicker side sills, bigger 19-inch alloy wheels and a quad exhaust setup that make the car appear more menacing.

But then, others claim that it should still seem meaner. It is powered by an updated Euro 6-compliant twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter engine, producing 585 bhp (436 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft). The direct-injected gasoline engine includes Piezo injectors and an all-aluminum crankcase that comes with four valves per cylinder (with camshaft adjustment).

The mill features an air-to-water intercooler and an ECO start/stop function. It gets a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission that comes in three modes: "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual). In comparison to the former model, the new S63 AMG is lighter by as much as 220 lbs (100 kg) due to its use of AMG forged alloys, a lightweight lithium-ion battery (-20 kg / 44 lbs) and a two-piece braking system that weighs less.

2013 IAA: Elmiraj Concept previews future top-end Cadillac unit [Live Photos]

If you are wondering what Cadillac's future lineup-topping unit may look like, then you just have to see its Elmiraj grand coupe concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In a statement, General Motors said that the Elmiraj explores "new dimensions for Cadillac's ongoing expansion."  At 205 inches, the rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe is 3 inches longer than the XTS, which is currently considered as the biggest car in Cadillac's lineup.

The Elmiraj is underpinned by a platform that also underpins "an ongoing Cadillac vehicle development project slated for future production," according to GM. This project may refer to a large rwd sedan that is being developed for the top of its lineup to rival the Mercedes-Benz S class, BMW 7 series and other top-end sedans. The Elmiraj has a large grille that dons a new Cadillac emblem. It lets go of classic laurel wreath while leaving behind a streamlined version of the shield.

Sources told Automotive News that the new badge may appear on production cars as early as 2015, although a Cadillac spokesman has said a decision has yet to be made. In a statement, GM said that the design idea for a revised crest "reflects the fact that Cadillac's unmistakable symbol has evolved dozens of times through history to mark new eras or design achievements."

2013 IAA: 2014 Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo debuts in Frankfurt [Live Photos]

The new Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo saloon and estate was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The BMW 3-series-based D3 Bi-Turbo is powered by the same twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine used by the XD3 and D5 models. This engine can deliver 345bhp and 516lb ft. This marks the first time for Alpina to install a six-cylinder diesel engine on the D3.

A four-cylinder engine powered the new D3’s predecessor in 2005. This remains the top-selling model throughout Alpina’s history. A total of over 2000 units were sold. The engine, which is EU6-compliant, offers a combined economy of 53.3mpg and can emit 139g/km of CO2. The vehicle can sprint from zero to 62mph in 4.6sec and can reach a top speed of 173mph.

As a result, the new diesel saloon can outpace the BMW M135i, which can accelerate from zero to 62mph in 4.9sec and has a limited top speed of 155mph. The D3 Bi-Turbo is offered in both saloon and estate (Touring) bodystyles. Meanwhile, right-hand drive models are offered with standard rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is offered as an option for left-hand drive vehicles.

Brabus is out to showcase what its 'B63S-700' performance kit can do for Mercedes-Benz's niche model – the G63 AMG 6x6. On display at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Brabus B63S-700 6x6 was made to be even more potent and exclusive. The G63 AMG 6x6 is already quite impressive, with standard versions capable of delivering 536bhp and 561bhp, distributed to all six wheels through an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission.

However, Brabus was able to raise this figure to 691bhp and 708lb ft. These major improvements of 155bhp and 147lb ft, are owed to the installation of a couple of new turbochargers, a modified ECU, high-flow catalytic convertors, a sports exhaust system and the extra heat shielding for the intake system.

Brabus also tweaked the six-wheeled 3775kg powerhouse to be able to accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in 7.4sec. But then, its top speed remains at 99mph. The speed was limited to protect the 37-inch off-road tires instead of the powertrain. In addition, the B63S-700 6x6 features an exhaust valve system that provides 'Sport' and 'Coming Home' modes.

Visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show witnessed the debut of the 2014 Range Rover Evoque, which features several modifications, of which the most significant is the use of a new nine-speed automatic gearbox. The nine-speed gearbox that ZF supplied was first seen earlier in the year at the Geneva Motor Show as a prototype. Production has already begun for this gearbox.

It will be available as standard for the Land Rover-made Evoque’s one petrol and two diesel engines. Land Rover said that its fuel economy rating is better by up to 11.4% while its CO2 emissions is lower by up to 9.5% in some models. The most frugal – the front-wheel-drive, 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel version -- returns 57.6mpg when combined and has CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

Range Rover also gave the 2014 Evoque an Active Driveline ‘on demand’ four-wheel drive system. This new feature is offered as an option. For improved fuel economy, the all-wheel-drive Evoques makes a switch to front-drive mode during steady driving conditions above 22mph.

Renault brought the Twizy Renaultsport F1 concept car – a one-off that is the product of the cooperation between Renaultsport and Renaultsport F1 engineers - at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). What they accomplished was to turn the Renault Twizy electric city car into a quasi-Formula 1 car. A Renault F1-supplied KERS is used on the Twizy Renaultsport F1 concept car.

As a result, it can match the 0-62mph sprint time of 6.0sec of the Renaultport Mégane 265, which is Renault’s fastest road car. This project was started to prove that F1 technology can be used on road cars via the integration of a KERS in the Twizy that duplicates those used on Renault-powered F1 cars.

The 30kg-in-weight KERS system uses an electric motor, lithium-ion batteries and a control unit. It takes the place of the rear seat in the Twizy, making the concept a one-seater.
