2013 Infiniti M gets 5-Star overall Euro NCAP rating

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program crash testing has given a five-star rating to the 2013 Infiniti M sedans. The new range doesn’t actually have any visual modifications compared to the 2012 lineup. The five-star top rating is now harder to achieve after the NHTSA upgraded the NCAP test for 2013 models.

But then, the modifications to the test meant that all 2013 Infiniti M models have earned a five-star overall crash test rating. The new test added up to the five-star achievement for Infiniti’s biggest sedans by combining a series of accessible crash avoidance technology, a five-star side crash rating, and four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover testing.

Infiniti M previously got a four-star overall rating. So that a better score could be given to the M sedans, the revised test of the NHTSA now considers crash avoidance technology. M models are equipped with stability control and six airbags as standard.

Infiniti has released a new promotional video that boldly pits itself against the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid as it attempts to prove that it has the fastest hybrid sedan on the market. The video begins with a Stig lookalike getting into the car and pulling up to the starting line. The 360-hp Infiniti M hybrid is visible in the Porsche’s reflection.

It’s later shown that the person driving the Infiniti is an average man wearing a helmet and no race suit.

A front view gives us the 380hp Porsche smoking the tires off the line only to discover that the shot was from the Infiniti’s side mirror. The M is named the fastest full hybrid in the world as it arrives at the finish line one car-length ahead. This claim is verified by a lawyer from the Guinness World Records. The 2012 M hybrid is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 360hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The Infiniti M hasn’t been selling well in Europe. To turn things around in 2012, Infiniti will be offering two Mercedes-sourced four-cylinder engines – the turbocharged 204hp 1.8 in the C250 CGI and the 170hp 2.1 turbodiesel that’s used on the C220 CDI. These two versions will be displayed at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012. Infiniti has yet to reveal pricing. The current Infiniti M is available in Europe with either a 320hp 3.7 gasoline V6 or a 238hp diesel V6.

Its hybrid version produces 365hp from a 3.5 V6. U.S. buyers will not be fazed by these figures but it’s a different story for those in Europe since cars are frequently taxed based (or at least partly-based) on their engine displacement. The fact that gasoline is priced several times higher is a major issue as well.

Daimler and Renault-Nissan already have an arrangement that makes this collaboration possible. There may be a project where these two automakers will be working even more closely. It’s believed that they will develop a small Infiniti hatchback that’s built on the same platform as the next-generation Mercedes A-Class and is expected to debut at around 2014.

Mitsubishi announced today that it will launch a new flagship luxury model! Of course there is no surprise here, but the Japanese manufacturer said that the new car will be a rebadged version of the Nissan Fuga sedan a.k.a. the Infiniti M in the United States. The new car will make its debut next summer in Japan, but Mitsubishi is also considering launching the new model overseas.

The agreement between Infiniti and Nissan also includes a version of Mitsubishi's Minicab-MiEV all-electric commercial minivan, which will be launched wearing a Nissan badge.

For those who don’t know, the two companies also signed a cooperation agreement in December 2010, when Nissan agreed to provide its NV200 Vanette compact van to Mitsubishi, says Autonews. Of course, selling a rebadged version of the Nissan Fuga is not quite a surprise for us, as president Osamu Masuko said earlier this year the plan was under study.

The Guinness Book of World Records has recently named Infiniti’s M35h as the full hybrid car with the fastest acceleration in the world. Tim Pollard, a journalist, was behind the wheels during the test drive at the Santa Pod Raceway in the UK. The newest model designed for Europe garnered an average of 13.9031 seconds covering the 400m-quarter run.

The 364PS fuel/electric sedan is in fact Infiniti’s standard production model. It was tested last Tuesday, 23rd of August 2011 at the hometown of FIA European Drag Racing Championships.

Infiniti’s M35h achieved a combination of V6 power and electric motor torque at 0-rpm. It passes through the computerized timer at the end of every round with an excessive speed of 100mph or 160km/h. The outstanding performance also showed low CO2 emission of only 162g/km. At the same time, the gasoline engine’s combined cycle consumed an average of 7.0L/100km.

One of the aftermarket creations that stood out early on at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon is the Impul 651S, a tuning pack intended for the new Infinity M. The Japanese tuning firm made modifications on both the exterior and its technical aspects. The premium saloon received engine tweaks that include a new exhaust system, larger throttle bodies and an ECU remap.

The upgrades are available for the M37 and M25 versions. However, the M56 (which held a strong potential) has not been modified in any way. According to a company statement, the EXTRA POWER KIT results to more power and leads to “unparalleled responsiveness.”

The device consists of IMPUL Hi Power Control Unit and big throttle valves. Power is boosted further with the use of premium gasoline for the EXTRA POWER KIT. The company explained that throttle valves will enhance the performance of a car that already has the IMPUL Hi Power Control Unit.

Infiniti is set to unveil its first hybrid -- the 2012 M35h sedan -- in the spring of 2011. As Infiniti has yet to sell a hybrid model, officials will attempt to determine which marketing chord appeals to its potential customers: fuel economy or performance.

Ben Poore, Infiniti's Business Unit vice president says that its marketing strategy will emphasize that hybrids always have been about compromise.

Infiniti will use the late-winter, adrenaline-pumped college basketball scene to introduce the M35h to TV viewers. Infiniti has been sharpening its image as the Euro-influenced Japanese performance brand, a rival for Audi and BMW.

An audible pedestrian warning system will be offered in the world’s first hybrid vehicle as standard. Infiniti said that this system, which is installed in Infiniti’s upcoming M35h model, features a variable pitch and volume tone synthesizer. It is computer-controlled and it works automatically from 0-19 mph. Infiniti clams that this warning sound is a 'sine-wave', audible to all age groups and produces a minimal level of noise pollution.

Whether the sound is in high or low frequency depends on the vehicle speed and if the M35h is accelerating or decelerating. The car is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with 302bhp and this is paired with the hybrid’s 67bhp electric motor. The car has a 0-60mph sprint time of 5.9 seconds and it has a fuel economy figure of 39mpg.

The Infiniti M35h will become the world’s first hybrid to feature an audible pedestrian warning system as standard when it goes on sale in six months’ time. The ground-breaking high performance hybrid model, which can travel further and faster in silent electric-only mode than other hybrids, utilises a range of distinctive sounds to help ensure the safety of other road users. Infiniti broke new ground when it rolled out the Infiniti M35h in 2012.
