Facelifted 2018 Infiniti Q50 costs slightly higher, with base price of $34,200

Infiniti has just given the 2018 Q50 an upgrade - making it look fresher with a modern twist inside and out. The company had also given the sedan their ProPilot autonomous driving technology. With all the upgrades, we should not be surprised that the 2018 Infiniti Q50 gets a price hike too - now starting at $34,200 excluding the $905 destination and handling fee.

Under the hood of the updated model is the same engine you will find from the 2017 model. The entry level 2.0t Pure still gets a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine that generates 208 horsepower (155 kilowatts). The 2018 model costs $250 higher than the previous generation. Customers can go for an all-wheel drive option for an additional $2,000.

What comes after the base model would be the Q50 2.0t Luxe, previously known as the Premium trim. It still gets the same 2.0 liter turbocharged engine, but is pricier at $36,550, or $38,550 for the all-wheel drive option. The AWD Luxe is the most expensive 2.0 liter variant that one could get. Next in line is the beefier Q50 3.0t Luxe, with a 3.0 liter turbocharged engine generating 300 horsepower (223 kilowatts). The most affordable variant with this engine starts at $38,950, and you can get it in all-wheel-drive for $40,950.

Infiniti is recalling a number of 2014 Q50 sedans over a software glitch in its steer-by-wire system. According to Infiniti, 23 vehicles are affected by the recall. The recall covers Q50 sedans fitted with direct adaptive steering software that could disable the power steering software when its engine compartment reaches freezing temperatures, Nissan told the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While a mechanical backup system that prevents steering failure kicks in via a clutch if the direct adaptive steering fails, NHTSA said the backup may not engage in time if the direct adaptive steering fails, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. Owners of the 23 Q50s have received instructions to have their cars towed to the nearest Infiniti dealership.

Q50 features an innovative steer-by-wire system that Infiniti spent ten years developing. It is the only steer-by-wire system available in a passenger car in the US.  The steer-by-wire system is designed in a way that steering and the front wheels would have any actual physical connection. Instead, the Q50 employs a computer and a steering angle-actuator to direct the front wheels.

Earlier today we told you that the 2014 Lexus IS250 failed to receive the “Recommended” status from Consumer Reports magazine, but it appears that another Japanese vehicle failed as well: the 2014 Infiniti Q50. Although the Infiniti G models were one of the highest-rated sedans, the redesigned model wearing the Q designation seems to have lost its way, according to Consumer Reports.

Just like the 2014 Lexus IS250, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 comes with dull steering and the handling is not as good as the one provided by the G37 for example.

Furthermore, the new Q50 also fails to provide the same ride comfort as the G. Consumer Reports says that the Q50 can’t take on the higher-rated models from its class.
