2018 Paris Motor Show: Infiniti Project Black S explores transfer of F1 dual-hybrid powertrain to road cars

Infiniti is planning to commence the electrification of vehicle portfolio in 2021. All-new Infiniti models will be electrified either as fully electric models or hybrid units. These models will be headlined by the Q Inspiration Concept serving as the basis for the carmaker’s future electrified vehicle platform. But even before Infiniti launches this plan in metal, it is previewing its vision of it electrified future through a new prototype.

Actually, this project – the Infiniti Project Black S – was first made known to the public last year through the 2017 design study. Now, the Infiniti Project Black S is resurrected as a new prototype that boasts of a hybrid electric powertrain. Drawing on expertise from across the holy alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, the Project Black S represents the commitment of Infiniti to develop exciting high-performance electrified powertrains.

Both the 2017 and 2018 Project Black S models are based from the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 sports coupe. The 2017 show car was essentially an initial vision for motorsport-inspired aesthetics and aerodynamics. It was an early design vision to develop a highly focused dual-hybrid super sports car. Infiniti Q60 Red Alpha Concept shows us a new range of accessories

After several teasers, we have finally seen Infiniti’s newest creation. Infiniti built the Q60 Red Alpha Concept with the main intention for it to go fast. That is why it has a gutted interior and a huge drag racing parachute attached at the back.

However, during the 2017 SEMA Show, Infiniti announced that there will be a whole range of performance parts specifically for the Red Sport 400 versions of the Infiniti Q50 and Q60.

Thanks to AMS Performance, they developed a number of upgrades for the Red Alpha concept car. Customers can get their hands on most of these starting early next year at Infiniti showrooms.

Infiniti and RenaultSport Formula One Team collaborate in Q60 Project Black S

A new premium performance model could be coming for Infiniti if a partnership with Renault’s Formula One team becomes a definite success. Yes, Infiniti and the RenaultSport Formula One Team have entered into a collaborative venture – Project Black S -- to create a hybrid performance model derived from the Infiniti Q60.

This collaboration between Infiniti and the RenaultSport Formula One Team will be represented by the Project Black S concept car. So far, the venture between these high-end auto personalities has taken the shape of the Project Black S concept car – featuring Formula One-inspired technology -- that will be unveiled to the global public during a special event a night before 2017 Geneva Motor Show formally starts.

According to Infiniti, the Project Black S is a radical reinterpretation of the Q60 coupe with a prominent aerodynamic design. As it is, the Project Black S provides a preview on how a hybrid powertrain derived from motorsport – not less than Formula One -- could superbly improve the overall performance of a production car from Infiniti. This performance hybrid powertrain on the Project Black S makes use of the so-called ‘energy recovery system’ (ERS) that is found in RenaultSport’s F1 car. This ERS – not yet employed by any production road car -- is designed to harvest or recover energy in the form of electric power and deploy it to significantly boost the powertrain’s output and torque. Hence, a car with ERS is able to accelerate without any lag.

Infiniti Q60 makes history as first US-spec car to arrive in Cuba since 1958

For the first time in fifty-eight years, Infiniti registers its first US-Spec Q60 Coupe in Cuba. American products have not been allowed entry into Cuba for six decades. But it seems things are going to change and get better. We learned that Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti’s executive director for design, considers Cuba to be his homeland. Hmm. Suddenly this looks like a scene from a novel.

To continue along the story, Albaisa drove the Q60 to Cuba not just to find his roots but also to introduce the sedan’s highly modern design to the locals. As expected, the company has never felt as excited before for the main man and documented his journey in video. It’s more of a personal trip but since Infiniti followed him all the way there, then it makes a good place for everyone to unwind.

To some, Infiniti’s idea may appear like a stunt. But for us, it gives us a certain satisfaction to watch the stunning Q60 stand out on the street among old vintage cars and pedicabs. We love how the video showcases Cuba, an amazing island surrounded with colourful buildings influenced by Spanish architecture.

A few more days to go and the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show will be opened for the public with quite a number of car manufacturers confirming their attendance. As a matter of fact, a number of carmakers have already presented a preview or have disclosed their lineup for the LA Auto Show. One of these carmakers is premium carmaker Infiniti. Nissan’s luxury division said its lineup for the LA Auto Show would include the Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration Concept, its new advanced variable compression VC-Turbo engine, the Q60 Neiman Marcus Limited Edition and the 2017 Infiniti Q60 3.0t Sport.

Infiniti first unveiled the QX Sport Inspiration concept at Beijing Auto Show in late April and early May. This SUV concept provides a preview of how future mid-size crossovers from Infiniti might look like – such as the next iteration of QX70. As unveiled in Beijing, the QX Sport Inspiration concept shows an SUV would appear once Infiniti's contemporary design language is applied. It features a sharper front end, muscular and taut profile lines as well as a flowing roofline. For the LA Auto Show, Infiniti wrapped the QX Sport Inspiration concept in a special shade of matte grey. It rides on a set of larger 22-inch bronze wheels that come with matching brake calipers.

Meanwhile, Infiniti’s new VC-Turbo (Variable Compression Turbo) engine – first unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show – is regarded as the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine. VC-Turbo basically combines the output of a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine and the torque and efficiency of an advanced diesel powertrain but sans the usual emission levels. VC-Turbo could provide as much power as a six-cylinder gasoline engine -- with target output of around 200 kW (268 hp / 272 PS) and target torque of 390 Nm – while consuming much less fuel. It is also much lighter and more compact than V6 units with comparable outputs.

Powered by a high-performance 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine, the new Infiniti Q60 features a much higher output than any vehicles released so far by the company.

The Infiniti Q60 Concept was finally unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and as expected, the vehicle previews company’s next sports coupe. What’s more interesting is that the two-door fastback is a concept for which Infiniti has a firm and clear intent for production. Regarding the design, the Q60 Concept follows the same philosophy as the Q80 Inspiration Concept, unveiled back in 2014 at the Paris Motor Show.

The Q60 Concept is 4690 mm (184.6 inches) long, 1865 mm (73.4 inches) wide and 1370 mm (53.9 inches) high. Just like the Q80 Inspiration, the Q60 design is dominated by the double arch grille, aggressive headlights as well as by the stylish front bumper.

From the side, we find the 21-inch wheels, which fill up the wheel arches and interesting side sills descending from the front fenders. The rear end shows stylish LED taillights and an aggressively designed rear bumper with integrated exhaust tailpipes.

Just ahead of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Infiniti unveiled its latest Q60 Concept, a vehicle that previews an upcoming premium sports coupe. Clearly inspired by the Q80 Inspiration Concept that was unveiled back in October at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the new Q60 Concept features a low roofline, while the aerodynamic gills located behind the front wheel arches are inspired by the Q50 Eau Rouge Concept.

In addition, there are new 21-inch wheels inspired by jet turbines blades, with black spokes in a combination of mattes and chromes which stretch to the edge.

Inside, the Q60 Concept arrives with a variety of leathers that provide the perfect balance of comfort and support, but also with plenty of legroom for the rear passengers as it is a genuine “2+2” coupe. The quilted leather seats are also inspired by the Q80 Inspiration Concept.

For the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Infiniti prepared the Q60 Concept, a vehicle that previews a new vehicle as well as a new design philosophy for the upcoming models. The teaser released by the Japanese company owned by Nissan shows muscular lines, with well-defined contours.

The wheels are placed out at the corners and the Q60 Concept, while the overall proportions make an unmistakable design statement and add to the exhilaration of the performance coupe. We also expect to see plenty of design elements borrowed from the Q80 Inspiration Concept, unveiled by Infiniti at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

This four-door fastback featured a big front grille as well as stylish LED headlights, while the rear end showed LED taillights and chromed tailpipes. Under the hood, the Q80 Inspiration featured a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine, combined with an electric motor.

Infiniti is preparing a big surprise for the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, according to company’s executive design director Alfonso Albaisa. Next year, we will see a new concept car from Infiniti that previews the next-generation Q60 and looks very close to the production version.

For those who don’t know, the vehicle was also confirmed by Infiniti’s chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura, who said that the upcoming Q60 will be a little big bigger than the BMW 4-Series and smaller than a 6-Series.

When it comes to engines, the Q60 might surprise us with the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 engine found on the Nissan GT-R and capable to deliver 545 hp (400 kW). Still, the powerful engine will be available only if the Q50 Eau Rouge Concept will be approved for production.
