Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will be discontinued

From the latest interview with Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran by Automotive News, we learned that the company is letting go of its zero-emissions hatchback a.k.a. the B-Class Electric Drive effective on the third quarter of this year. It hasn’t even been three years yet since it started selling in the market in December 2013. The reason behind its departure isn’t only caused by the EV’s obvious poor sales performance, but also because Mercedes-Benz will soon to renovate its manufacturing facility in Restatt, Germany.

Details about replacing this model have not been revealed yet but the factory will be converted mainly for Mercedes Benz’s upcoming compact model range. By 2018, the German car manufacturer is looking to launch an all-new A-Class hatchback along with other compact vehicle models. While the traditionally powered B-Class maintains its production course, Mercedes sees to it that its newly developed EQ sub brand will find the new range of EVs ready for take-off. More than ten vehicles with no combustion engines are being prepared for launch all the way until 2025. All these come with an investment amounting to $11.7 Billion.

It seems Mercedes finally knows what to expect as far as electrification is involved especially after setting out the Concept EQ last 2016 in Paris. Though the concept model is actually a crossover, talks about another EQ concept are strong and it seems to be heading its way to this year’s Frankfurt Motorshow. If so, Mercedes is looking to unveil a production hatchback EV that will probably rival the BMW i3, if not exceed it. Rumors also suggest that it is set to arrive as a road-going model by 2020.

Apple shows 'Do Not Disturb While Driving' mode on the future iOS 11 featured on iPhone and iPad

In previous reports, Nissan came up with a lifesaving solution that will address the pressing issue of distracted driving in the form of Signal Shield Concept: The vehicle's arm rest compartment will be converted into a Faraday cage-like area where you can place your mobile device and when the lid is closed, the system will immediately set up a silent zone that will block all the phone's incoming and outgoing cellular activities, Bluetooth and even Wi-fi connections. It is really a cool safety concept coming from the Japanese automaker, and now Apple will also contribute to that cause and is now planning to release a safety feature geared towards drivers.

Have you ever gotten the urge to check your text messages, Facebook notifications and Instagram while driving? Apple wants you to stop the dangerous habit with a new feature called "Do Not Disturb While Driving." DNDWD feature was revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference and will be launched as part of iOS 11 for the iPad and iPhone this coming fall. The feature will be activated when the cellular phone will notice that the user is in a vehicle, and is not using Apple CarPlay at that time, and will block any incoming notifications.

Furthermore, it can even send automatic text message replies that will indicate that the phone's owner is currently driving. DNDWD utilizes information about Bluetooth connectivity and adjacent Wifi networks to know if the phone is in a moving vehicle, according to Endgadget. The feature will also be immediately allowed to function when the mobile device is situated in a running car, although passengers or the person behind the wheel with no regard for safety can manually override the feature. IOS will provide the feature with no payment required, and it will be available this fall for the iPhone 5s to the newest iPhone.

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the delivery of over 1 million B-Class since the sports tourer was launched in 2005. The B-Class has been logging a good performance in Germany and is currently considered the market leader in the compact MPV sector. Mercedes considered Germany as the largest market for the B-Class, followed by China.

According to Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales, the B-Class is the perfect combination of “sporty design, impressive driving dynamics and incomparable driving comfort,” making it popular with customers. Källenius noted that the current B-Class model is allowing Mercedes to penetrate the most diverse customer groups, “from families with children to active seniors.”

B-Class also proved popular with fleet customers, being voted Corporate Car of the Year in 2013. Likewise, the most popular engines for the B-Class are the B 180 petrol and diesel engines, each accounting for around 30 percent of sales. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the petrol engines powering its A- and B-Class already meet the required emission limits as set by EURO 6, two years before the standard comes into effect on September 1, 2014. As a matter of fact, Mercedes engines have already undercut the particulate limits being introduced for the first time for petrol engines.

Mercedes also offers to recode models that have already been delivered to buyers. The direct-injection petrol engines in the A 180, A 200 and A 250, and their corresponding models in the B-Class were able to undercut the emission limits thanks especially to advanced Mercedes-Benz technology.

The technology also enabled direct-injection petrol engines to undercut the strict particle number limit of 6 x 1011 per km, which would only become compulsory in 2017 on the second stage of EURO 6.

An electric version of the Smart ForTwo is available from Daimler, which holds a 4.7% stake in Tesla. The battery packs are supplied by Tesla for the second-generation Smart EV.

In the fall, Daimler will start the production of the third-generation Smart EV, with the use of its own batteries and electric motor. Furthermore, the source said that it intends to offer a B-class hybrid in 2014, which will have a small internal combustion engine since the range-extender has been postponed. The source said that zero-emission vehicles get more favorable classifications and higher incentives than vehicles with a range extender.

Service advisers at 34 Sonic Automotive Inc. stores are utilizing iPads as part of operations and have notice the increase in repair orders. At these stores where service iPads are used, customer-pay business is increasing. For one, grosses per repair order have increased by 8% on average at Lexus dealerships and 11% percent at Toyota stores. Last October, Apple, iPad's manufacturer, even recognized the accomplishments of Sonic during the gadget maker's earning conference call. In April, all Sonic stores will be equipped with service department iPads. Also, sales representatives have already received iPads. Sonic President Scott Smith disclosed that they have made a "huge, huge, huge, multiple-tens-of-millions-of-dollars commitment to go this way," adding that this is just going to get bigger.

He disclosed that they are rolling out the iPads and iPhones to technicians, service writers, salespeople, F&I and porters. "It's not cheap," he admitted. Sonic, the third biggest retailer in the nation, is investing $57 million this year on technology. It is spending much to equip its frontline employees with Apple gadgets that are expected to boost their productivity, persuade clients to spend more and increase loyalty. Unlike other large public dealership groups, Sonic is staying away from acquisitions and instead, it is investing internally.

Other huge retailers are also utilizing tablets in their operations, but Sonic's initiative is on the leading edge. Leaders at AutoNation have disclosed that they will be equipping their service and sales employees with tablet computers in 2012 and 2013. Asbury chief Craig Monaghan foresees a day when most areas of the dealership are using tablets instead of PCs. Asbury has utilized iPads in some store pilots. Group 1 Automotive is utilizing tablets in service departments at some stores. Lithia and Penske are operating service department pilots.
