It has already been 20 years since smart entered into the world of automotive. But smart has no intentions of stopping right now, so it is unveiling a new concept car that doesn’t just celebrate its 20th anniversary, but also provides a glimpse of its vision into the future while still linking with the past. smart will unveiling the new forease two-passenger concept car at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.
Derived from a current vehicle – the smart EQ fortwo cabrio – the new smart forease is the carmaker’s statement of urbanity and individual style, representing the coolness of the metropolis while demonstrating a truly free spirit. While boasting of a seemingly futuristic look, the forease boasts of openness and minimalistic style, as inspired by smart’s pioneering concept vehicles like the crossblade (2001) and the forspeed (2011).
Essentially, the smart forease concept car takes practicality into a simple level, living up to smart’s original motto of “reduce to the max.” While overly minimalistic with details just reduced to the essential, the new forease gives a new meaning to the brand’s definition of emotionality, lifestyle and attitude.Read the entire article 2018 Paris Motor Show: Smart celebrates 20 years by unveiling forease concept
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Smart brand in the United States. The company aims to celebrate this milestone by launching a special edition 10th Anniversary Edition of the Fortwo Coupe Electric Drive sometime this year.
The Anniversary Edition will be painted in an exclusive shade of blue which they call the Sapphire Blue Metallic, while the exterior will be getting 10th Anniversary badges to give the car some accents. It will be sitting on a set of 16-inch Brabus Monoblock VII wheels, painted in Matte Anthracite Grey to give it a little contrast. Overall, we think that it has a cool colour combination, with the dark blue body and the wheels that stand out.
Most of the changes for the special edition car can be found on the exterior. Though there are changes in the cabin, they may not be as significant. And the only obvious ones include the Brabus-supplied parts for the shift knob and floor mats. Unlike the regular model, the 10th Anniversary Edition model will be getting the Sport Package as a standard. This means that it will be getting brushed stainless steel pedal covers and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.Read the entire article Smart will launch special-edition Fortwo to celebrate 10th year in the US
Finally, a fully electric car without steering wheels and pedals is here. Thanks to Smart as they revealed their newest concept car a few days before the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. Smart's concept, the Vision EQ ForTwo, focuses more on car sharing as opposed to building a personal vehicle amid the aims of big cities to manage traffic. The concept is a two-seater compact vehicle equipped with an advanced autonomous system.
Daimler's master plan by 2022 is to release 10 production electric vehicles, with the newly established EQ brand. And the Vision EQ ForTwo might be a preview of what we can expect from them. The company also said that their future electric vehicles will range in size from a compact Smart model to a large SUV that carries the Mercedes badge.
This concept actually is a reflection of Daimler’s CASE strategy they mentioned earlier, which stands for “connected, autonomous, shared and electric”. This strategy is set to take place in 2030 and beyond.Read the entire article Smart Vision EQ ForTwo might be the future of car sharing
In previous reports, Nissan came up with a lifesaving solution that will address the pressing issue of distracted driving in the form of Signal Shield Concept: The vehicle's arm rest compartment will be converted into a Faraday cage-like area where you can place your mobile device and when the lid is closed, the system will immediately set up a silent zone that will block all the phone's incoming and outgoing cellular activities, Bluetooth and even Wi-fi connections. It is really a cool safety concept coming from the Japanese automaker, and now Apple will also contribute to that cause and is now planning to release a safety feature geared towards drivers.
Have you ever gotten the urge to check your text messages, Facebook notifications and Instagram while driving? Apple wants you to stop the dangerous habit with a new feature called "Do Not Disturb While Driving." DNDWD feature was revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference and will be launched as part of iOS 11 for the iPad and iPhone this coming fall. The feature will be activated when the cellular phone will notice that the user is in a vehicle, and is not using Apple CarPlay at that time, and will block any incoming notifications.
Furthermore, it can even send automatic text message replies that will indicate that the phone's owner is currently driving. DNDWD utilizes information about Bluetooth connectivity and adjacent Wifi networks to know if the phone is in a moving vehicle, according to Endgadget. The feature will also be immediately allowed to function when the mobile device is situated in a running car, although passengers or the person behind the wheel with no regard for safety can manually override the feature. IOS will provide the feature with no payment required, and it will be available this fall for the iPhone 5s to the newest iPhone.Read the entire article Apple shows 'Do Not Disturb While Driving' mode on the future iOS 11 featured on iPhone and iPad
For those wondering what having a luxury lifestyle entails, it is about revealing extravagance at every chance. No wonder many car enthusiasts are intrigued with the idea of a Smart Fortwo being reimagined as a Maybach.
Done by Peisert Design, one interesting change is that the front fascia has become flashy. Another thing that perks up the interest of many fans is how the design manages to effortlessly blend the large wheels to the micro car shape of the Smart. For those who want specifics, these are the 22-inch wheels inspired by the Maybach S650. Meanwhile, the front lights and the front grille are based mainly from the Maybach 6 Concept.
Interior-wise Peisert Design used some of the features from the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. An excellent example is the full-length glass infotainment system/instrument cluster. Further, fitted to it are two electric motors which drive each wheel. Finally, since it comes from a tradition of luxury, both the sides and the roof utilize carbon fiber panels.Read the entire article Peisert Design shows Smart Fortwo reimagined as Maybach

If you have a penchant for the gasoline version of Smart’s ForTwo small coupe and small convertible, better arrange your finances and get a unit before September 2017. That’s because Smart will soon discontinue sales of its conventionally powered small vehicles in North America, including the United States and Canada, according to reports from Automotive News and German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
This development came after Smart dealers in the US and Canada received a game-changing letter from Mercedes-Benz USA chief executive Dietmar Exler. In the letter, Exler noted that Smart’s current product portfolio is facing some challenges brought by developments within the micro-car segment. He then said that as Smart launches the fourth generation of the Smart ForTwo electric drive in the summer, the brand’s product lineup in the US and Canada will include only zero-emissions Smart electric-drive coupe and cabriolet.
Exler’s statement effectively meant the imminent discontinuation of its conventionally powered products. More specifically, Smart will discontinue the production and sales of gasoline-powered offerings after the 2017 model year – only in the US and Canada. Smart will still offer gasoline-powered small cars in other markets.Read the entire article Smart to stop sales of gasoline-powered models, focus on electric cars in US

The upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show is the venue for the unveiling of the open-top version of the smart fortwo, which will be launched in the United States. The new fortwo cabrio is said to be three cars in one – all transformations done with a touch of a button. At its initial form, the fortwo cabrio is a closed two-seater.

Even when the vehicle is being driven at top speed, it won’t take a long time before occupants could enjoy the sun.Read the entire article 2016 Smart ForTwo Cabrio is now official ahead of Frankfurt Motor Show
The Smart minicar brand believes that China could surpass Germany and Italy as the largest market for its vehicles, according to Smart chief executive Annette Winkler. She remarked to Reuters that at the start, there were doubts that Smart could become successful in China since typically, the country’s premium market is about big cars.
However, in some months of 2014, China proved to be one of the top global markets for Smart as sales of premium compact models starts to pick up. Smart has been in China for five years and posted sales of around 17,500 cars in the country in 2013.
Daniel Lescow, the brand’s chief for China, told Reuters that Smart is expected to post a slight growth this year to record sales, no thanks partly to model changes. However, Lescow expects the volume to grow further after the brand rolls out new Smart two-seater and Smart four-seater in China.Read the entire article China will be the largest market for Smart, CEO says

Daimler officially introduced today the all-new 2015 Smart ForTwo and ForFour models and announced that the new vehicles will arrive in Europe in November. Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of German carmaker Daimler AG, is confident that the all-new Smart ForFour minicar will be successful and will help the brand post its first profit. He remarked that the ForFour is an extended ForTwo, having the attributes of the latter like wider interior relative to length and a rear-mounted engine.
Annette Winkler, chief of the Smart brand, described the ForFour as “the station wagon version of the ForTwo.” Smart rolled out the ForTwo in 1997 and the vehicle was an instant success being as the only two-seat microcar available in the market.
The original ForFour, however, failed to claim similar success. After its launch in 2004, the ForFour was discontinued in June 2006 with just 133,000 units sold. Daimler co-developed the all-new ForFour with Renault.Read the entire article Daimler CEO is confident of success of new Smart ForFour
Consumers in Europe will welcome the arrival of the new Smart ForFour car this year, but those in the United States will not. Smart boss Annette Winkler said during the Detroit auto show that they have yet to decide whether to homologate the ForFour for the US, since the Daimler unit is still unsure whether there is a big enough market in the country for the car to justify the cost of homologation.
According to Winkler, the redesigned ForTwo -- which is wider and roomier than the current model -- may be enough to increase US sales. "There are other regulations to comply with, and to achieve what is needed here costs extra money," she said. Smart posted a 7-percent drop in sales in the US to 9,264 units in 2013.
Steve Cannon, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz USA, remarked that Smart is more of a 10,000 unit niche player than a volume brand. He added that Smart’s fuel economy will help Mercedes-Benz comply with stringent future corporate average fuel economy regulations.Read the entire article New Smart ForFour not expected in the United States this year due to high costs
Smart’s third-generation ForTwo model is now in the final phase of a three-year test and development program. Smart is planning to unveil the third-generation ForTwo in 2014. The latest ForTwo hatchback represents a new chapter for Smart, which recently obtained greater independence from Daimler. Smart chief executive Annette Winkler is aiming to stop years of financial bleeding after almost a decade of rebuilding.
The third-generation ForTwo, known internally as project C453, is being developed in a joint engineering program with the second-generation ForFour and sister car third-generation Renault Twingo. All three models are based on a newly developed rear-engined/rear-wheel-drive platform structure. Its engineering is led by Smart with input from Renault.
The new platform structure, which is conceived to support different wheelbases and track widths, features more high-strength steel than that one employed in the second-generation ForTwo, providing more rigidity and improved safety.Read the entire article Third-gen Smart ForTwo now in final phase of testing, will debut in 2014
