Ian Callum claims that the Jaguar XJ successor will be a special one

It was sometime in early 2017 when we last heard from Jaguar regarding the XJ’s successor at the New York Auto Show. At that time, it was the general manager of North American product management, David Larsen who talked about the up and coming XJ. Ian Callum, who is in charge of Jaguar’s design, told CAR Magazine that the new range topper is “nearly signed off”. And so we are assuming that we will be seeing the XJ in one version or another very soon. With all the developments going on in Jaguar, this is surely exciting news.

Callum gave us a little more idea of what is happening internally, and apparently, there have been a lot of arguments regarding the XJ’s direction – specifically on where the next generation model should go. So the team ended up deciding that the XJ’s successor will be “something quite special”.

However, they did not share further details apart from that. If you were not aware, the outgoing XJ was actually launched in 2009 and it is the oldest model in its class today. With very little detail about the upcoming XJ, Callum also adds that we will not see the model any time soon as it will definitely not come out in 2018.

Jaguar dealers have a reason to be more optimistic this year despite having a bad sales performance in 2012, when new-car sales for the brand dropped 2 percent to 12,011 units. For this year, Jaguar is offering all-wheel-drive and a V-6 on its 2013 XJ model – features that were not present on its product line in 2012.

Jaguar also retooled its TV commercials, increased its online presence and urged its single-point dealers to consolidate to pave way for more stores that combine the Land Rover and Jaguar British luxury franchises. Jaguar also changed the way that dealers could get concerns to the factory. The Jaguar Business Operations Council and the Land Rover Business Operations Council have merged Jan. 1, 2013, to form Jaguar Land Rover Retailer Cabinet.

According to Michael Levitan, the dealer principal of two Jaguar dealerships in New York and chairman of the Cabinet, its role is to represent dealers' concerns and be a “sounding board to the factory.”  He noted that dealer profitability, vehicle quality and raising awareness about Jaguar are top concerns.

Jaguar will be rolling out All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) versions of the XF and XJ saloons in selected markets starting with its 2013 Model Year. Jaguar usually offers All-Wheel-Drive versions where there is high demand for the vehicle, especially in areas where harsh conditions exist. The AWD versions are expected to highlight the capability and versatility of the XF and XJ in conditions where considerable road grip is hard to attain.

Jaguar will be marketing the AWD versions of the XF and XJ in major markets like North America, Russia, China and continental Europe. The AWD versions are powered by Jaguar’s new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged 340PS petrol engine.

Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director for Jaguar, said that the carmaker has revitalised its core range and is now carrying out an intensive programme of introducing new models, strategic powertrain and technologies to bolster the Jaguar brand globally.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Jaguar XJ_e plug-in hybrid, the first hybrid research vehicle developed by the British company now owned by India’s Tata Motors. Just like the Range_e, the Jaguar XJ_e plug-in hybrid is powered by a fuel-efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (borrowed from the Range Rover Evoque) mated to a hybridised 8-speed automatic transmission.

Moreover, we find a 69kW motor/generator and a 12.8kWh Lithium Ion battery pack which can be fully charged using a 240V domestic supply in around four hours.

Using just the battery, the vehicle has a range of 40km (25 miles). The hybrid system delivers a total output of 334PS and has a fuel consumption of just 3.2l/100km (87mpg) translates into a maximum range of 1092 km (679 miles) on a full tank of fuel.

Jaguar’s 2013 model year generation XJ now offers higher efficiency and refinement. The XJ, which is the most technologically advanced car of Jaguar, benefited from the continuing research and practical technological features. This model is also made to be more comfortable. It comes with remarkable improvements in its transmission and engine as well as dynamic developments.

The XJ does need more space for an eight-speed ZF transmission with Intelligent Stop-Start as standard. The XJ uses all-aluminium architecture, improving its efficiency. These elements, when used on the XF, cut fuel consumptions and reduce CO2 emissions. It’s believed that the new XJ is will return 47 MPG while it will have an emissions level of 159g/km of CO2, standing for a 14% improvement. A new 3.0-litre, supercharged V6 powertrain is being introduced on the 2013 XJ.

This new engine has been improved to be more advanced and to offer a higher performance. With this engine on the Jaguar, the results are just awesome. It produces 340PS and 450Nm of torque, equivalent to nearly 127PS per litre, which makes it be the Jaguar engine with the highest specific output ever. With these numbers, the vehicle can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds.

A premium taxi on the race track? Most people may never have even dreamed about it but the men and women at Jaguar just achieved that with the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi. Based on the all-aluminum long wheelbase XJ Supersport fitted with Sport and Speed Pack options, the 'Nürburgring taxi' is the latest member of Jaguar’s fleet at its Nürburgring Nordschleife engineering test center.

It is powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine – something people don’t expect in a taxi – that develops 510PS and pushes the taxi to a top speed of 174mph, sans the fare meter. In terms of styling, the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi comes with the non-standard matt grey paint finish with exterior Sport Pack.

Thanks to the Speed Pack, the vehicle’s electronically limited top speed surged from 155mph to 174mph. Nevertheless, the Jaguar Nürburgring taxi remains spacious enough to seat four people. Jaguar needed to implement some changes within the Nürburgring taxi to make sure that its occupants are utterly secured and safe when the vehicle makes its rounds.

[Update - the 2013 Toyota Avalon was unveiled - read all about it here] - To regain leadership, Toyota has created a plan to release a lineup of new or redesigned products within the next two years. Under the timeframe that Toyota has given, there will be at least 10 products that will appear in dealerships by the end of 2012.

Toyota will undertake a significant change in how it develops its products. Toyota will now lengthen the platform cadence. What Toyota did previously was for the models to be redesigned after every five years and for there to be a slight change in the fascia after the third year. With this new approach, the cycle could be extended to six years but at the midpoint, there will be more significant sheet metal revisions as well as powertrain upgrades.

Toyota revealed that the styling of the global subcompact Yaris will be more aggressive. It will arrive this fall, after having been slightly delayed as its Iwate plant was damaged by the March 11 earthquake. This new version will feature a 98.8-inch wheelbase, making it longer than the existing model by about two inches.

Sales will start this May for Audi’s 2012 A7 Sportback, a premium hatchback that’s slotted between the A6 and the A8. With this new model, Audi is entering a new niche. Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen said that the A7 Sportback is meant to be an “avant-garde alternative” for those who are considering the Jaguar XJ and BMW 7 series.

Right before the start of the New York auto show, de Nysschen was interviewed and he claimed that the A7 Sportback is targeted at those who want a car that’s “more emotionally styled” but will have the driving dynamics and the safety features that are available on the A8 or a 7 series.

He also pointed to the Mercedes-Benz CLS as a rival for this car. Audi is undertaking projects such as the A7 to expand its lineup so that it can raise U.S. sales to 150,000 vehicles in 2015. Audi had its best year ever in the U.S. in 2010 with sales totaling 101,629 vehicles.

Jaguar said that it is developing a new small saloon that slots below the XF. When it arrives in showrooms, the new model will be priced at about £28,000. According to Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar’s Global Brand Director, the sub-£30,000 premium car market is four times bigger than the market for saloons that are priced higher than £30,000.

Sources said that the new car is sized smaller than the current XF saloon but it is still sufficiently large to carry five grownups. It’s uncertain if the car will be built on an aluminum platform. It’s very possible that the XF replacement will be made from aluminum.

It will also be bigger and it is expected to be positioned further upmarket. Jaguar insiders confirmed that the company is developing an all-wheel drive version of the XJ saloon that will be launched in less than 2 years.
