Chrysler stops offering CVTs for 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot

Chrysler Group will no longer offer continuously variable transmissions for its re-engineered 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot compact crossovers, as part of the carmaker’s mid-cycle changes for the two vehicle models. Chrysler will instead install a new six-speed automatic gearbox in the crossovers. The Compass and Patriot have used CVTs since they were introduced in 2006.

According to Jeep engineers, the new six-speed automatic is quieter and enhances acceleration as well as highway fuel economy. Mike Manley, head of the Jeep brand, remarked that they are going to address the final customer points on the vehicles, which focus on the transmission.

The crossover will also sport styling changes in their exterior, but will be limited to new headlights and taillights and more chrome trim. For the interior, the crossovers will be available with new optional leather seats made of the same materials as the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler will drop the Jeep Compass and replace Town & Country with a crossover

Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Fiat and Chrysler, said that in 2014, the Jeep Compass will be discontinued by Chrysler Group. The Chrysler Town & Country minivan will also be replaced with a crossover. These are included in Marchionne’s efforts for each Chrysler Group brand to have an identity that’s more distinct and to prevent overlaps in products similar to what happened during the DaimlerChrysler era.

Chrysler has to work on this since more than 90% of its dealers offer all four volume brands -- Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. The Compass and the Jeep Patriot are similar. Meanwhile, the Town & Country is a lot like the Dodge Grand Caravan minivan.

The Town & Country will be replaced by a smaller Chrysler-brand crossover but the name will be kept. The changes in the Town & Country changes mean that Chrysler (which created the traditional minivan) will only offer one minivan -- the Grand Caravan.

Jeep launches its latest limited-edition Compass Altitude, which continues the customized "from-the-factory" appearance first showcased in the Grand Cherokee concept revealed in January. This Altitude variant is available at a U.S. MSRP starting $23,940 for 4x4 models and $22,190 for 4x2 models. It comes in Black, Deep Cherry Red, Bright White and Mineral Gray.

Compass' trademark seven-slot Jeep grille and headlamps are surrounded by a characteristic black gloss finish. This theme flows into a black step pad and the black roof rails. The Compass Altitude comes on the exclusive 18-inch black gloss aluminum wheels clad in Firestone BSW all-season performance tires. Three drivetrain configurations are available with the Jeep Compass Altitude model including Freedom Drive II Off-Road and Freedom Drive I packages.

The vehicle is equipped with power heated exterior mirrors and heated seats, continuously variable automatic transaxle, remote start and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. It is also equipped with a massive array of security and safety features like electronic stability control, Hill-start Assist with manual transmission, side-curtain air bags for all rows and electronic roll mitigation.

The Jeep Compass is a competent off-road machine just like all the Trail Rated Jeep models. This off-road function and form is even more enhanced with the Mopar Jeep Compass "True North" model. The exterior showcases a matte black finish on the wheel flares, roof, door cladding, lower fascia and black grille with body color inserts. It also features black-headlamp and fog-lamp surrounds, custom front and rear brush bars, rear fog lights and custom rock rails.

Adding some off-road appeal is a 2-inch lift kit from Rocky Road Suspensions and matte black 16-inch alloy wheels with BF Goodrich All Terrain tires. In the interior, the vehicle enjoys lots of attention from Mopar and popular audio component manufacturer Kicker, which provides the complete audio system with rear and front speakers, sub-woofer, amplifier and lift gate speakers.

The audio system converts the Jeep Compass into a mobile high-end sound studio. The vehicle also has a custom center stack gauge pod that houses pitch and roll inclinometer gauges. Adding an enhanced quality feel of the cabin is a Mopar bright pedal kit, rear-cargo tray, door-sill guards, neoprene seats and shift knob.

Chrysler Group LLC said its revamped Jeep Compass SUV will have a very significant role in the automaker's expansion outside of North America. The new Compass will have its auto-show debut in Detroit on Jan. 10, 2011.

Mike Manley, head of Jeep brand and Chrysler's international organization said the SUV, updated to resemble the larger and higher-priced Jeep Grand Cherokee, should appeal to non-U.S. drivers who prefer smaller vehicles.

According to the company website, the Compass starts at $19,295 in the U.S., compared with $30,215 for the Grand Cherokee.

Jeep CEO Mike Manley said that although the replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot will come from a front-wheel-drive Fiat car platform, he wants to make it clear that the replacement will be "100 percent Jeep."

Jeep engineers will develop the vehicle, which is why the product stays in the U.S. In about 18 months, the new Jeep will replace both the Patriot and Compass compact crossovers, which share a platform, engine and optional equipment.

Those vehicles offer both fwd and all-wheel-drive configurations. Jeep is debating whether to choose a new name or keep Patriot or Compass, a source said. Through November 2010, U.S. sales for the Patriot and Compass totaled 49,672, up 26 percent over 2009.

Five weeks are all it took for the 2011 Jeep Compass to go from sketches to its release. Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, said that restyling typically takes about six months but the Compass was done in a record fast period.

He said that it was an “amazingly lightening-fast program” because the company was focused and had adequate resources.

It’s also notable that the restyled crossover is priced $4,000 higher than the 2010 model. The Compass is inspired by the luxury styling cues featured on the Grand Cherokee. The items that were replaced include all of the sheet metal from the A-pillar forward, as well as the grille, headlight treatments, and front and rear fascias.

In order to improve the lightning, the new Compass uses quad reflector headlamps, while the fog lamps are now high output projector lamps. The design of the front end is also continued at the rear, where we can see a new rear fascia, new body-color rear spoiler and subtle, upscale touches including new LED taillamps.

The 2011 Compass Limited models features bright trim on the step pad and a chrome exhaust tip.
