Ever heard of a driver performing a gymkhana while climbing the world-renowned Pikes Peak? Seems unusual and outrageous, but there is a driver daring enough to take on this challenge. Professional rally driver, Ken Block, is more than skilled to pilot an equally outrageous car to perform a “Climbkhana” (climbing + gymkhana) at the Pikes Peak, the high point of the El Paso county in Colorado, United States.
A gymkhana performance is a difficult thing to accomplish, and so is climbing a 14,000-feet mountain. Block managed to accomplish both in his Pikes Peak Climbkhana performance, making it seem that his methanol-fueled highly modified car was dancing as it traveled from the starting point to the finish line at the peak.
To set things straight, Block’s Climbkhana wasn’t a shot at being the fastest to complete the Pikes Peak. That record was set in 2013 by Sebastien Loeb in the driver’s seat of a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak. He completed the 12.42 miles of the climb course in just eight minutes and 13.878 seconds. That wasn’t an easy feat, considering that climbing from 9,390 ft. (2,862 meters) to 14,110 ft. (4,300 meters) -- both above sea level – affects the performance of a typical engine due to atmospheric density or air density. It was back in October last year when Volkswagen began teasing us about the fully electric Pikes Peak racer, and last month, they showed us fully revealing images of the model. Now finally, VW has opened up and is ready to talk about the model’s technical specs.
This zero-emissions race car carries two electric motors, that gives out a combined output of 680 horsepower (500 kilowatts) and a considerable amount of torque at 650 Newton metres (480 pound feet). These numbers are already impressive but wait until we tell you that the vehicle weighs under 1,100 kilograms (2,425 pounds). If you do the math, it’s easy to conclude that that this car can go quite fast.
According to VW, in only 2.25 seconds, the I.D. R Pikes Peak can accelerate to 69 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in as short as 2.25 seconds. Having said that, it even is faster than a Formula 1 and Formula E racers. The Bentley Bentayga is set to participate in the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb that is slated to take place on June 24th in Colorado.
The automaker’s motorsport department is currently working on improving the vehicle’s performance. For it to succeed, the 600 horsepower SUV will have to go through the 12.42-mile (19.98 kilometers) hill climb with a total of 156 corners, as fast as it can. In fact, it will have to be faster than all the other SUVs joining. Vehicles that will participate in Pikes Peak will have to climb 4,720 feet all the way to the finish line at the mountain’s summit of 14,115 feet.

Volkswagen had been reluctant to offer info about its new race car but it seems to have gotten over some of its shyness as it published the first batch of teasers last October 18. The company plans to have this model participate in the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Club. To set things straight first, the fastest vehicle to complete the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course – measuring around 12.42 grueling miles – isn’t an electric car, but a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak piloted by Sebastien Loeb. In 2014, Ken Block unveiled his wild Hoonicorn at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Last Vegas. Derived from the 1965 Ford Mustang notchback pony car, the Hoonicorn was designed by RTR, Ken Block, Hoonigan and RTR. Its styling was inspired by current WRC cars at the time and DTM cars as well as toy cars from Block's younger days.
What is amazing about the Hoonicorn is the fact that it is powered by a 410 cubic-inch Roush Yates Ford V8 that delivers an astonishing 845 hp of max output and 720 lb.ft of torque. This vastly superior engine is mated to a six-speed Sadev SC90-24 all-wheel-drive transmission with a hydraulic handbrake system.

The new Acura EV Concept will be fielded in the Electric Modified Class at the 2016 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, as powered by an evolved version of the all-electric, four-motor Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) powertrain that made a dominating case in the 2015 Pikes Peak Challenge Exhibition class.
Inspired by the NSX supercar, the Acura EV Concept will be piloted by Tetsuya Yamano at the 2016 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Yamano remarked that the team has been working on the Acura EV Concept for several weeks at Pikes, thereby significantly advancing the prototype’s performance. He said it will be an honor to pilot the Acura EV Concept at the 100th year of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Yamano piloted the CR-Z-based electric prototype in 2015.
The Acura EV Concept is regarded as a definitive personification of the all-wheel-drive Electric SH-AWD powertrain that features the first technology in the world that allows for four-wheel independent torque allocation. Ken Block has a new toy, the Ford F-150 RaptorTRAX a.k.a. the ultimate backcountry snowboard expedition vehicle, which I am sure that many of you would like to try it (including us of course). What’s more interesting is that the vehicle you see in the photo is actually the fastest snowcat for backcountry snowboarding and will be the star in the upcoming video that will be released Winter 2014/15.
As expected, the truck is based on the F-150 Raptor pickup truck prepared by Ford Racing and further enhanced by Special Vehicle Concepts in California. As you can see in the photos, the truck features snowboard racks, a roof basket, a rear-mounted winch, interior storage for snacks and drinks, an exterior stereo setup for blasting music on-site and plenty of exterior-mounted Rigid Industries lighting to help guide the way.

Ken Block drove a 2013 Ford Fiesta ST RX43 rally car through an exciting series of obstacles in the sixth edition of the Gymkhana series of videos. Block, a famous professional driver and clothing-brand promoter, teamed up with Need for Speed to create the ultimate Gymkhana grid course, “a real-life playground to showcase the sheer speed, fun, and exhilarating action of driving.”
Need for Speed Rivals got Block as a racing advisor. What they put together really looks like a video game. Block is drifting sideways in perfect figure-eights under a couple of huge backhoe loaders, reminiscent of old Tony Hawk skating games. Block drives the 2013 Ford Fiesta ST RX43 and proves that this 650-hp, 650 lb-ft rally car can go from zero to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds.
Block shows how easily the car can move through Lamborghini Aventador supercars and around Segways. The wrecking ball in Block’s video is covered in spikes, and his rally car quickly goes around it over and over. The most interesting part is the interior shots, showing how calm Block is throughout the entire process. Sebastien Loeb proved why he was a nine-time World Rally Champion in 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb by setting a new race record on the contest dubbed as the "Race to the Clouds." Loeb easily broke the hill-climb race record set in 2012 by Rhys Millen by almost one-and-a-half minute. Loeb zoomed from the starting line of the 12.42-mile snake-like course and reached the finish line in just 8:13.878, much faster than Millen's 9:46.181.
Loeb set the new race record in a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak competing in the Unlimited class, and averaged 87 miles per hour. Coming in second and also breaking his previous record was Millen, clocking 9:02.192 in his 2013 Hyundai PM580T. Jean-Philippe Dayraut also managed to break last year's record in a 2011 Mini Countryman, clocking 9:42.740. Paul Dallenbach also surpassed the 2012 record in his 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, clocking 9:46.001. He also won the Time Attack class.
A number of records were also broken during the 91st running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, thanks to a course that is now entirely paved. Carlin Dunne nearly broke his own overall record for the motorcycles at Pikes Peak, which is at 9:52.819. Dunne topped the Exhibition Powersports class by clocking 10:00.694 on his 2013 Lightning Electric SuperBike. The all-new Range Rover Sport will serve as the official Pace Car for the 91st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, United States. As the pace car, the all-new Range Rover Sport will revisit the 12.4-mile course where it set its own record earlier this month as the fastest hill-climb for a production-standard Sport Utility Vehicle.
The Range Rover Sport also broke the long-standing record for any type of production-standard vehicle up the Pikes Peak’s snake-like course.

Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. will field two MiEV Evolution II pure-electric race cars in the Electric Vehicle Division of the world-famous 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) scheduled on June 30, 2013 near Colorado Springs, Colorado. The racing EVs will be driven by two-time Dakar Rally overall champion Hiroshi Masuoka returns and six-time Pikes Peak overall motorcycle champion Greg Tracy. The Mitsubishi Motors Racing Team tested its MiEV Evolution II racing units at Pikes Peak on June 15 and 16, 2013. The vehicle testing showed that the team's EV racing prototypes are all ready to challenge the Race to the Clouds. The MiEV Evolution II boasts of a distinct four-motor drivetrain -- two in the front and another two in the rear -- based on a modified high-output version of the production Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicle motor.
The MiEV Evolution II also boasts of a tube-frame chassis, Mitsubishi's advanced Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive technology and aerodynamically enhanced carbon-fiber bodywork. It features state-of-the-art high-capacity lithium-ion batteries produced by Lithium Energy Japan (LEJ). The 2012 edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb saw the debut of Mitsubishi Motors in the EV Division. The team's i-MiEV Evolution racing prototype driven by Masuoka managed to secure the second spot in the EV class. We finally got our first teaser image of the Peugeot 208 T16 that Sebastien Loeb will drive at the Pikes Peak hillclimb this year. On June 30, the nine-time WRC champion will take part in the 'Unlimited' class. For this year, the car has a profile that’s similar to the roadgoing 208. It is a very extreme model that makes use of the minimal limits of the Unlimited class.
Michael Trouve, who oversees silhouette design at Peugeot's Styling Centre, said that because of the bodywork modifications, the 208 takes on a look that’s almost the same as that of a beast. Trove said that working with some technical limitations, they created an “extreme” version of the 208. Trove supposedly had this sentiment after considering the 208 T16.
