Melissa McCarthy stars in Kia’s Super Bowl ad for the Niro hybrid crossover [w/videos]

Kia Motors’ campaign for the upcoming Super Bowl LI is turning out to be an epic one while sending the right message across its intended audience. And that is not just because Melissa McCarthy is in this particular spot.

As a comedian, McCarthy has been one of the many celebrities who really know how to make people laugh. Her role as the sweet and caring Molly in the six-season sitcom Mike & Molly was one of the defining moments of her career. In this particular ad for Kia, McCarthy remains as sweet and caring, but for the environment – a character made more obvious by the fact that she drives a 2018 Kia Niro hybrid crossover.

Titled as “Hero’s Journey,” this 60-second commercial ad shows the saga of McCarthy as an eco-warrior. While driving her Kia Niro, McCarthy is repeatedly called to take up an active role in several environment-related protests. The first task involved a cause for protecting endangered whales from scrupulous whalers. McCarthy and her team were able to successfully place orange banners – with “Protect the Whales” sign -- on a whaling ship. As she and her team were making the escape, a large whale suddenly surfaced and smacked McCarthy’s boat, sending her flying back to the whaling ship.

As a utility vehicle with hybrid capability, the new 2017 Kia Niro sure doesn’t come cheap.

At launch, the new 2017 Kia Niro will be available in five versions, including the Launch Edition. The regular versions are the FE, LX, EX and Touring. The Launch Edition of the Kia Niro is slotted between the EX and the Touring models. As the base version, the Niro FE is also the most affordable with a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $22,890. Can a vehicle travel from West Coast of the United States to the East Coast using less than 50 gallons of gas? Well, if that is possible, then it would have a place in the Guinness World Records, even if involves a hybrid unit.

That is what actually happened when a hybrid car made a trip from Los Angeles, California to New York. It was Kia’s newest hybrid offering underpinned by a dedicated eco-car platform and a distinct hybrid system that grabbed a place in the Guinness World Records. And there was nothing stopping the 2017 Kia Niro urban crossover hybrid vehicle to set this new world record for lowest fuel consumption by a hybrid vehicle.

Selected for the attempt is an EX model of the new 2017 Kia Niro. To note, Kia didn’t alter the hybrid vehicle in any way just for the attempt – it is an untouched model that could be actually purchased from dealerships.
