Kia Rio, Picanto get ‘Product Design’ awards in red dot design contest

Kia's B-segment Rio and A-segment Picanto have been named winners in the internationally-acclaimed 'Product Design' category for the 2012 red dot design competition. There were at least 4,500 products entered in the competition by 1,800 manufacturers from 58 countries.  The latest honors bring the red dot awards that Kia has achieved to a total of six.

Among the automaker's previous wins were the Sportage and Optima both in 2011, Venga in 2010, and Soul in 2009. The Optima also took the 'best of the best' recognition in 2011. This is the competition's highest accolade for innovative design, wherein only the best products in each category are qualified as candidates.

Kia Chief Officer Peter Schreyer expressed pride in the red dot awards that the Picanto and the Rio have achieved. He commented that they are a "great tribute" to their entire global design team since all the three Kia design centers were part of the development of both automobiles.

2018 Kia Rio GT Line shows up ahead of Geneva Motor Show

Immediately after the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, automakers are now shifting their focus to the next major event, and that is the 2018 Geneva Motor Show that will be taking place in March. One of the first companies that have teased us with what’s soon to come would be Land Rover, with their fancy new Range Rover SV Coupe. Now, it is Kia’s turn as they are ready to reveal the sporty GT Line specification for its Rio supermini.

To give you a refresher, some models that are members of the GT Line family include the Picanto, Sportage, Optima and Sorento, and this new Rio GT Line is simply a visual pack that will give the B-segment hatchback a sportier exterior appearance. Up front, there will be a set of four-point “ice cube” LED fog lights, as it sits on a set of 17 inch alloy wheels that you can only get in this version. Kia has also added a few glossy black accents all over the model, contrasted with a chrome window trim and twin exhaust tips.

As for the interior, there aren’t a lot of things to discuss because the Rio GT will have the same interior as the standard Rio models. In fact, the only interior upgrade it gets is that it is now covered in a black synthetic leather and cloth upholstery with grey stitching, metallic accents, and carbon fiber look for the dashboard. It also gets a new flat bottomed steering wheel that gets a “GT Line” badge.

Frankfurt Preview: 2018 Kia Picanto X-Line is a Sportage-inspired city car

For the first time, Kia will be unveiling their most powerful Picanto later this month at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, dubbed the Picanto X-Line. This comes with a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine that can give as much as 98 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque (172 Newton metres) spread over a broad 1,500 - 4,000 rpm rev range.

Kia plans to bring this model to dealerships later this year in Europe. In terms of performance, the Picanto X-Line can do 0-62 miles per hour in a little over 10 seconds, with an average of 4.5 liters / 100 kilometers (62.7 mpg UK or 52.2 in the US) in the New European Driving Cycle.

Despite the performance upgrade, Kia did not consider giving the Picanto that much of a physical makeover to suit the more powerful engine. The X-Line is like a mini version of the Kia Sportage, and is actually a city car that’s inspired by the SUV. As for the suspension, it has been raised by 15 millimeters (0.6 inches). It also comes with rugged bumpers that boast metal-style skid plates, as well as new black wheel arch cladding and lime green details for the grille and fog lights. If you are not a huge fan of green, then you can always opt for silver details.

Kia teases its next-generation 2017 Picanto with rendered images

When a car has been in the market for nearly six years, it loses some of its luster and its customers tend to go for the all-new model with a whole new level of features offerings instead. Good thing the South Korean carmaker isn’t ignorant of the fact that the second generation of its Kia Picanto small car is nearing the end of its life cycle.

This is why for the model year 2017, Kia will be releasing the new and third generation of the Kia Picanto small car. The Picanto has been repeatedly spied, although it was in its camouflage form in a bid to conceal its new looks. As planned, the South Korean carmaker will unveil the all-new 2017 Kia Picanto in the early part of next year. But before that, Kia has released a set of images providing a better view of the 2017 Picanto small car.

According to Kia, the new Picanto is a fusion of a youthful and energetic new exterior as well as interior design. Moreover, the new Kia Picanto offers customers the chance to personalize their rides when it comes to both the exterior and the interior. Kia added that the new Picanto now boasts of a more assertive stance thanks to its bolder body lines and a wide array of exterior colors to choose from.

Nearly two weeks after teasing us with two rendered illustrations of the next generation of the Kia Picanto small car, the South Korean carmaker has released official images of the new vehicle.

The teaser images released in December provided us some good ideas on how the next gen PIcanto would look like. Those images worked as they should be, teasing us and telling us the third generation of the Picanto looks more aggressive and sportier than the current generation small car from Kia.

Now, Kia has released more images with clearer renditions of the upcoming third-gen Picanto. Unlike the initial teaser images, these new ones present both the exterior and interior appearances of the new Picanto. If there are any differences between the first images and the new ones, it is that the third-gen white Kia Picanto – in GT-Line specs -- on the recent renditions doesn’t look as mean and as aggressive as the black version on the initial renders. Well, this could be because of the differences in the color of the small cars, the angling of the renders and the background used. Nevertheless, the third-gen Picanto has a more aggressive stance and bolder lines than the current generation.

Back at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in September, Kia Motors of South Korea provided us with a preview of the latest version of its B-segment fighter, the new 2017 Kia Rio. Marking the first of the next generation Rio, the model previewed in Paris has been designed and engineered to cater to the demands and wants of a broader group of customers, with global sales set to commence in the first quarter of 2017.

However, what we saw in Paris is the five-door hatchback version of the Kia Rio. The South Korean carmaker has yet to unveil the sedan form of the Kia Rio, which will be due for the 2018 model year. While we are frustrated that we couldn’t see – for now – how the new Kia Rio sedan would look, perhaps the new Kia K2 sedan unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China will tide us over.

But don’t get us wrong. The Kia K2 sedan unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show is intended for the auto market in China. However, the K2 sedan we just saw in China could provide a good preview of the design of the sedan version of the Kia Rio that would be marketed in the United States and Europe. The K2 and the 2017 Rio share several characteristics. For instance, the hood and the headlights of both models are very similar. Moreover, both models feature the general tiger nose grille design of the front end, although that of the Rio hatchback is bigger. Moreover, the rear end of the K2 features the new quarter-flanking taillights found on the Rio hatchback. Overall, the rear end of the K2 looks very similar to that of the 2017 Cadenza, primarily because of the duckbill spoiler and sleeker trunk design. This could mean that the design of these parts could be also be seen on the 2018 Rio sedan.

South Korean carmaker Kia Motors has unveiled the fourth-generation Kia Rio at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The latest generation of the Rio is calling out to B-segment customers to carefully consider this newly designed great ride that boasts of first-in-class safety technology and new connectivity features as well as high levels of practicality and convenience.

The B-segment is currently the biggest segment in the new car market in Europe, and Kia expects to sell over 100,000 units of the newest iteration of the Rio on its first full year. Such a sales figure will place the Rio alongside the carmaker’s other hit models in the continent like the Sportage and cee’d.

In 2015, the Rio ranked as the brand’s best-selling model in the world selling over 473,000 units or 16 percent of its annual sales. Kia sold 12,115 Rios in the United Kingdom in the same year, which account for around 15 percent of overall sales in the country.

On October 2, 2014 at the Paris Motor Show, Kia will be unveiling to the global public an enhanced version of the Kia Rio, which now comes loaded with an array of improvements that should help it remain competitive around the world.

Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer at Kia Motors Europe, noted that the Rio was the brand’s best-selling nameplate around the world in 2013, with total sales pegged at 471,000 units. He added that the new Rio is one of Kia’s top 3 units in Europe with 56,821 units sold. He remarked that Kia considers the improvements made to the new Rio as significant.

Cole quipped that the massive popularity of the nameplate is proof that Kia’s designers and engineers managed to get most things 'right' when creating the fourth generation of the Rio in 2011. He added that for 2014, the Rio is building on the core attributes that made it popular with customers, while adding a number of enhancements to give the B-segment challenger a fresher appearance inside and outside.

In response to customers’ demands, Kia has made the decision to build 2013 Rio SX hatchback models with a limited production run. Best of all, it features six-speed manual transmissions for the first time ever. Previously, Kia has only had a manual transmission available in its base LX model. However, it is now thinking about offering other high-spec models that have manual transmission options.

2013 Kia Rio SX manual hatchback offers the following as standard equipment: push-button start, touchscreen navigation, rear-backup camera, a set of 17-inch wheels, sport suspension, LED daytime running lights, satellite radio, and black cloth interior.

The LX model is very basic and is equipped with smaller 16-inch wheels, four-speaker stereo and doesn’t have items like cruise control, power windows and door locks, and a telescopic steering wheel.

Consumer Reports' list of recommended small cars was topped by Kia Motors Corp.'s next-generation Rio. It was able to beat rivals that are more popular in the U.S. such as Ford Motor Co.'s Fiesta. What the very influential consumer magazine liked about the Rio was its "nimble" handling, smooth transmission, simple climate and radio controls.

It also praised Rio for its more cohesive interior compared to a previous version that had visible screws. Meanwhile, Nissan Motor Co.’s Versa sedan had low scores and was criticized for its overhaul as it made the ride jittery and the sounds coming from its engine were “overwhelming and offensive.” In a statement released last Thursday by Consumer Reports, it stated that the revisions on the Versa made it take a dive to the bottom.

More consumers in the U.S. have turned to small cars as gas prices have been rising since 2008. Because of this interest, automakers have given their vehicles a makeover and made them offer more comfort and be more stylish.

Kia’s Rio 3-door offers the same range of ultra-efficient engines, trim levels and external dimensions from the five-door, which went on sale in September 2011. From the side, Kia’s B-segment hatchback has a stunning coupé-like side profile. It is priced £600 lower than the equivalent five-door models. Four engines are available for the Rio 3-door, consisting of two petrol and two diesel engines – identical to what’s offered on the five door version.

The very efficient and the heavily praised 1.1 CRDi offers a dynamic performance from its output of 74bhp and 170Nm of torque available from 1,500rpm.

All the versions offer CO2 emissions of 99g/km or below and have a fuel economy rating of at least 74.3mpg. Kia has postponed the introduction of the 2012 Kia Rio or Soul with stop/start to the second quarter. When interviewed by WardsAuto, Michael Sprague, vice president-marketing for Kia Motors America, said that this fuel-sipping technology is new and the company just wants to guarantee that consumers get the experience they expect.

Kia engineers had to modify the technology due to comments from media members who have driven the stop/start-equipped Rios and Souls.

Kia’s executives refer to this technology as ISG (Idle, Stop and Go). The reviewers’ complaints include a perceptible shock, frequently observed in many vehicles with stop/start systems. This is when the engine automatically shuts down at idle and then restarts. Sprague said that the sales delay gives Kia the chance to give its dealers more training so that they could explain the technology better to customers.

Right after Kia’s first wins at the GRAND-AM Team and Driver road races in the Street Tuner class of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, it has released the new 2012 Rio 5-door subcompact – its entry into showroom stock (B-Spec) racing. This move is the first expansion plan implemented under Kia’s U.S. motorsports program.

This racecar will rival Honda Fit, Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta, among others, in a series of events organized by various motorsports sanctioning bodies such as GRAND-AM, World Challenge, National Auto Sport Association (NASA) and Sports Car Club of America (SCCA).

For a vehicle enthusiast, the B-Spec racing is a relatively cheap way to get into competitive motorsports with an automobile such as the latest 2012 Rio 5-door that provides a new six-speed manual transmission, excellent driving dynamics, and class-leading fuel economy and horsepower. Once potential racers purchase their 2012 Rio 5-door LX, a B-Spec kit costing around $14,000 is available for purchase from Kinetic Motorsports, the racing partner of Kia.

Its bold exterior design is accentuated by 17-inch three-piece gold wheels, a custom body kit with a front splitter made of wood to match the surfboard, a gorgeous sunset-metallic golden-brown paint scheme, and a refurbished rear fascia with center-mount dual exhaust.
