Third-generation Kia ProCeed evolves from a three-door coupe to a shooting brake model

Kia is introducing third generation of the Kia ProCeed. While the next-gen model retained its nameplate, it has changed from a three-door coupe to a shooting brake. To be available in the market in the first quarter of 2019, the new Kia ProCeed offers imposing proportions, a compact footprint and good level of versatility.

The decision to transform the ProCeed from a three-door coupe into a shooting brake was fairly easy for Kia. As explained by Gregory Guillaume, Kia’s European Head of Design, the market for three-door hatchbacks in Europe has been shrinking.

However, Kia was adamant to kill the nameplate just because of low demand. Instead, they created a shooting brake body for the ProCeed, making it more versatile while having no direct rival. While Mercedes-Benz has the CLA Shooting Brake, this offering belongs to the premium segment, while the Kia ProCeed is for the volume market.

Kia gets rid of Pro Cee’d 3-door hatchback but shooting brake and SUV variants will launch next year

In a bid to get its share of spotlight in the ever-expanding SUV arena, Kia is finally sending its Pro Cee’d out the door by welcoming four new SUV models on stage. These four new SUV variants will be focused towards its European market, including a performance oriented shooting brake that is likely to be launched early next year.

While the Pro Cee’d has been discontinued, Kia is replacing the three-door hatch with exciting new models comprising of a crossover-type SUV, a sport –style wagon, a shooting brake and a long roof variant. The timing is perfect now that the Korean car maker is pushing its products more globally especially in Europe. In the previous year, Kia has sold over 89,000 vehicles in the UK where most of the sales are accounted for its SUVs --- earning the brand a larger market share versus Mini, Mazda, Land Rover, Fiat and Citroen.

With design references coming mostly from the brand’s current SUVs as well as from its popular Euro-spec Cee’d hatchback, Kia’s upcoming compact SUV line will be positioned just below its existing Stonic and Sportage models but otherwise on the same level as the Seat Ateca and Nissan Qashqai SUVs in the highly competitive ground.

Kia Proceed Concept arrives before 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show

Kia has already revealed some details about their new concept, the Proceed. And now, we are getting our first look at it. The first two generations of the Kia Proceed we have seen are both three-door coupes, and now it seems like the company is planning to significantly change the model for the third generation. The new Proceed concept will now have the look of a sporty wagon with five doors, similar to a shooting brake. In fact, it now looks more like a Stinger sedan more than anything else, and that is a good thing.

The model was designed in Europe, and the “extended hot hatch” will be sitting on a set of large 20-inch wheels that look more like a work of art, thanks to its intricate design. The new Proceed has a more rakish roofline that overall gives it a very nice silhouette, but still kind of reminds you of its coupe predecessors. By looking at the images, the IAA-bound concept is dressed in a striking Lava Red paint, equipped with the sporty GT specifications. This comes with large air vents at its Stinger-like front fascia, and with large fenders and carbon fiber details, though we do think some of these design elements will not make it to production stage.

What’s cool about this concept is the fact that the greenhouse’s outline automatically lights up, while the door handles pop out when the drive approaches the car.

As such, both have that sporty and powerful style. They also have the dual-exhaust pipes, daytime running lights which use LED, attractive brake calipers in red, and the alloy 18-inch wheels. In addition, the cee’d GT will be powered by the GDI 1.6-liter turbocharged engine capable of 204 ps with peak torque of 265 Nm. This is the same engine fitted to the pro_cee’d GT.
