Kia unveils 2017 Soul Turbo at 2016 LA Auto Show

South Korean carmaker Kia Motors has chosen the upcoming 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show at the venue for the unveiling of a turbocharged version of its new Kia Soul compact crossover to the North American market. For the 2017 model year, Kia’s Soul range has been made more appealing with the addition of the 2017 Soul Exclaim, a compact crossover with a sporty and dynamic feel. With this, the 2017 Kia is now offered in three versions – base, Plus and Exclaim.

The Soul is one of the reasons why Kia made a sudden surge in the United States, especially in the crossover segment. With a design distinct from fellow compact crossovers, the Kia Soul also managed to attract more customers to Kia by offering a satisfying fuel economy and comfortable ride in a package that is available in a very reasonable price.

Power had been provided for by 1.6- and 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engines, but was not enough to provide a higher level of thrill and excitement. The 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine found in the base Soul delivers only 130 hp of output while the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated powerplant in the Soul Plus offers a higher 161 hp. The Exclaim package for the refreshed 2017 Kia Soul is the answer that the carmaker has found to further the SUV’s appeal to customers in North America.

2017 Kia Soul gets 1.6 turbo engine and design upgrades straight from Europe

The 2016 Paris Motor Show has been hosting various automotive surprises for more than a century. Held every October, the Paris Motor Show has become a popular venue for car manufacturers to showcase to their newest concept cars and brand new or updated models. This year’s show is not an exception as some companies have dropped a few hints of what is in store for their most loyal customers. One of them is none other than South Korean automaker, Kia.

This year, Kia will be presenting the 2017 Kia Soul – a quicker and trendier version of its five-door compact crossover. What makes this year’s Soul extra special is the fact that it went all the way to Europe to get its upgrades. Yes, you read that right. The Soul apparently got itself a facelift and some styling upgrades, new technology, and the highlight of them all, a new engine and transmission combination.

Rumours of the Soul’s upgraded turbo power have circulated for a while and this time, it has finally been confirmed. The new Soul will now have a 1.6-liter T-GDI four-cylinder engine courtesy of Cee’d GT and Pro_Cee’d GT, and is capable of giving 201 horsepower on the front wheels via its new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This year’s model is now considered as the most powerful Soul that was ever made by the South Korean automaker. It is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 122 mph. It also comes with larger brakes for more stopping power and will come in three driving modes: Normal, Eco, and Sport.

Kia Soul will receive a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine and possibly an AWD system

Kia Soul is one of company’s bestsellers and in order to keep its crown it will receive additional powertrain options. According to a Kia product planner who spoke with Automobilemag, the Soul will receive a 1.6-liter turbocharge four-cylinder engine found also on the Forte SX Turbo and the Hyundai Veloster Turbo.

On the mentioned models, the engine delivers 201 hp at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb-ft from 1,750 – 4,500 rpm. What’s more interesting is that Kia is also planning to add an all-wheel-drive version of the Soul as they receive plenty of requests for such a version from dealers.

Currently, the Kia Soul is only available with 1.6- and 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines that deliver 130 hp and 164 hp, respectively.

Kia got itself a holy endorsement after Pope Francis chose to have himself ferried by a Kia Soul during his five-day visit in the carmaker’s home turf, South Korea. According to organizers of the pope’s visit in the country, the head of the Catholic church was scheduled to preside over a beatification ceremony for Korean martyrs on Aug. 16, an event expected to be attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

The pontiff's choice underscores his preference for small cars. His predecessors had chosen to ride more comfortable Popemobiles, like the bulletproof Mercedes-Benz that carried Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict XVI also rode in a bomb-proof Mercedes-Benz.

He also rode an Audi A8 during his visit to Germany. He received an electric vehicle from Renault in 2012, with chief executive Carlos Ghosn making a personal delivery. Kim Jin Kook, CEO of auto researcher Marketing Insight, told Bloomberg by phone that Pope Francis choosing Kia Soul will help the carmaker by bringing far-reaching exposure through the mass media.

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the 2014 Kia Soul with a 5-Star overall safety rating. Thanks to the vehicle’s extensive list of standard safety features as well as use of high-tensile steel, Soul received 5 stars in the frontal and side impact tests and four stars in the roll-over test.

Around 66 percent of the 2014 Kia Soul’s chassis utilizes either Ultra High Strength Steel (35 percent) or High Strength Steel (31 percent). The latest model also provides vehicle protection thanks to its standard safety features and technology like six standard airbags -- dual advanced front and front seat-mounted side air bags, full-length side curtain air bags -- and a four-channel, four-sensor Antilock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). The ABS with EBD considers vehicle load and weight distribution and then applies the right stopping force to improve control and stability.

Other standard safety equipment for the 2014 Soul includes Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a Traction Control System (TCS). The TCS employs brake and engine torque intervention to improve traction during launch and acceleration even on slippery road surfaces.

Kia posted an 11-percent gain in vehicle sales in the United States in November 2013, boosted by a 77-percent surge in sales of the 2013 Kia Soul. That boost could be the result of a last-minute one-day incentive program offered by Kia to its dealers. On Dec. 2, the last day of the November sales reporting period, Kia sent a memo to its dealers offering $1,800 in bonus dealer cash for each 2013 Kia Soul sold that day.

According to dealers, the incentive program would be the last one offered on the 2013 Soul, with subsequent sales no longer counted toward monthly stair-step incentive programs. What is more interesting is that the timing of the memo means that dealers had only a few hours to report the cars as sold to qualify for the $1,800 bonuses.

To avail of the program, some dealers told Automotive News that the short window given to them left them no choice but to report the 2013 Kia Souls as sold on Dec. 2, and then try to sell them to actual customers later.

The 2014 Kia Soul compact SUV made its debut in Europe at the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt. The 2014 Soul, which took inspiration from the 2012 Kia Track’ster concept, is expected to go on sale in early 2014 throughout Europe. The 2014 Soul comes with a very fresh, more grown-up look, making it instantly identifiable as a Soul.

The IAA marks the first time for the all-new vehicle with European specs to be on display. It shares several features of the outgoing model, which includes its upright stance, squared shoulders, wraparound greenhouse, high-mounted tail lights and impressive SUV ride height. Its interior is all new, with materials that are of better quality and design that’s more focused on the driver. The 2014 Soul will be available with three different roof colors (black, white and red).

Customers can also choose from any of 11 exterior paint finishes.  Kia’s stand at the Frankfurt show features two new Souls that have been fitted with a new SUV Styling Pack, which includes piano black bumper garnish, side skirts, wheel arches and black painted roof.  Kia’s new lineup of accessory kits for the Soul is meant to give owners the chance to take advantage of the vehicle’s versatility. The most significant technical upgrade for the new 2014 Soul is its use of an all-new platform, based on what the newest Kia cee’d is built on. As a result, it offers better ride and handling than the previous model. Its on-road behaviour is also more mature and refined.

Kia announced the pricing for the 2014 Soul today and there is good news: the new car starts at $14,700 MSRP, not including destination charges of $795. The all-new 2014 Kia Soul will be available in three trim levels: Base, Plus and Exclaim. As we said, the 2014 Kia Soul starts at $14,700 MSRP in the Base trim level.

Despite it is the entry-level trim, the 2014 Soul Base offers plenty of features such as privacy glass, Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), optional 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control with steering-wheel-mounted controls, center console armrest and storage, rear center armrest with cup holders and remote keyless entry. Under the hood, we find a 1.6-liter I-4 DOHC gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine with 130 hp and 118 pound-feet of torque.

Moreover, the Soul Base offers rack-ready roof with integrated mounting points, air conditioning, power door locks, power windows with driver-side one-touch auto-down, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, USB/auxiliary input jacks, Bluetooth wireless technology3 and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM). The 2014 Kia Soul Plus starts at $18,200 excluding the $795 destination and handling fee, title, taxes, license, options and dealer charges. It also adds a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 164 hp Upgrades from the Base trim include: 17-inch alloy wheels, gloss black with chrome bezel front upper grille and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators.

The second generation of the funky urban passenger vehicle has been designed to be more functional and more refined. It now has more space as well as more available premium features.

Not only that, the MY2014 Kia Soul offers better driving dynamics. Topping all that are the vehicle’s fresh looks. But the Soul is not only one that has transformed. Not to be outdone, the clothed hamsters are now slimmer and don back-slicked hairs. The European version of the 2014 Kia Soul has just made its debut ahead of the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show that will open its doors in September. Shown in European specification for the first time, the 2014 Kia Soul comes with a new design as well as an all-new interior with higher quality materials and more driver-focused design.

Set to go on sale in early 2014, the Kia Soul will be available with three different roof colors - black, white and red – and 11 exterior paint finishes. Still, the biggest change for 2014MY will be the adoption of a new platform, based on that used by the latest Kia cee’d. As a result, the 2014 Kia Soul will deliver improved handling and ride compared with the outgoing model. A new suspension was also installed and the body shell is 29 percent stiffer. Due to comprehensive soundproofing, the interior noise levels were reduced by approximately three decibels.

The new model is also larger as it feature a longer wheelbase and wider track, contributing to greater cabin space and cargo capacity. Leg, head and shoulder room are increased for all passengers, while Kia increased the cargo area by 4 percent to 354 litres (plus additional underfloor storage) with the rear seats upright. Under the hood, we find the 1.3-liter GDi petrol or the CRDi diesel engines, mated to a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

The work of Kia’s design team on the second-generation Kia Soul is expected to be under scrutiny at the New York Auto Show. The 2014 Kia Soul will likely be compared with its widely popular older sibling, the first-generation Soul. The Soul, which is the first production vehicle under chief stylist Peter Schreyer, boosted the brand’s styling prestige when the model was launched in 2009.

The Soul, a boxy subcompact having a wide stance, introduced Kia’s "tiger nose" grille, which made its appearance on every new Kia model since.

Kia only expected to sell around 40,000 Souls every year, but managed to sell over 100,000 units in 2011 and 2012. Sales of similarly designed boxy subcompact like the Scion xB and Nissan Cube paled in comparison to the Soul, with figures of under 20,000 units last year.

The all-new 2014 Kia Soul was unveiled today at the New York Auto Show! Inspired by the hot Track’ster Concept unveiled last year at the Chicago Auto Show, the 2014 Soul rides on a new chassis that is stiffer, longer and wider. Overall width that’s broadened to 1,800mm (increased by 15mm) and the same overall height of 1,610mm.

The 2014 Soul offers premium touches such as high-mounted LED front positioning lights and rear LED halo lights. External Track’ster similarities are easy to spot, as the 2014 Soul features a larger trapezoidal lower air intake, a reworked version of Kia’s signature grille and a unique “floating” body colour panel inset into the boot. Subtle enhancements include a wider (by 61mm over the previous Soul) opening for the boot, allowing Soul to carry more.

While final colour names have yet to be determined, the 2014 Soul will be available in seven new exterior hues, including the two seen on stage in New York: Solar Yellow and Inferno Red. European specification choices will be announced later.

The Kia Soul ‘Shaker’ makes a comeback to the Soul Originals range at the top of the newly modified Soul range with a starting price of £15,295 on-the road. The other models in the original lineup include Soul ‘Quantum’ and Soul ‘Inferno’. The Soul ‘Shaker’ is positioned in the Soul line-up higher than the ‘2’ specification version and has the same advanced features as the other models in the Soul Originals range.

Some of these are iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control (only for diesel version) and air conditioning. In addition, LED daytime running lights, LED rear combination lamps and high mounted brake lights are included in this list too. The interior features steering wheel mounted controls while both the steering wheel and gearshift have leather trimming.

The ‘Shaker’ is sure to stand out with a Vanilla Shake coloured bodywork but for no additional cost, it is also offered in Quartz Black metallic. The ‘Shaker’ gets a more purposeful stance from its stunning multi-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels.

Kia will add an electric version of the next-generation Soul to its lineup from mid-2014. Kia’s European Marketing President, Benny Oeyen, gave confirmation that Kia’s all new Soul will arrive in Europe as an electric car. He spoke at the launch of the facelifted Kia Sorento in Barcelona. In addition, Oeyen confirmed that the Soul will be an entirely new car, not just a facelift, when it is launched in 2013.

The next Soul will be subjected to subtle styling revisions to cope with the demand from the US market where a larger number of younger people buy the Soul.

The traditionally-powered Soul will be launched at either this February at the Chicago show or it could be slightly delayed due to better television coverage of the New York Motor Show in March.

Kia may offer a new version of the Soul hatchback next year, an executive said during a recent investor’s meeting in Seoul. Reuters reported that this new Soul may have its launch in 2013. A U.S.-based Kia spokesman said that he can’t confirm or deny whether there will be a new Soul coming out. The current model is aging as it had been released four years ago.

A new Soul may use the so-called “tiger” front grille that appeared on new Kia models such as the Rio and Optima. Kia is currently developing a new version of the Forte sedan and a new Rondo carrier. The automaker will also be launching the Quoris flagship sedan.

The 2008 Los Angeles auto show was where the current Kia Soul was unveiled. It started selling in spring 2009. Its box-on-wheels form became inexplicably popular especially at a time when Kia was still establishing its reputation in the U.S. In the first year that it was selling, 31,621 Souls were sold in the U.S. In 2010, its sales increased to 67,100. It increased to 102,267 units last year.

Here comes the Red Rock Special Edition Soul, Kia Motors America’s seventh version of its Soul special edition cars. The Red Rock SE is inspired by the beautiful rock formations in the Southwest United States. After unveiling the Red Rock SE concept in the 2011 New York auto show, Kia toured the concept across the US to gauge consumer reaction.

The tour was a success, eliciting positive reactions. Kia then proceeded to send the concept to production and is now offering the Red Rock SE Soul at Kia dealerships. The production model is fitted with a number of features distinct from the previous Soul special editions.

The Red Rock Special Edition Soul has lustrous Canyon exterior finish highlighted by a high-gloss black front fascia and mirror housings. Inside the Red Rock Special Edition Soul, a customer can experience exclusive black leather trim and brown cloth seats. Standard features include automatic climate control and heated front.

Kia has postponed the introduction of the 2012 Kia Rio or Soul with stop/start to the second quarter. When interviewed by WardsAuto, Michael Sprague, vice president-marketing for Kia Motors America, said that this fuel-sipping technology is new and the company just wants to guarantee that consumers get the experience they expect.

Kia engineers had to modify the technology due to comments from media members who have driven the stop/start-equipped Rios and Souls.

Kia’s executives refer to this technology as ISG (Idle, Stop and Go). The reviewers’ complaints include a perceptible shock, frequently observed in many vehicles with stop/start systems. This is when the engine automatically shuts down at idle and then restarts. Sprague said that the sales delay gives Kia the chance to give its dealers more training so that they could explain the technology better to customers.

Michelle Wie is the perfect inspiration for Kia’s refreshed 2012 Soul. She has been the brand’s official golf ambassador and spokesperson since early last year. However, Wie is also known as an artist and her original artwork is even featured on the custom-embroidered Nike golf bags she uses for tournaments. WCC made sure that the Hole-In-One Soul is an attention-getter.

It features the drawings and characters used on Wie's golf bags on a "So Blue" and white House of Kolor custom paint scheme. The show car has been equipped with hand-painted 20-inch Niche five-spoke wheels. Wie's artwork and personal logo are embroidered into the Roadwire "Snow White" leather seats.

Kia Motors America has recently posted a 60-second ad on YouTube for the freshened 2012 Kia Soul. This new ad campaign brings back Kia’s hamsters that are now dancing to a tune from electro-pop dance music group LMFAO. It’s quite a surprise, considering that the ad starts with a post-apocalyptic battle scene between robotic aliens and space-age soldiers.

In recent years, Kia’s hip-hop hamsters have been very effective and were applauded by both consumers and the industry.

This new campaign seeks to benefit from the good will generated by 2012 Soul's campaign, named "Share Some Soul", says Autonews. The new commercial is expected to debut at the MTV Video Music Awards. In a statement, Kia said that this campaign arrives at movie theaters on Sept. 2 while the 30-second versions will start to be seen on cable and network TV on Sept. 5.
