Kia releases more details on 2016 Sportage

Kia Motors’ all-new Sportage is set to make its global debut on September 15 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. About a week ago, the automaker had released a first look at its exterior and its stunning new design. The fourth-generation Sportage has a prominent, progressive design.

It gives off a sense of agility and power from all angles. The Sportage portrays the contrasting smooth and sharp shapes seen in an assortment of modern fighter jets. Somehow, the designers were able to bring the sharp and defined lines together with the smooth surfaces and create something visually harmonious.

Its ”face” is where the most significant change was made in its design. The new model’s headlamps are not anymore integrated with the grille. Rather, they’re now sweeping back along the exterior edges of the more sharply-featured bonnet and bolder wheel arches. The Sportage is still instantly recognizable as a Kia.

Kia unveils Wonder Woman-inspired Sportage in New York

Kia Motors America has partnered with both Super Street magazine and DC Entertainment to come up with a Sportage inspired by what Wonder Woman represents: inspiration, power, and a sense of equality. This customized Sportage was originally unveiled during the New York International Auto Show in 2013.

This is also the first in an eight-vehicle and 10-month partnership that will be composed of the iconic heroes of the Justice League: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Cyborg. Since there are seven heroes, the eighth version will be the whole team.

The Justice League-inspired Sportages are greatly influenced by visionary Jim Lee. Kia hopes to become a force for good in order to increase awareness of DC’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign. This relief effort by DC Entertainment aims to assist the people in the Horn of Africa who are experiencing a hunger crisis.

Kia Sportage compact CUV and Kia Optima sedan were awarded by Germany’s red dot product design competition this year. They earned top honors in their respective categories. A special award – the highest distinction of this competition-- was given to the new mid-size Kia Optima sedan. It was named 2011’s red dot ‘best of the best’ title. As hinted in its name, only the top products in all the categories are considered.

With this latest batch of winners, Kia now has four models that have received the red dot award. The Kia Venga won in 2010 while the Kia Soul triumphed in 2009. Kia appears to be on a lucky streak as the Kia Optima and the new Sportage received 2011 iF product design awards last December.

Peter Schreyer, Chief Design Officer, Kia Motors Corporation, said that he is “extremely proud” of the red dot awards received by the new Kia Optima and Sportage, adding that these recognize the “hard work” of its design teams around the world as well as a validation of its design strategy.

Kia's new generation Sportage SUV is unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The SUV boasts new dimensions and a design cue inspired by the 2007 Kia Kue concept. Aside from a refreshed engine range, the new Sportage also features more European-like lines, which was designed under the guidance of former Audi designer Peter Schreyer.

The car's lines are certainly sleeker. It's likely that the increased size will heighten the appeal for American consumers. The new SUV is built on the same platform as the Hyundai ix35, thus being bigger than the previous generation.

Engines that are being offered range from a 2.0l to 2.4l four cylinder units, all mated to a six-speed transmission. Kia has yet to provide complete details of this new Sportage but it appears that for the European market, the Sportage will get the same 1.7l and 2.0l diesel, as well as the 1.6l and 2.0l gasoline units as the iX35.
