Ford Makes Legal Move Against Zero to 60 Design's Mustang GTT

California-based company Zero to 60 Designs showed off a rather flattering tribute to the new Ford GT, but it looks like Ford’s lawyers are not taking it easy on this one.

A cease-and-desist order was sent to Zero to 60 Design for creating the Mustang GTT. The Mustang GTT looks very convincing that one would think Ford actually made it which is why the American automaker’s lawyers were quick to act.

Showcased at the 2016 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the Mustang GTT was custom fabricated in Zero to 60 Design’s facility in Corona, California, sporting a new bodywork. In just six weeks, Zero to 60 Designs was able to complete the transformation of a relatively brand-new Mustang GT coupe into this amazing creation; relatively new because it was driven for 300 miles (482 kilometers) before this transformation.

Ford faces Versata’s intellectual property lawsuit over ACM software

A federal lawsuit was filed on May 7 against Ford Motor Co by Versata, a Texas software company, for having stolen its intellectual property. Versata claims that Ford benefited from its software by considerably cutting warranty costs and by bringing its vehicles to the market quicker.

Last Wednesday, Versata requested a U.S. District Court judge in Texas for an injunction against Ford, which started using the software in 1998 as part of its product-development process. The lawsuit said that at the end of 2014, Ford terminated the $8.45 million-a-year contract.

It then started using a program that was developed in-house based on Versata’s proprietary software, according to the lawsuit. Versata, which cited unspecified damages, said that Ford had gotten a software patent in 2014 based on the technology that it had licensed to Ford.

Ford settles class action suit over defective Super Duty engines

Ford Motor Co. has reached an agreement to settle a class-action lawsuit over allegations that it sold defective diesel 6-liter V-8 engines in its 2003-07 Super Duty pickups and E-series vans. The engine, built by Ford's former diesel engine supplier, Navistar International, encountered several issues with the fuel system, turbochargers and other major components.

According to the deal, any purchaser and lessee of any 2003-07 Ford vehicle fitted with the diesel engine in the United States is covered if its exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler and EGR valve, oil cooler, fuel injectors, or turbocharger was repaired, replaced or adjusted prior to 135,000 miles or six years. Each part is also provided with a reimbursement limit.

The settlement also calls for a reimbursement if a class member paid a $100 deductible more than once for repairs under the five-year/100,000-mile engine warranty. The carmaker will reimburse $50 each for the second through fifth deductible paid, up to a limit of $200 for four deductible payments.

Class suit vs Ford infotainment systems filed in California

The Center for Defensive Driving filed a proposed class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co., claiming that the MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch infotainment systems are defective. The lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California by the CDD.

The complaint alleges that the infotainment system, which was tested in a 2013 Ford F-150 Lariat pickup leased by the CDD -- often freezes and fails to respond to voice and touch commands. It also alleges that the system has a poor connection with mobile phones and MP3 players.

The complaint alleges that the carmaker has knowledge of the defects but did not disclose them to potential customers. Ford has issued several technical service bulletins regarding system errors, and upgraded and extended the warranty on the system following complaints in 2012. Ford chief executive Alan Mulally acknowledged problems with the system in 2011, but remarked that customers would be satisfied after the upgrade.

Ford Motor Co. is facing a suit in United States District Court in Philadelphia filed by Pennsylvania vehicle owners who claim that the carmaker’s hybrid models failed to deliver promised fuel-efficiency numbers. According to a complaint filed Tuesday, the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid and Ford C-Max Hybrid models provide worse fuel economy than the advertised figure of 47 miles per gallon.

Car owners alleged that inaccurate representations allowed Ford to falsely claim that those models outperformed rival models. According to the complaint, the plaintiffs are “some of the tens of thousands of consumers” who bought a Fusion Hybrid or C-Max Hybrid, only to be stuck with underperforming and less valuable vehicles that impose higher fuel costs on owners.

The Ford Fusion was the sixth best-selling model in the US in the first three quarters of 2013. In March, Fusion was being sold faster and at higher prices than the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord.

Twenty consumers filed a lawsuit against Ford, seeking to have the carmaker to pay for selling vehicles claimed to be vulnerable to unintended acceleration. The lawsuit, filed in a West Virginia federal court, claimed that over 30 Ford models equipped with electronic throttle control system did not have installed reliable safety systems like a brake override system.

Covered in the lawsuit are Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and trucks built from 2002 to 2010. The models include the 2004-2010 Ford F-Series pick-up trucks and the 2005-2009 Lincoln Town Car, as well as 2002-2005 Mercury Cougar.

Adam Levitt, a partner at Grant & Eisenhofer and head of the law firm's consumer practice group, told Reuters in a phone interview that the plaintiffs are trying to be compensated for their economic losses “by having overpaid for cars that contained defects." He said had the plaintiffs been aware of the defects, they either would not have purchase the vehicles or would have paid less for them.

Ford Motor Co. filed a legal action against supplier Dana Holding Corp.  on July 27, 2012 in Wayne County Circuit Court for its refusal to reimburse the carmaker for recalled subframes in 1999-2003 Windstar minivans. Ford alleges that Dana refused to pay the carmaker for defective subframes in the Windstars, which were recalled in 2011 in cold weather states.

According to the lawsuit, the refusal constituted a violation of a supply agreement between the companies, in which Dana had "impliedly assured indemnification." Ford recalled around 425,000 Windstars in 22 northern states in 2011 because the subframe parts in some of the minivans were vulnerable to corrosion from road salt used in winter.

Deterioration of those components had led to reduced steering control in some vehicles, thus increasing the risk of an accident. The subframe is a part of the vehicle that supports its engine, transmission, steering rack and front suspension. Legal actions between carmakers and suppliers may mirror a failing relationship between them.

The lawsuit failed against Ford Motor Co. over the death of a New York Mets minor league baseball player was settled after a jury ordered the company to pay $131 million to his estate. The verdict was handed down by a Jasper County, Miss. jury.

Attorney Tab Turner, who represented the family of Brian Cole, said that the settlement is confidential and was made before punitive damages were considered. In March 2001 in Florida, 27-year-old Cole was ejected from an Explorer as he was on his way home from spring training with the Mets.

Turner said that there was physical evidence that Cole had still been wearing the belt when he was thrown out of the car.

Ford Motor Co.’s Explorer family of sports utility vehicles has just been expanded with the arrival of two new models. The base, XLT, Limited and Platinum models of the Explorer are welcoming their newest family members – the Explorer ST and the Explorer Hybrid. The new Ford Explorer Hybrid is the first dedicated hybrid model in the Explorer family. It is powered by a 3.3-liter hybrid powertrain that is expected to deliver 318 hp of total system output, which is sent to the rear wheels of the Explorer Hybrid. Ford is aiming to make the Explorer Hybrid capable of returning more than 500 miles of range before having to refuel.

Furthering the capability of the hybrid powertrain of the new Ford Explorer Hybrid is an all-new 10-speed modular hybrid transmission as well as a liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery. Since the battery is built into the chassis just below the second-row seats, the cargo and passenger room of the Explorer Hybrid remains the same as it conventionally powered siblings.

Ford surprised visitors at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan when it introduced the all-new 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which it touts as the most powerful street-legal Ford so far. The Mustang Shelby GT500 will arrive in Fall 2019, with prices to be announced close to launch date.

Basically a Mustang without a pony logo but with a cobra badge, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be powered by a 5.2-liter V8 engine with Eaton 2.65-liter Supercharger. This mill is mated to a segment-first dual-clutch transmission, a Tremec 7-speed dual clutch transmission that is capable of shifts in under 100 milliseconds.

Ford didn’t disclose the exact output numbers for the 5.2-liter V8 engine, but said that this mill is capable of deliver more than 700 of whooping horsepower. According to Ford, this should allow the new Mustang Shelby GT500 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in mid-three seconds and reach a quarter mile in sub-11 seconds.

When Ford unveiled its new Ford GT nearly four years ago at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the supercar was received very well even through the US carmaker only disclosed a few details. When the company started to produce the Ford GT, one thing was very apparent – the demand for the supercar greatly outstrips the supply. Two years into the supercar’s production, Ford is building more units than previously earmarked.

Even before it started production of the Ford GT, the US carmaker had said only 1,000 units of the supercar will be built. Ford had set the annual production pace for the Ford GT at 250 units every year. This means that supercar would have a production run that would last for around four years.

But when the US carmaker started accepting orders for the Ford GT, the total number of applicants quickly grew to more than 6,500. This number was just for the 2016 iteration of the supercar. Unfortunately, Ford can only accommodate 1,000 of the applicants, which means that the Ford GT is practically sold out.

In June this year, rival carmakers Ford and Volkswagen inked a memorandum of agreement for a possible strategic alliance. Months after signing the MoU, automotive industry analysts are now floating the ideas of possible merger or an equity swap between the American and German companies. Ford is giving potential Fiesta customers more reasons to purchase its world-renowned subcompact. Two of these are the introductions of new sporty model based from the ST-Line trim of the Ford Fiesta. Perhaps the satisfying demand for the ST-Line – which endows the Fiesta a sportier and more dynamic appearance – has led Ford to create two new special editions based on this trim. These new editions – the new Ford Fiesta ST-Line Red Edition and the Fiesta ST-Line Black Edition feature distinctive exterior and interior elements that make them stand out from the rest.

Making full use of Ford Performance-inspired styling, these new Ford Fiesta ST-Line edition models are available in three- and five-door body styles. More and more vehicles are using automatic transmissions to send power from the engine to the wheels. Even supposed sporty cars have been ditching manual transmissions in favor of automatic gearboxes. But the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco could come fitted with a manual transmission, according to a report by Jalopnik.

Citing a number of sources privy with the plans, Jalopnik reported that Ford is tapping Getrag to develop a new manual gearbox for the 2020 Ford Bronco. The partnership between Ford and Getrag to develop a new manual transmission for the Bronco isn't surprising as the German company is also the one producing the manual gearbox – the MT-82 six-speed unit -- for the Ford Mustang. The new manual transmission for the new Bronco will be named as the MT-88. As per Jalopnik’s sources, this Bronco-bound transmission will be a seven-speed unit that would send power to wheels from Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine.

According to Jalopnik, there is a possibility that the new MT-88 manual transmission share components with the MT-82 manual gearbox. Likewise, Ford may also decide to use the new MT-88 manual transmission for the next generation of the Mustang. Nonetheless, while the current plan has the new MT-88 manual transmission being fitted in the Bronco, the fact that the vehicle is still being developed means things may change as Ford gets closer to the official unveiling of the Bronco.

At the start of the year, Ford announced that it is planning to develop a new electric vehicle that focuses on performance. At the announcement, Ford said that the new performance EV would be named Mach 1. Eventually, the Mach 1 moniker was shelved, but not the performance EV. Now, Ford has released a new teaser that officially previews this upcoming EV.

During the January announcement, Ford said that this performance EV would released in 2020. In March this year, Ford Global Markets President Jim Farley remarked that the performance EV would be like a four-door SUV version of a Ford Mustang. Essentially, this means that the new performance EV would be an electric SUV with the looks or performance of the Mustang, or both.

Now, the recently released teaser image looks like a sketched silhouette of Ford’s new performance EV. It may seem so vague and unclear until a closer inspection reveals that it features the rear end of a Ford Mustang. That basically confirms the relationship of the new performance to Ford’s iconic pony car. However, this is a teaser image, and a sketch nonetheless, which means that it final looks may differ from the Mustang but retain some cues that indicate its high-performance nature.
