Lexus tweaks current CT 200h for the final time; drops hybrid from US lineup

It has been six years since Lexus introduced the current generation of the CT 200h hybrid. For the 2018 model year, the current CT 200h lives through with some minor updates on its styling. We are hoping that it is the final facelift for the current generation, as Lexus somewhat signaled the impending arrival of the next-gen model by dropping the CT 200h from its lineup in the United States.

Perhaps the most glaring visual tweak made on the 2018 Lexus CT 200h could be found on its front end, particularly on its F Sport style spindle grille. On the 2017 iteration of the CT 200h, the grille features a horizontal bar. Likewise, although the grille looks as if it is one unit, it is actually interrupted on the mid-section. Meanwhile, the spindle grille on the 2018 CT 200h comes with a mesh pattern, and is now continuous from top section to the bottom.

In addition, the new 2018 Lexus CT 200h is now provided with signature “L” daytime running lights that now employ LED technology, as repositioned just above the single-projector headlamps. Moreover, the fog light bezels are now finished in metallic grey as surrounded by an outer frame with a triangular cross-section.

2014 Lexus CT 200h Facelift gets a price tag of £20,995 in the UK

Lexus is offering a number of upgrades to the CT 200h range, including improvements in styling, handling and equipment. Complementing the upgrades are significant cuts in prices and attractive finance options. The 2014 CT 200h S entry level S model is priced at £20,995, representing a £1,000 cut. Other five variants in the range have their prices trimmed up to £1,500.

The 2014 CT 200h is also available with excellent finance offers: the new CT 200h S can be availed from just £219 per month, while the high-spec Advance model can be availed from £259 per month via Lexus Business Drive contract hire. Aside from the affordable prices, the CT 200h boasts of exceptional fuel efficiency.

Across the CT 200h range, CO2  emissions were all below the 100g/km threshold, and in fact, the S version boasts of a new class-leading low of 82g/km – which means the range carries no charge for annual Vehicle Excise Duty. Business owners also get the lowest band for benefit-in-kind taxation, at 10 per cent for the first year.

Lexus introduces entry-level CT 200h S Grade

Lexus targets a wider range of customers with its new entry-point S grade, making the CT 200h more accessible but without downgrading its luxury and technologies that people have come to expect of Lexus models. The new CT 200h is equipped with new 15-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and a bigger rear spoiler, permitting it to cut its CO2 emissions to 87g/km.

Lexus revised the entire CT 200h model range for 2013. Lexus added to it to get to five model grades, raising the appeal of the only fully hybrid luxury compact hatchback in the market. It also made some slight equipment modifications along with the realignment of the grade structure. Premier, which replaces the SE-L Premier, gets a DAB digital tuner and electric front passenger seat adjustment.

Meanwhile, F Sport gets an electric passenger seat control plus Smart Entry and Start. Luxury (the replacement for the SE-L) gains power-folding door mirrors and Smart Entry and Start. SE, which replaces SE-I, gets power-folding door mirrors. All of the models will get a revised front armrest with more soft padding.

Although Lexus expects sales of its CT 200h hybrid to increase by 25% this year compared to last year, this figure still isn’t at a level that the automaker would be pleased with. In an interview with WardsAuto, Lexus U.S. group vice president and general manager Mark Templin said that with the high demand worldwide not just for the CT but also for other models that use these parts, it makes it difficult for the company to “ramp up” as fast as it wants.

He said that the hybrid will likely reach the 18,000-unit range this year based on the supply that it could get. Last year, Lexus was able to sell 14,381 CT 200hs in the U.S. The CT hatchback, which uses the same powertrain as Toyota’s Prius hybrid, is Lexus’ smallest and most affordable offering in the U.S., with the 2012 model having a starting price of $29,120.

It is also available in Japan, China and Europe. In March 2011, Japan’s auto industry became devastated by a calamity. This is the month that the CT hybrid was launched in the U.S. Toyota’s production suffered. Toyota’s plant in Kyushu, Japan, prioritized the CT and its Prius assembly-line mate. With the boost in production for the 5-door Lexus, its sales in the U.S. increased to over 1,000 units each month, exceeding its goal.

Behind these tires we find the Stop Tech high performance brake kit as well as a new Tein Flex coilover suspension system. Inside, the car features uniquely appointed seats with laser etched ultrasuede ecodesign inserts, custom illuminated headlinder, upholstery by Turinmodel, custom touchscreen interface center console and 3M Crystalline window film by The Tint Factory.

The new Lexus CT 200h F-Sport features a CT 200h hybrid premium, which has had its styling and handling improved. The tweaked suspension represents the key change on the Lexus CT 200h F-Sport. The coil spring rates were switched and the standard Showa shock absorbers have been replaced with Kayaba dampers to offer “more sports-oriented performance.”

Body vibrations are minimized by the lateral dampers, which result to a more linear steering feel and better comfort. External modifications were done on the Lexus CT 200h F-Sport, including 17-inch alloys, a bigger rear spoiler, flared side skirts, a mesh front grille and revised bumpers.

A flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminum pedals and scuff plates were added to the cabin. The F-Sport is based on the CT 200h SE-L trim level but it has gotten cruise control, black leather upholstery, heated front seats, electric driver’s seat adjustment, auto-dimming, electrically retractable door mirrors and a rear parking camera.

It seems that Lexus aims to boost its sales and the only solution would be to introduce new models. Due to the fact that consumers need smaller models, a perfect addition would be a small crossover, based on the popular CT 200h. The idea is not new to us, as back in July we reported that Toyota is planning to launch six new hybrids and one of them would be a new Lexus, dubbed CX 300h, which will hit the showrooms by the end of 2012.

The new crossover will look like a smaller RX and will take on cars such as the Audi Q3, Bmw X1 or the Infiniti EX. Few sources confirmed the fact that the new car will use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine featuring the Hybrid Synergy Drive system used in the Camry Hybrid and the unsuccessful HS 250h dedicated hybrid sedan.

According to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the small crossover will be designed for the European market, but this doesn’t mean that it won’t be offered in the United States. A smaller hybrid crossover would be the perfect addition to Lexus’ lineup as the RX line made up 45 percent of firm’s US sales so far this year.

For those who don’t know, the Lexus CT 200h was launched in spring 2010 and since then the car attracted younger customers to the brand, contributing significantly to company’s growth in Europe. As of March 2011, the Lexus CT 200h accounted more than 70 per cent of Lexus Hybrid Drive orders.

In order to boost the sales even further, the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show marks the debut of the new CT 200h F-Sport, a new version designed to appeal to an even wider customer base.

As expected, the new version will bring a sporty design and will come with design features such as front and rear aero bumpers, a mesh treatment for the upper and lower front grilles, new side skirts, a larger spoiler as well as a new set of 17-inch dark-finish alloy wheels and F-Sport side badges.

The latest Euro NCAP test results give the Lexus CT 200h the top marks when it comes to safety. In several fields, the Lexus hybrid topped its class, with a 94% protection rating for adults. It tied with the Volvo V60. The Lexus hatchback got high scores when it comes to the categories of child protection and safety assist but it tested poorly on pedestrian rating.

In the frontal impact, the passenger compartment remained stable and the knee airbags gave good protection to the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger.

In the side barrier impact, it scored maximum points as all body regions were protected well. In the side pole impact, its chest protection was marginal based on the rib deflections of its dummies. Also well-protected were the three-year dummy (with 11.9 points) and the 18-month dummy (with 11.2 points) out of a total of 12.

Lexus is relying on the CT200h to capture the market and double the brand’s sales in Europe. Most Lexus vehicles are too large for European roads and are simply too expensive but the CT has been ideally packaged and priced to attract younger European buyers. It also has low emissions figures, enabling buyers to be exempted from most of the taxes levied on the car’s rivals.

Sales of the CT200h have yet to hit full swing but the rate of orders being placed by local importers indicate that it will be a hit.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf said that Lexus Netherlands received 1,000 orders for the vehicle. This is lower than the 1,500 units that Lexus seeks to sell this year but it is a big rise when compared to the sales in 2010 of all Lexus models in that country totaling to only 700 units.

Lexus will undertake its "largest campaign in scope and diversity” to launch the CT 200h entry-luxury hybrid, according to Automotive News. As gasoline prices continue to rise, Lexus is taking this opportunity to appeal to younger buyers.

Lexus didn’t divulge how much it intends to spend on the campaign; however, it’s not expected to exceed what was used to launch the original 1989 LS 400 or the 2009 RX 350, which had more of a mainstream media push.

For the CT 200h, Lexus has prepared TV ad spots but the focus will be on social media, YouTube, iTunes and the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

Expect the Lexus to show off its wild side at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show where the carmaker has a 20,000-square-foot exhibit filled with displays of its high-performance products. Lexus will be highlighting sporty accessories and incredible horsepower.

Paul Rohovsky, National Manager of Events and Promotions at Lexus, said that Lexus has been the top luxury brand for over a decade due to its refined sedans and SUVs but he believes the company has so much more to offer. He said that Lexus brings new excitement to the brand with vehicles such as the LFA supercar and youthful Lexus CT 200h entry-luxury hybrid.

Its F Sport accessories give customers the opportunity to boost the performance on several vehicles. One of the head turners in the exhibit is the inspirational and aspirational 552-horsepower V10 LFA supercar.

The new material is tougher, harder wearing and more shrink resistant than the previous bio plastics.

What is really interesting, is that the material is the first in the world to be made using bio-PET, which includes a raw material derived from sugar cane.
