Using cameras to replace the rear and side mirrors isn't something new. However, this technology is usually found on concept vehicles and some exotic cars. But at Lexus, this technology will be installed on one of its premium sedans starting October this year.
Lexus is introducing the world' first Digital Outer Mirrors, which will initially be fitted on the new 2019 Lexus ES. Digital Outer Mirrors make use of small exterior cameras on the front doors. They are mounted on stalks that swell on the place where conventional side mirrors are usually found.
The cameras send images onto displays – each monitor measuring five inches diagonally– inside the cabin, as positioned at the base of the front pillars. Instead of looking through the windows onto the side mirrors, a driver just have to view the images on the displays. This means that the driver’s view of the sides and the rear of the cars aren’t compromised when the windows are dirty or hazy.Read the entire article Side mirrors in 2019 Lexus ES sedan can be replaced with camera-based Digital Outer Mirrors

The seventh generation of the Lexus ES premium sedan (2019 model year) has just been unveiled at the 2018 Auto China (Beijing Motor Show), boasting a more dynamic performance, an all-new exterior design as well as a comfortable and luxurious interior.
Essentially, the 2019 Lexus ES owes its latest evolved character to the all-new Global Architecture-K (GA-K) platform. Compared to its predecessor, the all-new ES is longer by 2.6 inches, lower by 0.2 inches, and wider by 1.8 inches. Its wheelbase is longer by 2 inches while its tracks are wider both on the front (by 0.4 inches) and the rear (by 1.5 inches). The Global Architecture-K chassis is a rigid front-wheel drive chassis that makes use of various grades of high-tensile steel to save weight. It features enhancements like an all-new double wishbone suspension design, rack-mounted electric power steering and a V-brace mounted behind the rear seat.
This new platform allowed the new ES to feature a dynamic yet fluid shape, as well as a characteristic silhouette highlighted by an aggressive downward slant. Thanks to its lower height and its fast roofline, the new ES offers a coupe-like profile, a lower and wind-cheating aerodynamics. Up front, the ES features a larger spindle with vertical bars on the ES 350 and the ES 350h, or a blacked out cross-hatch pattern on the ES 350 F SPORT.Read the entire article Lexus unveils seventh-generation ES premium midsize luxury sedan at Beijing Motor Show

Toyota Motor Corp. is investigating claims that its new Lexus ES and GS sedans have emergency trunk release handles that easily break and risk trapping someone in the cargo space. In a statement, nonprofit publication Consumer Reports magazine said that the defect was identified by accident during an evaluation of 2013 models of the two cars.
Jake Fisher, the director of vehicle testing of Consumer Reports, said that his 4-year-old son got into the ES 350's trunk to try the interior release. He said that the boy snapped off the lever that opens the lid and so he could only get out after the trunk was opened from the outside.
He said that tests of release handles in 2013 ES hybrid and GS 350 sedans indicated that they could snap too if the levers are pulled toward the driver's side. Toyota has recently issued the worldwide recall of 7.4 million vehicles this week to repair defective power-window switches.Read the entire article Toyota investigating Lexus ES, GS as their trunks can trap people inside
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Dodge Dart as one of four new vehicles available in the U.S. to earn the "Top Safety Pick" award. The 2013 Dart is the first model that Fiat S.p.A. and Chrysler Group LLC jointly engineered and designed. Being named a "Top Safety Pick" means that the vehicle had a good performance in test crashes that evaluated front, side and rear impacts, and even rollovers. Reid Bigland, chief of Chrysler's Dodge brand, said that its engineers were able to deliver on their high expectations for the Dart.
Russ Rader, IIHS spokesman, said that the IIHS tested 180 vehicles for the 2012 model year. From that batch, 132 were awarded the Top Safety Pick designation. This December, the IIHS will issue its annual list of the safety report for vehicles available in the U.S. market.Read the entire article Dodge Dart, Lexus ES 350, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru XV Crosstrek named Top Safety Picks

Toyota Motor Corp. has started building its revamped Lexus ES sedan in Japan, taking on the challenge of running more costly factories at its home country to cope with demand in the United States and China. Toyota is aiming to achieve an annual production figure of around 3 million vehicles in Japan, which is almost triple the amount that its local rivals Nissan Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. produce.
It also represents around 40 percent of the cars and trucks that Toyota builds globally. The only Lexus model that Toyota produces outside Japan is the Lexus RX sport-utility vehicle, which is being built in Ontario, Canada.
Japanese car manufacturers are usually averse to producing at its home turf in order to prevent the strong yen to continue eating up their profits on imports. Toyota’s strategy with Lexus leaves the brand exposed to the effects of the strong yen.Read the entire article Lexus starts producing ES sedan in Japan despite Yen risks
