Lexus brings special edition 10th anniversary models of the GS F and RC F to Chicago Auto Show

To celebrate 10 years of its high-performance F cars, Lexus plans to come out with a couple of special edition models. These will include a 2018 Lexus GS F sedan, together with an RC F Coupe, and both will be dressed to make them stand out when they’re on display at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. Both models will be given the same gray suit with blue accents inside and out.

This may already sound familiar to you, as the automaker actually has already brought them to the Tokyo Motor Show late last year. But what we know at that time was that those models will be exclusive to the Japanese market only – apparently, that has changed.

And yes, we are right about that. Though it will just be a limited model in the US, with only 340 units, the good news is that it will be available, and it will likely be very difficult to get one. Only 240 anniversary versions of the RC F coupe will be built, and 100 units of the thinner GS F sedans will get the special treatment. Each Lexus dealer in the US will only carry one unit of the coupe.

Is Lexus going to drop the GS from its lineup in 2018?

Since 1993, Lexus has produced 4 generations of the Lexus GS, with the GS F amongst its newest member of the family. Unfortunately, rumors are also heating up that the luxurious sedan will no longer see the light of day within the next few years. found out about the sad news by sifting through the pages of MAG-X, a Japanese magazine which was published in January. According to a source, the lengthy article, which had to be translated in English stated the GS is slated to bow out of the league after its current generation.

There are also some insinuations that the LS will be its immediate replacement --considering it also comes with the new V6 engine. With the increasing demand for the LS, it says Toyota Motors Corporation arrived at a decision to remove the GS from their lineup. In all, having the same V6 engine for both the GS and the LS must have caused a product overlap in their existing line.

2015 NAIAS Preview: 2016 Lexus GS F is the answer to the BMW M5

This is it folks, Lexus has just unveiled the all-new 2016 GS F high-performance sedan and promised us that it will bring it to the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Just like the RC F, the new 2016 Lexus GS F is powered by the naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine that generates 467 hp at 7,100 rpm and 389 lb-ft (527 Nm) of torque at 4,800-5,600 rpm.

As expected, the engine is bolted to an 8-speed automatic transmission. As standard, the GS F will arrive with Lexus’ innovative Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD), featuring three operating modes: Standard, which provides a balance of agility and firmness; Slalom, emphasizing nimble steering response and agility; Track, which emphasizes control during high-speed circuit driving.

There are no details regarding the performances of the new vehicle, but we do expect it to be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 5.0 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 250 km/h or 155 mph. Using the same platform as the current GS 350 F Sport, the new Lexus GS F features structural reinforcements as well as a suspension exclusively designed in order to optimize the handling.

Toyota investigating Lexus ES, GS as their trunks can trap people inside

Toyota Motor Corp. is investigating claims that its new Lexus ES and GS sedans have emergency trunk release handles that easily break and risk trapping someone in the cargo space. In a statement, nonprofit publication Consumer Reports magazine said that the defect was identified by accident during an evaluation of 2013 models of the two cars.

Jake Fisher, the director of vehicle testing of Consumer Reports, said that his 4-year-old son got into the ES 350's trunk to try the interior release. He said that the boy snapped off the lever that opens the lid and so he could only get out after the trunk was opened from the outside.

He said that tests of release handles in 2013 ES hybrid and GS 350 sedans indicated that they could snap too if the levers are pulled toward the driver's side. Toyota has recently issued the worldwide recall of 7.4 million vehicles this week to repair defective power-window switches.

After introducing the GS250, it appears that Lexus also wants a more affordable hybrid version of its sedan in order to boost sales. MSN Cars reports that a new hybrid GS model is on its way and it will join the range alongside the existing GS450h.

These words came from President and Managing Director of Toyota Lexus GB, Jon Williams, who confirmed the new model during a press conference during the European launch of the new GS.

As expected, Williams didn’t give any details regarding the new car. If the GS450h is powered by 3.5-liter the new hybrid model is expected to get an even smaller engine than the 2.5-liter V6 found on the GS250.

If you miss the old Lexus SC 430 then we have some good news for you: the Japanese manufacturer will add a new coupe based on the current GS in 2013. Dubbed Lexus GS Coupe, the new model will arrive as a 2014 model year and will be a successor to the SC 430 which was discontinued back in 2010.

According to InsideLine, the Lexus officials said that the company needs a high-end coupe in its lineup. As expected, the new vehicle will carry the same grille seen on the 2013 GS, RX and ES. Thanks to its dimensions, the new rear-wheel-drive coupe will take on cars such as the Audi A5/S5, the Bmw 6-Series but also on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

Regarding the price, $60k could be the base for a GS Coupe. The engines remain a problem, as the GS 350 is powered only by a 3.5-liter V6 with 306 hp and a sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 5.7 seconds. There are chances to see the coupe as a GS-F model with a unique drivetrain and tuning.

Lexus’ latest marketing campaign, a sexy one, has helped Toyota’s premium unit to exceed its total GS series US sales for the full year of 2011 in just two months in 2012. Lexus has exploited the beauty and glamour of Sports Illustrated model Tori Praver for a publicity stunt in February, which resulted in the sales of more than 4,900 GS cars in the US.

The publicity stunt includes giving away a Tori 500 app for the iPhone and iPad to customers buying the cars. The stunt was also part of Lexus’ plan to distinguish itself as a separate brand from Toyota; as consumers have, for many years, perceived the brand as just an upgraded version of the Japanese carmaker.

With this in mind, Lexus aims to attract owners who for years have preferred BMW and Mercedes-Benz, according to Kiyotaka Ise, Lexus’ managing director, adding that the company wanted consumers to choose the brand for its character and handling.

The 2013 GS 450h is equipped with the second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system and produces 338 total system hp while it returns a 31 combined city/highway mpg. Lexus’ senior Toyota management has yet to approve of product planning chief Karl Schlicht’s plan to start production of a top-performance GS-F super-saloon that will compete with the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. There have long been rumors that a GS-F is included in Lexus’s drive to boost the brand’s sporting image instead of being known as a producer of cars that are incredibly safe but are uninspired.

The GS-F would then be the last piece in a five-part product strategy. Lexus’ launch of the V10-powered LFA supercar, smaller V8-powered IS-F sports saloon and more focused F Sport trim levels in its standard range has already taken place.

Lexus is also reviving its lineup to have more distinctive designs. It also wants to focus more on the driving dynamics. Schlicht said that with a GS-F, there would be a “solid pyramid structure of performance models.” He said that it’s crucial that Lexus retains its refinement. If approved, it’s probable that the GS-F would be a powerful grand tourer instead of being an utterly focused driving tool.

Lexus is working on a small hybrid engine so that its new GS luxury car could compete with its European rivals that offer higher fuel efficiency. Koji Sato, deputy chief engineer, product planning, told Auto Express that it is developing several solutions so that CO2 emissions will drop. A small hybrid is one of the things being considered.

The launch for the new GS in the UK will take place this summer. Only two versions will be offered: the top-of-the-line GS 450h with a 338bhp 3.5-litre V6 hybrid and the entry-level GS 250 that’s equipped with a 206bhp 2.5-litre V6.

The new GS, a small efficient and low-emissions hybrid, is expected to go up against popular models such as the BMW 520d and Audi A6 2.0 TDI. Lexus currently isn’t planning to make a diesel version. Sato said that Lexus is strongly associated with the hybrid, something that it wants to continue to work on.

There is growing evidence that Lexus will be producing a coupe version of its all-new GS350. Lexus Corporate Manager of Product Planning Ben Mitchell, who was present at the launch of the luxury sedan, declined to provide details about a possible GS-F to compete with the BMW M5.

Mitchell said that he had “nothing to announce” but he did say that as the SC430 ends its run, there is a slot in the lineup that has to be filled.

Mitchell talked to a group of journalists who had only good things to say about the Audi A5/S5.

Upon the unveiling of the 2013 Lexus GS, it becomes all the more believable that Lexus will soon release a performance version of the sedan that will rival the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz C63. It has been speculated that this model will be named the GS F, drawn from the fact that the high-performance V8-powered version of the smaller IS is known as the IS F.

Lexus has yet to confirm that there will be a GS F but Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda implied that there is such a model when he recently spoke with journalists in Pebble Beach, California.

Toyoda said that he is hoping that the “most sophisticated” drivers will choose Lexus and that the brand will compete globally, according to InsideLine. He assured the journalists that the high-performance Lexus models such as the F Sport and F models will be staying.

The next-generation Lexus GS 350 sport sedan has recently been unveiled. Set to go on sale in early 2012, the 2013 GS will bear the sheet-metal and interior design elements that will be seen throughout the brand for the several years to come. A V-8 version won’t be available as this model will only come only with a V-6 or V-6 hybrid powertrain.

For the two older GS generations, a V-8 version was offered but it only accounted for 10% of all model sales. Many observers have said that when the GS sedan is placed side by side with rivals like the BMW 5 series, Mercedes E class and Audi A6, it appears plain and bloated. It was in 2006 that the U.S. sales of the current generation model peaked with 27,390 units sold but it has since tapered off and in 2010, only 7,059 units were sold.

Lexus is relying on the new GS so that it could make up for the share losses this year to Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the U.S. For 11 consecutive years, Lexus was the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S. but it’s expected to give up its top spot to one of its two German rivals this year.
