Lexus is back in the US luxury sales race thanks to revamped IS sedan and GX SUV

Lexus was the best-selling carmaker in the United States for 11 years until 2011. Now, the market has been dominated by German luxury carmakers for three years in a row, with BMW pacing the pack. But Lexus is slowly but surely catching up. In fact, Lexus outsold Mercedes-Benz in May for the second time in five months.

It also managed to trim the lead of BMW to around 12,000 units in the year to date. The luxury unit of Toyota Motor Corp. might be able to trim the gap further as it is set introduce this year its first compact crossover, the NX, and the RC sports coupe.

Mark Templin, executive vice president of Lexus, told Bloomberg in an interview that the volume is not their goal, but “to do the right things." He said that it was nice to know that consumers are responding to the newly launched products.

Lexus will launch a next-generation GX SUV this fall

Since its release on the market back in 2003 the Lexus GX midsize luxury SUV has experienced a level of success with 34,420 units sold in 2004, its best year in the books, a number which is well beyond the 20,000 units annual target of the company.

However, in recent years the demand for the midsize luxury has waned and this year sales have reached an all drop in excess of 52 percent.

Even though the competitions are anticipated to begin totally pulling out of the segment, it is the intention of Lexus to wait it out by introducing a modified GX.

Safety tests will be conducted on Toyota Motor Co.'s new Lexus SUV by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to a top US auto safety official, the agency will take action if the vehicle fails to meet government standards.

Before influential magazine Consumer Reports published a preliminary report that warned the public about the safety risks posed by the 2010 Lexus GX 460, the NHTSA had already been given a copy of the results.

At the sidelines of the SAE International 2010 World Congress in Detroit, NHTSA chief David Strickland said that his compliance staff will be examining these vehicles, including the car that was tested at Consumer Reports.

Toyota Motor Corp. ends speculation and has announced that it will recall the 2010 Lexus GX 460, the Lexus SUV that Consumer Reports magazine named to be a "safety risk."

In a statement, Toyota said that about 9,400 vehicles will be included in the recall. Toyota said that the vehicles will be given software updates on their vehicle stability control systems, which helps control a loss of traction during turns.

Toyota said that it aims to provide a high level of safety and quality, while meeting or surpassing governmental regulations, according to Steve St. Angelo, Toyota's chief quality officer for North America.
