Lexus unveils three-row 2018 RX L at 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

The Lexus RX midsize sports utility vehicle is known to offer high levels of luxury. But now, Lexus has managed to offer a third row of seats in the RX, and is bringing this more spacious SUV to the United States. The Japanese premium carmaker made this announcement upon the launch of the new 2018 Lexus RX L at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

As Lexus disclosed, the new Lexus RX L will be sold in two flavors: the RX 350L and RX 450hL. These models carry the design of their shorter siblings but are now capable of accommodating up to seven occupants, depending on the seating configuration chosen by the customer. At first, people might see the new RX L as the long wheelbase version of the RX. This isn't surprising, considering the fact that other vehicles usually have their cabin space expanded by lengthening their wheelbase. However, doing so might compromise both maneuverability and styling.

Thus, in the case of the new Lexus RX L, the Japanese premium carmaker didn’t add the third row of seats by lengthening the wheelbase. Instead, Lexus tapped on its expertise in vehicle packaging and extended the length of the body 4.3 inches (110 mm) to the rear, thereby lengthening the rear overhangs. In addition, Lexus had to make sure that third-row occupants still enjoy generous headroom. This was achieved by employing a steeper tailgate window angle than on the two-row RX models. Since the second row is positioned a bit higher than the third row, more foot room is created for rear passengers.

Three-row Lexus RXL SUV will be on display at the 2017 LA Auto Show

Automakers typically release teasers online before any new vehicle’s live debut. After the previews of the Mazda6 and the BMW X3, it’s now Lexus that has shared images of its three-row RXL SUV that will soon make its way to US soil. There’s no doubt about it. This Lexus RXL is the longer Lexus car that we have all been waiting for.

It has been a while since we first heard rumours about a larger and more luxurious Lexus RX, and finally, we will see the extended SUV at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. Both models, namely the RX 350L and RX 450hL, were both teased in a duo of images. However, these images don’t give us a lot of information when it comes to its final look.

Before today, the Lexus was already rumoured to appear in its hometown during the Tokyo Motor Show. But that never came to pass and it seems like they would rather bring the new SUV to North America. Similar to the current RX, sources say that the new RX 350L will ride on the same platform as today’s RX, but with a little increase in rear overhang.

Lexus to reveal three-row RX at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show

Lexus has always had a nice range of cars, but they haven’t really covered all segments yet. For instance, if you’re looking for a three-row crossover, the only models Lexus could offer you are the GX and the LX. Both of which are huge and have a truck-like body. There is also the smaller RX that you could go for, but it only has two rows.

Last March, the Japanese company announced the arrival of a new crossover with three-rows, but it has been a year and we have not seen it yet. The good news is that the RX finally gets a three-row version, fulfilling a lot of people’s dreams. And according to Japanese car outlet Mag-X reports, the new RX crossover is scheduled to make a debut in October at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. The RX is actually one of the company’s bestselling cars, and now that it has evolved into a three-row crossover, Lexus sales will probably shoot up as well.

According to more reports, the updated crossover will have the same wheelbase as its predecessor, with the rear overhang slightly extended. Now I wonder how tight it will be if there are three rows, considering the fact that the current model’s second row is already very close to the rear glass. This might actually mean no trunk space for the new RX.

Integrated multimedia campaign is launched for 2016 Lexus RX in the US

Lexus has launched a national integrated marketing campaign for the redesigned Lexus RX, targeting customers seeking an SUV that mirrors and matches their interesting yet dynamic lifestyles. This marketing is aiming to highlight the significant transformation that the Lexus RX has undergone – from its newly styled exterior to its contemporary interior.

According to Brian Smith, Lexus vice president of marketing, the premium carmaker has reimagined the RX luxury crossover inside and out to better appeal to modern families as well as youthful yet culturally engaged customers. He quipped that the marketing campaign tells how Lexus has transformed the RX and redefined sophistication.

The campaign took off with two national TV commercials, both underscoring the vehicle's performance and design. For instance, the spot titled “Beautiful Contrast” features an elegant woman strolling past a number of classic landmarks in Europe and a man piloting a new RX past the city’s modern attractions.

The 2016 Lexus RX is the latest model to receive company’s new design language and those who will attend the 2015 New York Auto Show will be able to see the new model in flesh. Lexus says that its new model will redefine the luxury sport utility segment and looking on the photos we believe the same thing.

The first visual impact with the vehicle shows the new emboldened spindle grille, an aggressive front bumper as well as the available triple L-shaped LED headlamps. Moreover, the front end features new LED fog lamps and LED daytime running lights, but also muscular front fender flares. Seen from the side, the 2016 Lexus RX shows a sharp character line that runs from the front fenders to the rear end, together with a flowing roofline.

The most distinctive design elements are the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide the illusion of a floating roofline, something never seen before on a Lexus vehicle. Also new are the 20-inch aluminum wheels with larger tires, which replace the current 19-inch options. The Japanese manufacturer says that the 20-inch wheels can be customized with body color-matching inserts.

With thousands of orders already booked in Japan, the new Lexus NX compact crossover may dethrone the RX as the marque’s best-selling nameplate. Lexus started selling the NX in Japan on July 29, and has already booked 8,000 orders since, according to Lexus International Executive Vice President Mark Templin. Lexus was expecting initial monthly orders of 700.

Templin also disclosed that customer has booked a year’s worth of orders in Hong Kong and Taiwan with heavy orders being received in Europe, Russia and China. While Toyota will not start selling the NX in the United States until November, the carmaker said it already received some 5,000 orders.

Lexus General Manager Jeff Bracken said during the NX’s line-off ceremony in Japan that they are expecting to sell around 42,000 units in 2015.

A car-based seven-seat crossover is being planned by Lexus as the luxury carmaker bids to enter the in-demand segment. The new offering could be achieved either by launching out a new vehicle or by increasing the size of the Lexus RX 350. Lexus Division chief Jeff Bracken remarked that the third-row seating – only offered in seven-seat crossovers -- is the No. 1 issue they hear from dealers.

He noted that seven-seat crossover represents a “35,000-units-a-year opportunity.” Lexus main crossover offering is the mid-sized five-seat RX 350 and has over than 100,000 units annually. The RX is underpinned by the platform of the Toyota Highlander that was redesigned this year. Lexus, however, won’t introduce its own variant until late next year, to pave way for the arrival of the compact NX 200t and NX 300h five-seat crossovers this winter.

While the carmaker already offers a seven-seat SUV in the persona of the GX 460, it is a body-on-frame SUV with a truck-like ride. The plan for a car-based seven-seat crossover has given rise to speculations that it would trim the need for the GX 460.

These are the first photos with the 2014 Toyota Harrier that will be unveiled later this year. As you can see from the photos, the 2014MY Harrier looks more luxurious than its predecessor and its design looks inspired by the Lexus RX. In fact, this new-generation Harrier could inspire the next-gen Lexus RX, but there isn’t something official yet.

Regarding the 2014 Harrier, the new model features a more prominent front grille, larger air intakes and a stylish rear end with wide taillights. The models shown in the pictures is actually the hybrid version, but currently there isn’t any info regarding the engine, although it is believed to use the same 3.5-liter V6 found on the Lexus RX450h.

The next-generation Lexus RX is expected to be inspired by this new Harrier model but more details will be revealed this winter, when Toyota will bring it at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show or at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, that take place at the end of November.

Toyota Motor Corp. mulls building more Lexus RX sport utility vehicles, the best-selling Lexus model worldwide, for North America by increasing its production capacity in Canada, a source told Reuters. The carmaker’s Ontario plant in Canada, the only site outside Japan that builds Lexus models, produced 65,000 RX SUVs in 2011.

Since it is costlier for Toyota to export vehicles from Japan due to the strong yen, the carmaker has been shifting some of its domestic production out of the country to places where it markets its products. Despite the strategy, Toyota has repeatedly vowed to retain the production of around 3 million vehicles annually in Japan, which almost tripled the domestic output of its local rivals Nissan and Honda.

According to a recent report by public broadcaster NHK, Toyota is planning to increase the production capacity of its Toronto plant in 2014 and is considering shifting production of about 30,000 RX SUVs from its Miyata factory in southern Japan to Canada. In 2011, Toyota built around 81,000 RX SUVs at its Miyata plant.

Lexus RX270 is entering new markets, making the luxury brand easier to afford in the crossover segment. However, don’t rush to locate your nearest dealer just yet. Lexus Australia said that it will add a new, entry-level RX270 to its SUV lineup, with the help of a 2.7-liter, four-cylinder gas engine with 185-hp. This model has a lower price point, but is more fuel efficient RX model that will be offered in just two-wheel drive.

It’s believed that the RX270 will have a price tag of about US$70,000 – about $69,000 US. If that sounds mighty expensive for an entry-level RX, it is compared to the market. It should be emphasized though that the RX350, which costs $82,814, is Australian.

About 300 lbs of the weight is dropped compared to the RX350 model by designing the RX270 to be two-wheel drive only. The F Sport variants of the RX model will also appear with the new, third-generation RX. These would be offered in Australia. Lexus has yet to confirm speculations that it will produce a cheaper and more frugal RX270 in this country.

The latest Lexus RX 450h, which was revealed at the LA Auto Show last year and previewed at a first drive event early this year, has finally received a price tag.

Together with the RX 450h, the latest IS Convertible has likewise received a sticker price, and both begin in the neighborhood of $40,000, with the RX at $41,660 and the $5,000 less for its non-hybrid brother.

It is still an open question whether this price difference reflect value considering the small difference in fuel efficiency, but certainly the 350 does not have the green image that the 450h projects.

Two new versions for Lexus RX450h will soon be introduced. The RX450h had previously been offered only with all wheel drive but now, buyers may choose a front wheel drive version.

The new version maximizes what the hybrid powertrain could offer when it comes to fuel consumption and emissions. In fact, Lexus claims that this vehicle has an efficiency of 6.0 liters per 100 km and only emits140 grams of CO2 per km.

Meanwhile, the vehicle's powertrain is unchanged. It still features the 250 hp 3.5 liter V6 petrol unit that's partnered with a 167 hp dual electric motor.
