Lincoln MKS, BMW 5-Series earned poor rating in IIHS small overlap test

The BMW 5 series and the Lincoln MKS sat on the bottom of the pack of large luxury sedans that underwent the small-overlap crash test conducted by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The MKS received the lowest rating “poor” on the test while the BMW 5 series got a “marginal” rating.

This time, seven large sedans underwent the test, with the Infiniti Q70 sedan getting the top rating of “good.” IIHS said in a statement that driver space in the Q70 was protected “reasonably well,” and that test dummy measurements showed a low risk of serious driver injury following the crash.

As for the MKS, IIHS said the driver space in the vehicle was “severely limited” after the crash, adding there could be “likely” injuries to the driver’s left hip and “possible” left knee and lower leg injuries.

Consumer Reports not impressed by the 2013 Dodge Dart, Lincoln MKS, Cadillac XTS

Testers for Consumer Reports magazine were not impressed by several models that they recently examined. The 2013 Dodge Dart was described as "underpowered” while they claimed to be “underwhelmed” by General Motors Co's 2013 Cadillac XTS and Ford Motor Co's 2013 Lincoln MKS. The testers recommended Toyota Motor Corp's redesigned Lexus ES sedan but they clarified that the 2013 model doesn’t have the same ride and interior refinement as the previous ES.

The 2013 Dart sedan is the first jointly developed model from Fiat SpA and Chrysler. The 2013 Dart sedan considers the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus as its rivals.

Consumer Reports praised the "solid feel, handling and ride" of the Dart but it said that the compact sedan can’t be comparable yet to the best models in the class. Consumer Reports gave the Cadillac model a higher ranking than the Lincoln but still, none of them earned its recommendation.

An automatic parking system is going to be introduced by Ford in its lead Lincoln MKS sedan, on top of the upcoming Lincoln MKT 7-seat luxury crossover, to make parallel parking much easier. Recognized as 'Active Park Assist', the system will be offered in the middle of next year as an option on both models.

At the onset of this year, it was reported that Ford was intending on installing around 90% of its vehicles with electronic steering, and that this electronic steering technology would make easy the implementation of an automatic parking system, like the ones seen in luxury brands such as Lexus.

However, not like camera-based systems utilized in Lexus versions, 'Active Park Assist' employs an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to prep the vehicle for parallel parking, compute the optimal angle for steering and guide the vehicle into a parking spot.
