2013 Lincoln MKT arrives with sharper handling and better fuel economy

The 2013 Lincoln MKT made its debut today at the 2011 LA Auto Show and according to FoMoCo it will offer a dramatically improved ride, sharper handling, better fuel economy but also new technologies such as rear inflatable seat belts. Under the hood, we find a 3.7-liter V6 engine delivering 300 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque.

Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the engine promises to deliver a fuel economy of 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, a 1 mpg highway improvement. If you want more power, the 2013 Lincoln MKT is also available with a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 delivering 355 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 350 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm. This model promises a fuel economy of 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

The engines are equipped with two versions of the six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission: the 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6 uses the 6F-50, and the more powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 uses the heavy-duty 6F-55. All-wheel drive comes as standard on the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, but the intelligent system is able to route the power only on the front wheels in good weather over smooth roads at modest speeds.

Ford is expected to begin massive revisions to the Lincoln products for the 2012 model year. The transformation of Ford’s often-criticized Lincoln brand may start to take place at the end of the year. Sources say that Lincoln will start with overhauling the looks of existing products.

Sources say that the MKS sedan (which was launched four years ago) will be given a mid-cycle update that will debut by the end of the year, most likely at the Los Angeles auto show.

There have been several disguised MKT prototypes spied in the metropolitan Detroit area, which suggests that it will have a makeover in the same time frame.

2012 Lincoln MKT sees a price drop, now costs $46,295

A price drop has been announced for the 2012 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost, which will now cost $46,295. This makes it cheaper by $3,000 compared to the 2011 model. It also means that it has the same price as the discontinued all-wheel drive 3.7-liter V-6 equipped MKT and it is just $1,985 more expensive than a range-topping Ford Flex Titanium, which is definitely more popular than the Lincoln MKT line.

The Lincoln MKT with Ecoboost and its Ford Flex Titanium twin are both all-wheel drive and are powered by the 355hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. There is no difference in specs but the $3,000 price drop leads us to ask why.

Lincoln officially states that it “realigned” the price and equipment of the MKT for model year 2012 so that it could stay competitive in the premium segment and to raise is appeal to target customers.

Lincoln introduces chauffeur-dedicated 2012 MKT Town Car and Limousine

Lincoln offers the new MKT Town Car as an alternative to the Town Car, which will be phased out along with other vehicles that are built on the Panther Platform such as the Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The Lincoln Town Car is famous for being the “black car,” a private limo for the wealthy individuals of New York and other cities.

This big sedan was a rear-drive, body-on-frame vehicle that was well-liked for its robust nature, cheap repair costs and the fact that it only required routine maintenance.

On the other hand, Lincoln’s replacement, the MKT, is based on a front-drive chassis (though all-wheel-drive is available) and uses a modern V6 engine.

Lincoln is anticipating that sales of the MKT crossover would pick up but instead of the mass markets, the carmaker is hoping that the model will do well in unconventional ones. Last October, Lincoln divulged that two modified MKT platforms were in development for the livery market -- replacements for the base and stretched Town Car.

The livery business workhorse is set to be discontinued in August 2011. Then there’s the MKT-based hearse for the funeral business. It’s apparent that the MKT's wheelbase was significantly stretched. The rear passenger door is a lot longer than the door on the regular MKT.

Its roof has been padded and it has been raised by almost a foot. The rear-end styling was significantly reworked to accommodate a wide door that is hinged on the left side.

An automatic parking system is going to be introduced by Ford in its lead Lincoln MKS sedan, on top of the upcoming Lincoln MKT 7-seat luxury crossover, to make parallel parking much easier. Recognized as 'Active Park Assist', the system will be offered in the middle of next year as an option on both models.

At the onset of this year, it was reported that Ford was intending on installing around 90% of its vehicles with electronic steering, and that this electronic steering technology would make easy the implementation of an automatic parking system, like the ones seen in luxury brands such as Lexus.

However, not like camera-based systems utilized in Lexus versions, 'Active Park Assist' employs an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to prep the vehicle for parallel parking, compute the optimal angle for steering and guide the vehicle into a parking spot.

Only existed as a concept during the Detroit Auto Show the previous year, Lincoln has introduced a production version of the stunning MKT crossover for 2010 which comes with three rows of seats in contrast to the two rows of MKX. MKT is a member of Lincoln's upgraded range together with the MKZ sedan.

The new MKT production model highlights a split waterfall grill, a beveled chamfer running on its shoulder line, a flowing cantrail that serves as a frame for the windows and a horizontal taillight that spreads across its full width covering the liftgate. The interior features leather-trimmed seats, floating armrests, and a flow-through second-row center console as an option and LED-highlighted instrument cluster.

Optional features consist of panoramic roof with fixed glass or a power adaptable variant, 6 or 7 passenger configuration with two choices of second row seating arrangements, a regular 60/40 split folding rear bench seat that comes with outboard seating positions, and a refrigerator at the rear console.
