China-exclusive 2019 Mercedes-Benz GCL L long-wheelbase finally introduced

The battle for supremacy in China among premium SUVs with long wheelbases will soon hot as Mercedes-Benz reveals the long-wheelbase version of the GLC. The new Mercedes-Benz GLC L will only be sold in the Chinese market and will compete against the long-wheelbase variant of the Audi Q5 crossover (Q5 L). Mercedes-Benz is expected to unveil the new GCL L to the public at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in November 2018.

When compared, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC L basically looks like the regular wheelbase version – just like any extended model being sold in the Chinese market. However, the long wheelbase variant of the GCL does appear extended on the side because of its now stretched length. This is evident beyond the B-pillars of the new GLC L, where the roofline looks to have grown longer. This is also evident when looking at its rear doors, which now appear to be longer than those in the regular wheelbase version of the GLC SUV.

For its exact dimensions, the new Mercedes GCL L measures around 4.76 meters (187.6 inches) in overall length as well as 1.89 meters (74.7 inches) in overall width. Its wheelbase – the main focus of this version – has grown by around 100 mm (3.93 inches). An extended wheelbase typically results to larger space in the rear cabin, given rear passengers more room to operate, especially with their legs. Since many people in China tend to be chauffeured off than to drive, vehicles with long wheelbases are a hit in this part of the world. Nonetheless, Mercedes will offer both versions of the GLC – regular model and the L variant – in China.

Klassen is offering to convert the Rolls-Royce Cullinan into a long-wheelbase model

Once considered the most anticipated sports utility vehicle in the world, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan was the brand’s first SUV. Since it was launch, the ultra-luxurious SUV has been exceeding the Rolls-Royce sales expectations. Now, the Cullinan is made more opulent with a stretched wheelbase version as created by German company Klassen.

Tagged as the Rolls-Royce of SUVs, the Cullinan is meant to appeal to wealthy customers looking for a potent, ultra-luxurious yet highly practical SUV. But the people at Klassen know that ultra-rich people see luxurious mobility as being driven, not being behind the wheel. Thus, cabin space is of utmost importance to them, and luxurious cars with long wheelbase are heavily preferred. Klassen seeks to redefine the opulence of the Cullinan by creating a long-wheelbase version.

Klassen is not new to stretching high-end vehicles. In fact, creating long wheelbase models is its specialty. It has already created long wheelbase version of a number of luxury models, such as the Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, Mercedes G-Class and the Range Rover Autobiography. With the Rolls-Royce Cullinan tagged as an ultra-luxurious SUV, there is nothing that can prevent Klassen from giving this model a long-wheelbase makeover.

Long wheelbase Mercedes-Benz GLC-L is ready to make its debut in China

The Chinese market will soon be getting the exclusive China-only model, Mercedes-Benz GLC-L, for a premium of 15,000 yuan ($2,300) more than the regular model.

The difference is actually quite noticeable as this model has a longer wheelbase. It had been increased by 10 cm (3.93 inches). As you can see from the images from CarNewsChina and Autohome, the roofline seems to have grown starting from the B-pillar.

Since we are discussing a longer wheelbase, then we might as well talk about the vehicle’s dimensions. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-L is 4,765 mm (15.6 feet) long, 1,898 mm (6.2 feet) wide, and 1,648 mm (5.4 feet) high. Its wheelbase has grown to a total of 2,973 mm (9.7 feet).

Lexus unveils three-row 2018 RX L at 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

The Lexus RX midsize sports utility vehicle is known to offer high levels of luxury. But now, Lexus has managed to offer a third row of seats in the RX, and is bringing this more spacious SUV to the United States. The Japanese premium carmaker made this announcement upon the launch of the new 2018 Lexus RX L at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

As Lexus disclosed, the new Lexus RX L will be sold in two flavors: the RX 350L and RX 450hL. These models carry the design of their shorter siblings but are now capable of accommodating up to seven occupants, depending on the seating configuration chosen by the customer. At first, people might see the new RX L as the long wheelbase version of the RX. This isn't surprising, considering the fact that other vehicles usually have their cabin space expanded by lengthening their wheelbase. However, doing so might compromise both maneuverability and styling.

Thus, in the case of the new Lexus RX L, the Japanese premium carmaker didn’t add the third row of seats by lengthening the wheelbase. Instead, Lexus tapped on its expertise in vehicle packaging and extended the length of the body 4.3 inches (110 mm) to the rear, thereby lengthening the rear overhangs. In addition, Lexus had to make sure that third-row occupants still enjoy generous headroom. This was achieved by employing a steeper tailgate window angle than on the two-row RX models. Since the second row is positioned a bit higher than the third row, more foot room is created for rear passengers.

The 2018 Jaguar XEL with its stretched-out wheelbase and longer doors is the newest addition to the growing list of premium sedans in China---joining the ranks of Mercedes-Benz C-Class L, BMW 3Li and Audi A4L in the long wheelbase category.

Given the increased wheelbase measurement, the XEL is basically an upsized XE variant. But to further differentiate between the regular XE and the elongated sedan, the XEL’s side sills and door handles have been specially painted in chrome in addition to the special XEL badges placed across the windows.

The wheelbase now has an overall measurement of 2,935mm (or 115.5 inches) after Jaguar has extended the distance between the two axles by 3.9 inches (100mm). In contrast, the standard XF’s wheelbase is longer by an inch or 25mm. With this additional measurement, the new XEL offers more legroom than the XE with at least an extra 4.4 inches (112mm) as well as an additional knee space of 3.9 inches (100mm) on the rear seats.

Automakers typically release teasers online before any new vehicle’s live debut. After the previews of the Mazda6 and the BMW X3, it’s now Lexus that has shared images of its three-row RXL SUV that will soon make its way to US soil. There’s no doubt about it. This Lexus RXL is the longer Lexus car that we have all been waiting for.

It has been a while since we first heard rumours about a larger and more luxurious Lexus RX, and finally, we will see the extended SUV at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. Both models, namely the RX 350L and RX 450hL, were both teased in a duo of images. However, these images don’t give us a lot of information when it comes to its final look.

Before today, the Lexus was already rumoured to appear in its hometown during the Tokyo Motor Show. But that never came to pass and it seems like they would rather bring the new SUV to North America. Similar to the current RX, sources say that the new RX 350L will ride on the same platform as today’s RX, but with a little increase in rear overhang.

Jaguar has just released the first official image of its newest offering, the new Jaguar XEL. Essentially the long-wheelbase version of the Jaguar XE compact sedan, the new Jaguar XEL is designed to offer a more spacious interior and is targeted only towards the large auto market in China.

Customers in China are known to prefer premium vehicles, especially ones that offer a spacious rear cabin. This is primarily because more Chinese customers like to be chauffeured, instead of being behind the steering. Because of this, vehicles offering more than ample legroom in the rear cabin are heavily desired by Chinese customers. To this end, carmakers are incessant in offering lengthy vehicles or long-wheelbase versions of their current models. Jaguar has already joined the long list of carmakers trying to get a chunk of the humongous auto market in China. Just last year, Jaguar launched the long-wheelbase version of the XF – the XFL – in the country. Now, the British carmaker officially revealed the looks of the new Jaguar XEL.

Overall, the Jaguar XEL basically looks like the Jaguar XE, except for some tweaks on the dimensions of a number of its parts to accommodate the longer wheelbase. Underpinned supposedly by the new JLR modular vehicle architecture that also underpins the Jaguar XE and XF, the new Jaguar XEL also features a coupe-like profile and a dynamic cab-rearward stance. It has the same dynamic sculpted hood and signature J-Blade daytime running lights as the XE.

What can we expect from Mercedes-Benz for this year and the next? It seems all matters have been laid out with luxury carmaker’s vehicle lineup for 2017 and 2018. As revealed by parent Daimler AG in its second-quarter interim report, a roadmap for the Mercedes’ product offensive includes interesting new vehicles up for release in 2018.

The road map included in Daimler’s second-quarter 2017 interim report details Mercedes’ product offensive starting 2017 through next year. Some of these products were already presented or are set to be introduced in the period January to September 2017 -- such the E-Class Coupe and the E-Class (March 2017), GLA facelift and AMG GT Roadster (April 2017), S-Class Facelift (July 2017) and the E-Class Cabriolet (September 2017). The remaining product to be introduced in the remaining months of 2017 is the Mercedes X-Class pickup truck, which is bound for release in November or December 2017, according to this product offensive roadmap.

Mercedes’ product offensive in 2018 will be headlined by the S-Class Coupe Facelift and the S-Class Cabriolet Facelift, both of which were recently unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Bound to arrive in the first months of 2018, the S-Class Coupe facelift and the S-Class Cabriolet facelift features -- more or less -- the same tweaks made on the 2018 S-Class Saloon facelift that was introduced in July 2017. These include new steering wheels and new OLED rear lamps.

A lot of people would consider the 2018 Lincoln Navigator an SUV large enough to fit seven passengers comfortably, and still having a lot of cargo space. But not everybody has the same standards, and some may still find it small for some odd reason. Well, if you are one of those people, then worry no more. Ford's luxury marque just announced that they have prepared what they call an "extended" version of the luxury SUV.

To be more specific, the Extended-lenght Lincoln Navigator will be almost one foot longer than the regular version. That’s 30 centimeters longer, meaning that there will be even more space for the passengers.

The extended Navigator offers a segment-leading cargo volume behind the second row seats, which the company is indeed proud of. An additional 15 cubic feet of cargo has been added behind the third row seats. And as I have mentioned earlier, the longer the vehicle, the more legroom there will be for the passengers. That’s because of its wheelbase that has been extended by almost 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) more than the standard version. But the good news doesn't end there, this version also has elongated rear doors which makes getting in and out of the car easier.

The upcoming 2017 Shanghai Auto Show will be the first venue for the newest member of BMW’s Chinese lineup – the new long-wheelbase 5 Series Li. This premium sedan will be exclusively available in the People’s Republic for the meantime.

Compared to the standard 5 Series (G30), the 5 Series Li (G30) is longer by 5.2 inches (13.3 centimeters) but slightly shorter compared to the 7 Series. It exudes a business-like aura while elegantly showing off the harmonious blend of its stretched proportions and contemporary looks. The increase in its length allows more space, thus, there’s additional leg room for the passengers at the back.

Aside from a more spacious leg room, the 5 Series Li also boasts optimized soundproofing as well as a variety of innovative features which include electrically adjustable comfort seats, Ambient Air package and Sky Lounge Panorama glass roof. These features further elevate the 5 Series Li to a whole new level of comfort for back seat passengers.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is considered by many as the most successful SUV to come out of Germany. It is estimated that about half a million customers have chosen the Tiguan, which comes in either the all-wheel drive version or the front-wheel drive variety. Despite releasing the second generation model last year, Volkswagen is pushing out another version -- the Tiguan Allspace.

While this variant will be part of Volkswagen’s display during the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, it will not be the first time for customers to see this SUV. Indeed, it has been showcased not only in North America but also in China. However, this will be the first time it will be shown in Europe.

For many SUV customers, the main consideration is space and the Allspace does not disappoint. In fact, it has an overall length of 4,701 mm (an increase of 215 mm). In addition, the wheelbase is now 2,790 mm instead of the standard 2,681 mm, an addition of 190 mm. While this means that it is still shorter than the Touareg, the change in dimensions is enough to satisfy many SUV customers. As such, five passengers can sit in comfort inside and with the extra room, additional seats can be installed to increase the count to seven.

If you’re someone who likes to be chauffeured but loves sports cars nonetheless, then you might want to consider the long wheelbase version of the Panamera – the 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive. It offers the same level sportiness and dynamism as a typical Panamera, but provides rear passengers with a lot of room to comfortably settle themselves in, thanks to the long wheelbase. Of course, it doesn’t come cheap, as it boasts of a starting price of $160,000, excluding delivery, processing and handling charges amounting to $1,050.

So, what do customers get for such a price? First off, this version of the Panamera offers larger interior space especially for rear passengers, thanks to the fact that its wheelbase (122.0 inches) measures around 5.9 inches longer than a typical Panamera. In terms of dimensions, the Panamera Turbo Executive measures 204.7 inches in length, 85.2 inches in width, and 56.4 inches in height.

At its core is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that provides 550 hp of max output and 567 lb.-ft. of peak torque, giving the 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive the ability to jump from zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 190 mph. When the Sport Chrono Package is availed, the 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo Executive could launch itself from nil to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. This V8 engine is mated to an eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission that comes with manual actuation and automatic mode.

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the new 2018 Tiguan long-wheelsbase during the 2017 North American International Auto Show held in Detroit. This model marks a big step for the brand especially in the U.S. market.

The reason is that this model was developed by engineers at the brand, keeping American customers in mind. This means that it has the fun to drive quality of the present Tiguan but with an interior that offers more space and sophistication. There is also a host of new driver assistance technologies plus advanced infotainment and even flexible seating.

The Tiguan utilizes the brand’s very own Modular Transverse Matrix, or MQB, platform much like the Atlas. As already mentioned, the 2018 Tiguan has more space than the present version as it is longer by 10.7 inches with overall length at 185.2 inches.

Though Mercedes-Benz has yet to release the new generation of the G-Class, there have been a number of photos going around showing what it could look like.

However it appears that a photo is now making rounds which give us a first look at this latest offering that appears to have a long wheelbase. This means that when compared to the current version, the new generation will have a stretched out look. In addition to having a longer wheelbase, the new chassis fitted to it is lower by around 440 lbs. (200 kg), making it lighter compared to the present version. It is also wider by 4 in. (10 cm).

The test mule shows that on the front end, many of the features continue to follow what have been previously seen. One minor change though appears to be the use of a single-bar grille rather that the open design or the three-slat version already revealed. Still, the long wheelbase means that there is a high possibility that the back will offer additional room. This is assuming of course that no spare wheel is placed on this end. No other details have been revealed as the way the brand managed to cover this test mule is more than effective. It made it difficult to see if any changes have been made on the tail.

Volkswagen has revealed that a new version of its Tiguan SUV will have its official debut during the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) to be held in Detroit this coming January 2017. Specifically, this variant of the Tiguan is expected to showcase a much longer wheelbase.

Dubbed as the Tiguan L or Allspace, the wheelbase is now longer by as much as 4.3 inches (11 cm) giving it overall length of around 181 inches (460 cm). With this new length plus the overhang in the rear made longer as well, it gives the Tiguan Allspace a bigger body. As such, it allows for an additional space to put in a new pair of seats and thus increase total passenger count to a maximum of seven. However like those of its competitors, for instance the Land Rover Discovery Sport, there is a high possibility that the new third-row seats will only appropriate fgor children.

In terms of design, an early look has revealed that compared to the previous version, the new model has a roofline that is flatter with the rear doors now longer. However there are still similarities like the rear section and even how the B-pillar also has the same forward style. This is because the XL Tiguan utilizes the same modular MQB chassis of the smaller version.

Porsche probably felt out of place after Volvo, Audi and BMW whipped out their own version of limos. As we know by now, Volvo’s S90 comes with an extended wheelbase as with BMW’s 7 Series and Audi’s A8 L. Because of this, Porsche will produce a more spacious Panamera similar to the Executive version’s first gen model. It goes without saying how a stretched out Porsche Panamera serves more legroom especially to those who are seated at the rear.

The new standard Panamera model comes with the 2,950 mm wheelbase, which is basically 30mm longer than its older version. However, the Panamera Executive will receive an additional 150mm totaling 3,100 mm. This measurement is virtually the same as the last model that came out of the Executive segment.

Its cabin features an optional larger centre console with a retractable set of tables. A highly impressive entertainment system includes a pair of 10.1 inch touch screen mounted on the backrests of the front seats. The luxurious rear cabin’s entertainment screen can be taken and used outside the vehicle.

Sales of the Volvo S60L in the United States are expected to reach at least 5,000 units annually. Volvo will start selling the long-wheelbase version of the S60 in the second half of 2015. Alain Visser, senior vice president of marketing, sales and customer service at Volvo, remarked that the potential of the S60L in the US is “very significant,” since although its wheelbase is 3.2 inches longer than that of the S60, it does not look like an extended-wheelbase car.

Visser added that the S60L can be a key player for Volvo. While the S60L is built only in China, Visser said key dealers and customers in the US were “enthusiastic” about it. According to Volvo Car Group chief executive Hakan Samuelsson, the S60L will be positioned as “an executive car,” with more features and options.

The S60, on the other hand, will be positioned as the sportier model. He remarked that the Volvo will save lots of money by building and importing the S60L from China since its plants is not a joint venture, as the carmaker is owned by a Chinese company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.

Infiniti gave the long-wheelbase version of the Q70 – the Q70L – just a $1,500 premium against the base variant of flagship sedan as part of its bid to attract buyers for it ($52,255 vs $50,755, including shipping). The more powered 5.6-liter V-8 version of the Q70L is just $1,700 pricier than its Q70 counterpart.

Michael Bartsch, vice president of Infiniti Americas, remarked that the pricing strategy will provide customers a compelling reason to shift up to the Q70L. Infiniti created the Q70L due to demand from its dealers retailers in China, where long-wheelbase vehicles are popular.

Infiniti logged a 17-percent drop in sales of the Q70 in the United States in the first eight months of 2014 to 3,171 units, Both the Q70 and the Q70L now features Infiniti's premium package -- includes leather seating, heated steering wheel, voice-recognition navigation and premium audio -- at no extra charge.
