Next-generation Toyota Supra offers 400+hp V6 turbo engine and a manual transmission

Toyota has been silently preparing for the eventual comeback of the Toyota Supra sports car for some time now. Because of this silence, it has been left to discerning fans and enthusiasts as well as potential customers to dig further into the details about the next generation of the Supra. Just recently, some juicy details sprouted in a certain online forum about the upcoming Supra.

These details were divulged to forum member Canyonero by a certain Toyota representative who goes by the name of Dave. It turned out that Canyonero had dinner with Dave, and that was when the Toyota rep started spilling the beans.

The information about the next generation Supra was rather short, but it already tells a lot. According to Canyonero, Dave said that Toyota will commence sales of the new Supra sports car in early 2019. Power would be sourced from an engine jointly developed by Toyota and BMW.

BMW documents suggest that there will not be a manual Toyota Supra

Earlier this week, some internal documents from BMW have been leaked. And naturally, car enthusiasts would be curious to know what juicy details they would find in these files. So what has been revealed are some info on the models that will replace the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra’s future successor.

The 177-page long document suggest it to be a list of the German automaker’s designation for cars and motorcycles. This also includes details of BMW’s partners including Rolls Royce, Land Rover, and Toyota. We do not know whether the document is original or a fraud, but a spokesperson of BMW Australia refused to comment when asked regarding its authenticity.

The documents confirm that the Supra will only be available in automatic transmission. This is not fresh news regarding the Japanese sports coupe, but what’s new is the fact that the company will not be giving it a manual transmission at all. United States customers will only be getting two engine options for the Supra which are: the four-cylinder unit with 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and the 335 horsepower (250 kilowatts) six-cylinder unit. Luckily, European customers will get another option that is the four-cylinder unit. The automatic gearbox will give power to the rear wheels only.

2017 Honda Civic Type R gets exclusive 6-speed manual transmission, no automatic option

Not only is the 2017 Honda Civic Type R new in the North American market, it recently got labelled the fastest car with a front-wheel drive setup at the Green Hell. Now, the Civic Type R will exclusively be given a six-speed manual transmission, just because an automatic gearbox would make the car weigh too much.

This was explained by the company during an interview between Yuji Matsumochi, Assistant Large Project Leader of the Civic Powertrain, and Australian publication Car Advice. So the Civic will come standard with the manual, with no option to get an automatic variant. This is because the Type R now weighs at 62.5 percent to 37.5 (that's front to rear axle). So a dual-clutch transmission will only make it much heavier, with its 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), which will definitely affect the car's performance.

Matsumochi explained that a front wheel drive will naturally need a lighter powertrain, and since the Type R already has a heavier engine, it will only work with a lightweight transmission. Thus, only the manual will work.

BMW: Time to say goodbye to manual and dual-clutch gearboxes

The BMW M model, as of today, offers their buyers two transmission options: either a six-speed manual or a seven speed dual-clutch automatic. But rumours have been circulating that these models will be the last few of its kind. Don’t worry though, the BMW M model will not be abandoned, but just the transmission options they are currently offering.

In fact, Peter Quintus, vice-president of sales and marketing of the said model supported the rumours regarding the manuals and DCTs when asked about transmissions as he stated “It’s more of a question of how long has the DCT got to go, how long will it last?” in an interview with Australian magazine The Drive. From what we know, this only applies to the M models, since he did not specify.

According to Quintus, what concerns them the most is the durability of the three-pedal and DCT options in the M portfolio. Specifically, the manual can only hold up to 450 horsepower (335 kilowatts) and 443 pound feet (600 Newton-metres) of torque. If power goes past that, then durability and longevity cannot be promised.

And so, the highest EPA-estimated fuel returns for the highway goes to Chevrolet! Looking back, Reuss of General Motors has said before that the latest Chevrolet Cruze could get an EPA rating that begins with a 5. Apparently, he’s right after the Cruze manual diesel’s official EPA figures show an average highway consumption of up to 52 mpg. Indeed, it is the highest fuel economy ever achieved on any non-EV and non-hybrid vehicle in the US.

This comes as positive news especially after the dieselgate scandal that has tainted the image of all diesel-powered engines. Everything else is water under the bridge so to speak. Volkswagen has clearly gotten rid of its Jetta Diesel and Golf Diesel models. Having said that, the Cruze is still behind most of the two-gas electric hybrids and plugin- EVs when it comes to the US pollution standards. On highway driving, the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid boasts up to 59 miles per gallon while the Toyota Prius Eco can give as much as 53 mpg.

Since the Chevy Cruze’s diesel manual variant is also mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the results also show a combined fuel consumption of up to 37mpg. Based on the EPA test, the result shows at least 30mpg for city driving. On the same note, the other model with 9-speed automatic gearbox has virtually the same fuel consumption--- with 31mpg for the city and 47mpg for the high way.

A manual transmission arguably brings more excitement to the person behind the wheel. Here’s some good news to those who have been waiting for Audi to release the latest word on the A5 and S5 coupes. Much to our surprise, the Audi A5 is not the only Audi model that will have the six-speed manual sticks. The two-door coupe (A5) and the four-door variant (A4) will both come with manual transmission. If there’s more, these two different variants will also be sharing the same type of engine.

The new S5 model will have the powerful 354 hp engine and is capable of producing up to 369 pound feet of torque. Expect the two Audis to come with larger wheel arches, bolder shoulders and more distinctive outlines. Also, both the S5 and A5 models will be receiving a much wider grille design.

It goes without saying that the new A5 will also arrive in the US. The same model will feature the 252hp, 273lb-ft of torque turbocharged engine in four cylinders. Both 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual clutch transmissions are included in the new line-up.

Furthermore, the control harmony, friction surfaces, and component strength were all modified and checked to offer the most engaging driving experience. Included in the manual transmission is an engine management software that instantly and smoothly matches engine speeds in each downshift in the EFFICIENT and SPORT modes of operation. This feature is cancelled by switching the engine mode to SPORT+, requiring the driver to synchronize downshifts with the use of the accelerator pedal for the highest level of involvement.

Although sports car manufacturers such as Lamborghini are planning to ditch the manual gearboxes it appears that Jaguar wants to go back to its roots as the British manufacturer now owned by Tata Motors is planning to reintroduce manual gearboxes.

Still, Autocar says that we will see them within a year. Adrian Hallmark a.k.a. Jaguar’s global brand director admits that the manual gearboxes have “cost and fun” benefits.

The first car expected to get the manual gearbox is the Jaguar F-Type but the manufacturer is expected to offer it on saloons such as the XF. “Sports cars need a manual transmission for sports credibility,” said Hallmark.

The next-generation BMW M5 or M6 will get double-clutch transmissions, disappointing those who prefer the manual transmissions. Albert Biermann, the head of engineering, admitted that they are not planning to accommodate three pedals in the next M6 and M5 since there had been far too low orders to justify the additional work.

Biermann gave warnings that last year, the number of manuals sold has been declining. In 2011, around 15-20% of its M5s used a stick but it’s likely to just be 15% this year. He said that the issue is that there isn’t a high demand for the manual version in Europe or even in other regions so this would probably be the last time that the company will offer it in the U.S. or elsewhere.

The six-speed manual transmission of the M5 had been massively revised from its 5 Series origins and sells beside the seven-speed double-clutch unit in the U.S. as a no-cost option. In addition, the gearbox won’t be a no-cost option on the upcoming M6 Coupe and Convertible.
