The fourth generation of the world’s best-selling two-seat sports car, the Mazda MX-5, was launched to the global market two years ago as the 2016 Mazda MX-5 (ND). But this early in its life cycle, the convertible sports car also known as the Miata is already getting a number of updates, as announced by Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).
The 2018 Mazda Miata will still be available in three trim levels: the entry-level MX-5 Sport, the hardcore MX-5 Club and the most sophisticated of the trio, the MX-5 Grand Touring. For the 2018 model year, the three trim levels will boast of a number of design, performance and functional updates.
Design updates for the 2018 Mazda MX-5 include the availability of a new Dark Cherry and a Black soft top. Likewise, Mazda is adding new color finishes for the exterior palette of the new 2018 MX-5, such as Eternal Blue Mica, Snowflake White Peal Mica and Soul Red Crystal. Mazda MX-5 customers may also avail of the Machine Gray Metallic finish, which was previously exclusive available on MX-5 RF retractable fastback models. Do you remember the Mazda MX-5 Miata? Perhaps not if you are a millennial reading this. That’s because it is a car from almost 3 decades ago. The older a car gets, the more signs of age you will notice, no matter how often you maintain it or how sparsely you use it. The MX-5 Miata, also known as the NA generation, is facing that issue now, and owners of this model are not ready to give up their cars yet. This is why Mazda is starting a restoration program for the car.
Mazda came up with this solution as they kept hearing from MX-5 Miata owners that they cannot let go of their cars, and that they want to keep on driving them, no matter how old the car gets. A lot of Miata owners also requested for Mazda to produce parts of the 28-year-old model.
Now, their prayers have been answered and Mazda will start accepting customer cars by early 2018 to restore them to their original shape. The restoration process will vary from one car to another, depending on the customer’s requests. The company will ask their clients what they want to get out of their Miata exactly, before working on the car. But first, Mazda plans to get a certification from German inspection group TÜV Rheinland Japan Co., Ltd so that they could produce high-quality vehicles.Read the entire article Mazda Japan opens restoration service for 1st-gen decades-old MX-5 Miata

Alfa Romeo was supposed to receive a roadster from Mazda at the start of 2015; but the chief executive of parent Fiat thinks otherwise. Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told the Financial Times in September 2013 they would not build Alfa models outside of Italy as long as he holds the top position, which lasts until at least 2017. Marchionne repeated his statement at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
He remarked that further details about future Fiat Group products would be revealed in early May. Fiat and Mazda product planners are intending to meet soon to talk about the potential badge change for the MX-5-based two-seat car, the sources said, adding that the Italian carmaker’s product planners are looking for ways to fulfill the terms of their supply contract with the Japanese group since walking away from the deal would be extremely costly.
The question now is which brand would receive the roadster from Mazda. Fiat's near-premium brand Lancia could not be considered as Marchionne has already elected to reduce the marque to a one-model brand, the Ypsilon.Read the entire article Alfa Romeo is unlikely to get new roadster from Mazda
While Mazda and Fiat are finalizing a deal to collaborate on producing roadsters, the carmakers are also looking to work on other possible joint projects, Mazda chief executive Takashi Yamanouchi said at the Los Angeles auto show. According to Yamanouchi, engineers from Mazda and Fiat are drawing up an "opportunity list" of potential vehicle projects.
He, however, declined to name the projects under consideration. During the Paris auto show in September, Yamanouchi disclosed that Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne expressed its intention to expand their partnership, which involves jointly developing roadsters to be the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata and Alfa Romeo Spider. Yamanouchi said that engineers from both carmakers are meeting with each other, which can lead to new possibilities.
According to Yamanouchi, he and Marchionne agreed to finalize the roadster deal by the end of 2012, adding "that there are no major issues at this point." However, a broad alliance or equity sharing deal is not a possibility as Mazda has made clear its intention to remain independent. The roadster deal is currently governed by a memorandum of understanding.Read the entire article Mazda and Fiat looking for other joint projects aside from roadster deal

A smaller and lighter Mazda MX-5 - that's what the next model will be like. According to Mazda insiders, this is an attempt to replicate the spirit of the original launched 20 years ago.
Mazda's R&D team is working on making the new car as light and compact as the first MX-5. The current car was deemed to be too heavy. With a 2.0-liter engine, its kerb weight is 1,098 kg, compared with the original's 970 kg. The target is 1,000 kg.
This change would give the new car a figure similar to that of the recent 980kg MX-5 Superlight concept, which was the first of a series of design studies that will indicate the direction Mazda will take with the new car. To take off the weight, the carmaker will likely install a smaller and lighter engine, which is believed to copy the original's 1.6-liter capacity.Read the entire article Next Mazda MX-5 will be smaller and lighter
