Every year, Mazda gives their cars upgrades in small increments, and customers definitely appreciate the changes that the Mazda3 has gotten. This year, according to Motoring, the company is stepping up its game in terms of combustion engine efficiency with the new powerplant they are releasing - with homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI). This will be launched in August at a technology conference that will take place in Frankfurt.
HCCI is a gas-powered engine that works like a diesel mill. It compresses the mixture of air and fuel in the cylinder until combustion. Apparently, the Mazda engine (a Skyactiv II engine) will use spark plugs at lower speeds, but when the car goes faster, the powerplant will switch to HCCI.
The company further added that the Skyactiv II engine is going to be more efficient by 30 percent compared to current gasoline-fueled engines. We have all heard of Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X engine technology, even if it has not gone on sale yet. And despite that, the Japanese automaker has already begun a new major internal combustion project, which they are calling the Skyactiv 3. What they plan for this is to boost the powerplant’s thermal efficient to around 56 percent, and this will deliver a well to wheel emissions on par with an EV, says Automotive News.
This claim by Mazda was made based on the carbon dioxide emissions from producing electricity for charging an electric vehicle versus pumping oil out of the ground to turn this into gasoline.
However, the main issue with this calculation is that there are a number of ways to produce electricity, and each way produces a different amount of carbon dioxide. During the recent 2018 Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG revealed to us the new CLS53 and E53. Both of these were equipped with the same 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged inline six engine, with a light electrification system that the automaker refers to as the EQ Boost. This motor, according to Road & Track, will likely find its way into other future models.
The V6 engines will soon be phased out. This is being implemented so that the automaker can prioritize Mercedes-Benz’s straight six engines, referring primarily to the M256 motor. Ola Källenius, Mercedes Benz’s Research and Development, said that this change has to do with the emergence of four cylinder engines.
Källenius said that currently, four-cylinder engines are considered to be the most dominating engine formula for the world, and it just makes sense to add the straight six engines into that. In the United States, diesel engines were never really that big. Sales of cars with diesel engines were even more dismal. And if there is one type of vehicle where diesel has had the most success, it would be the pickup trucks. Clearly, there are disadvantages to offering diesel variants. Mercedes-Benz has decided to scrap its plan to offer it in its lineup. In fact, the only model it has that still has this engine is its Sprinter van. The very first time we ever saw Bentley’s SUV, the Bentayga, was back in September 2015 when it came out with the impressive W12 engine. A year after that, it shifted to a different powertrain, which was the Audi SQ7’s biturbo 4.0 liter V8 TDI for the diesel powered engine. Today, it decides to spice up their range even more by coming up with a V8 version, but this time with a 4.0 liter gasoline engine that works with a pair of turbochargers.
The new powertrain produces as much as 542 horsepower (404 kilowatts) and 568 pound-feet (770 Newton-metres) of torque, which is the same as the Cayenne Turbo and the Porsche Panamera. Ford Motor Co. revealed that it will be offering a new Power Stroke 3.0-liter V6 engine for its F-150 trucks. With this addition, customers now have a total of six choices for the engine of the F-150.

Mercedes-Benz will attempt to achieve what you never thought would go together in a vehicle - a gasoline engine that has low fuel consumption like that of a diesel. This four-cylinder engine has been turbocharged and promises to have an output of 299 horsepower (220 kilowatts) from 5,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-metres) from 3,000 rpm.
What makes it different from any other four-cylinder 2.0 liter mill is the fact that it has been tweaked, and a 48 V starter-alternator and an electric 48 V water pump have been added. For many years, Lamborghini has always relied on the use of large and powerful engines including the V10 and the V12. To go along with its phenomenal comeback, Wiesmann Sports Cars GmbH has inked a deal with BMW AG to supply its engines. The announcement came from a brief press release regarding the agreement on the new product development and supply between the two companies. After all, Wiesmann sports cars have been using BMW M division’s motors all the way back since 1993.
The company was originally established by brothers Friedhelm and Martin Wiesmann in the 1980s. However, it was only after Wiesmann introduced the MF30 in 1993 that it became famous.
The final edition from the original Wiesmann was the GT MF4-CS which was built to commemorate the sports car company’s 25th year anniversary. Bloomberg recently published a report regarding the banning of vehicles with internal combustion engines in California. Air Resources chairman of the board Mary Nichols said state officials have already stated their interest in putting an end to the sales of pollution-causing automobiles in a bid for cleaner air.
California is considered amongst the most environmentally-aware states, accounting for over 2 million of car sales, in the entire US in the previous year. Following the recent announcements made by other countries, Nichols went on by saying that Governor Jerry Brown had been sending messages concerning his thoughts on the issue. Brown is in fact one of the most plain-spoken US officials who has expressed strong interest in combating climate change.
If ICE vehicles are to be banned in California, Nichols thinks the current administration will not approve of it if done via an EPA waiver. That, in spite it is legal for them to do so. Nichols added it is more feasible by imposing new vehicle registration guidelines instead. BMW’s pure M and M-performance are currently being offered with six- and eight-cylinder turbocharged engines. But while German premium rival Mercedes-Benz offers – through its AMG division – a line of performance models (with 45 badge) powered by four-cylinder mills, BMW is adamant in not pursuing such power options unless some issues are addressed promptly and properly.
BMW isn't likely to employ four-cylinder engine due to power concerns, this was disclosed to the media by Frank Van Meel, chief executive of BMW’s high M Division. According to Van Meel, BMW and BMW W have been happy with its six-cylinder engines because they consider this mill as their heritage engine. He noted that six-cylinder engines have a long history with BMW, since it was the mill that first powered the M1, and that was in 1978. He also noted that a six-cylinder is an iconic engine, and BMW is a six-cylinder inline company.
As for a four-cylinder engine powering an M car, Van Meel shrugs off such possibility. He remarked that four-cylinder engines don’t have the characteristics or attributes necessary for an M car, even if it is a turbocharged four-cylinder mill. Van Meel has a valid point here, since four-cylinder engines – even those boosted by turbochargers don’t develop enough torque at low engine revs, which should affect performance especially during standstill accelerations.
