Successor to McLaren 650S sports car to be named 720S

It seems that McLaren is now nearing the final phases of its development and testing of the replacement vehicle the McLaren 650S, with the new sports car to be released for the 2018 model year. There have been spy photos of the prototype being tested, and some of these images even showed the hopefully final looks of the McLaren 650S replacement.

For now, we still don’t know the official name of the new McLaren sports car. All we know is that the successor to the McLaren 650S has an internal codename of P14. Of course, this codename won’t stick though, and there are speculations that McLaren would be officially unveiling the final form of the P14 at the upcoming 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. If McLaren’s naming protocol is followed, then the P14 would officially don the name McLaren 720S.

The McLaren 650S -- available as a Coupe or as a Spider – is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 650 hp (485 kW) of max output at 7,250 rpm and 678 Nm of peak torque available at 6,000 rpm. Its coupe version employs a seven-speed DSG transmission, allowing it to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds; from nil to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 8.4 seconds; and from standstill to 300 km/h (186 mph) in 25.4 seconds. In addition, it could go as fast as 333 km/h (207 mph).

By itself, the McLaren 650S already delivers excellence both in performance and visuals. However for Japan-based Liberty Walk, it appears that the 650S has yet to show its true potential. This is the reason why the tuner has once again revealed another upgrade package for this amazing model.

This latest body kit puts in fenders that are now wider with a new diffuser in the rear and bumper in the front. All of these are then decorated with red highlights. New as well are the ultra-wide rims and the large wing.

Liberty Walk did not stop there as this upgrade package will come in two versions. The first is priced at $34,000, and will have the upgrades in fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP). The second is pricier at $42,380, and has the body parts in carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plus the addition of a dry carbon wing.

Back in March, McLaren unveiled the 650S Coupe and Spider, the models that replace the 12C Coupe and Spider. Just like it did with the 12C, McLaren Special Operations decided to upgrade the recently introduced 650S. As a result, the first images with the new MSO 650S Coupe Concept were released today and as expected, the vehicle showcases the MSO-designed engineered upgrades available for the McLaren 650S Coupe and 650S Spider.

As you can see from the photos, the MSO 650S Coupe Concept comes with plenty of bespoke MSO features such as a newly designed carbon fibre rear diffuser and MSO-branded carbon fibre side blades. The vehicle is finished in Agrigan Black, a metallic black paint developed in-house with a deep ruby red metallic flake.

As expected, the paint shows a colour change in direct sunlight and it is complemented by the carbon fiber highlights, such as the prominent front splitter and air intakes, as well as MSO carbon fibre side blades and the unique MSO rear diffuser. Comparing them with those found on the standard model, the MSO side blades are a more aggressive, full length, interpretation of the door blades seen on the 650S Coupe and Spider models.

The McLaren 12C (formerly known as the MP4-12C) has been on the market for a while now, as it was unveiled in September 2009 and went on sale in mid-2011. Back in March, McLaren launched the 650S Coupe and Spider, a vehicle that featured a front end inspired by the awesome P1 hypercar, while the rear end was “borrowed” from the 12C.

And the inevitable happened as McLaren announced the existing owners of the 12C that the company will cease production of 12C in light of the success of the 650S. Still, this isn’t the end o the 12C because Mclaren is offering the current owners a free Technology Upgrade program. Available from June, this program will offer a new Active Aero software for the Airbrake that will make it ‘sense’ different driving scenarios.

According to McLaren, the software will improve stability when lifting off the throttle or cresting a hill. Moreover, the program will include a DRS (Drag Reduction System) mode which lowers the wing when driving at high speeds in a straight line, in order to improve aerodynamics.
