McLaren GT introduced today a new high performance variant of the 12C, the 12C GT Sprint a.k.a. a track-only variant of the MP4-12C. The new models a new high performance variant of the 12C and the all-out racing 12C GT3 and 12C GT Can-Am Edition models. The PCC suspension has been recalibrated in order to suit the cars lower ride height and racing slick tyres. Two McLaren MP4-12C GT3 cars successfully completed the 2012 Total 24 Hours of Spa, braving the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit on harsh weather conditions. McLaren GT customer teams competing at the main event of the Blancpain Endurance Series fielded nine examples of the MP4-12C GT3, all of which performed well until severe conditions forced seven units to retire before completing the event.
The #88 MP4-12C GT3, run by Von Ryan Racing and driven by Alvaro Parente, Rob Barff, Roger Wills and Chris Goodwin, was P9 overall while finishing an impressive fourth in the Pro-Am class. The #66 blue-and-black MP4-12C GT3, also run by Von Ryan Racing but driven by Julian Draper, Matt Draper, Stephen Jelley and Stef Dusseldorp finished the race after 24 hours at P30 place overall.
Each of the nine participating MP4-12C GT3s showed a solid performance throughout the qualifying sessions, with five cars in the top 20 for the start of the race. Under the new McLaren MP4-12C GT3’s development program, three vehicles were entered into the Total 24 Hours of Spa on July 30 to 31, 2011. McLaren GT did well in its debut 24-hour endurance race and boasts the successful integration of a future McLaren GT customer into the team at Spa, the impressive lap times, as well as the safety of McLaren GT Project Manager and driver Andrew Kirkaldy after a high-speed incident.

The new GT3 car from McLaren has made its global debut at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is the first car that the company built for racing outside of Formula 1 ever since the McLaren F1 GTR. Based on McLaren’s MP4-12C high-performance road car, the new GT3 car received revisions as it underwent a brief intense period of development.
New parts that are meant to optimize the car’s aerodynamic performance include a front radiator, which extends the maximum ambient temperature at which the car can operate. It also features a new gearbox cooler on the rear Aerodeck.
The model has an aerodynamics package that consists of a new front splitter, door blade, rear wing, diffuser and louvers in the front fenders. McLaren unveiled its GT3 car at the same time as revealing plans related to its 2011 team and development program for the Total 24 Hours of Spa endurance race. The GT3 is based on the new MP4-12C high-performance sports car and it is powered by the same 3.8l McLaren V8 twin turbo ‘M838T’ engine that’s only de-tuned to 500 PS (from 600 PS).
The new MP4-12C GT3 will get a one-of-a-kind engine calibration, bespoke racing transmission that was made in partnership with Ricardo (who was a co-developer of the engine) and a suspension arrangement made for racing.
The initial demand for the first 20 McLaren MP4-12C GT3s is quite high. There are about 20 more GT3s that will be produced through 2013 and 2014. McLaren has released the first images and results of the tests conducted on the MP4-12C GT3 car. It was back in October last year when Volkswagen began teasing us about the fully electric Pikes Peak racer, and last month, they showed us fully revealing images of the model. Now finally, VW has opened up and is ready to talk about the model’s technical specs.
