Mulgari Automotive offers exclusive tuning kit for McLaren MP4-12C

In the automotive scene full of custom projects and bespoke vehicle programs, several aftermarket specialists are now starting to think differently. Enter Mulgari Automotive, the British tuner that offers a unique customization package known as “Signature Vehicles” in which prospective clients were given access via exclusive invite.

Mulgari’s visual enhancement package for the Signature Vehicle range gives its customers a unique new experience of owning their brand new purchase. The program focuses on the client’s personal specifications including interior, performance and cosmetic upgrades that are only available exclusively from the company.

Its latest “Project Twelve” concept or the Mclaren MP4-12C challenges various norms related to customization as it took them eight months to finally complete the whole new set-up. The tuning kit features revised side skirts, new front bumpers, rear bumpers and new carbon fiber diffuser built to their special standards. Likewise, Mulgari has modified the sports car’s 3.8-liter biturbo V8 for it to develop an additional 40 horsepower than the standard 600hp. For them to achieve this, the team tweaked the McLaren MP4-12C’s onboard electronics as well as the ventilation system.

McLaren ceases 12C production but offers free Technology Upgrade program

The McLaren 12C (formerly known as the MP4-12C) has been on the market for a while now, as it was unveiled in September 2009 and went on sale in mid-2011. Back in March, McLaren launched the 650S Coupe and Spider, a vehicle that featured a front end inspired by the awesome P1 hypercar, while the rear end was “borrowed” from the 12C.

And the inevitable happened as McLaren announced the existing owners of the 12C that the company will cease production of 12C in light of the success of the 650S. Still, this isn’t the end o the 12C because Mclaren is offering the current owners a free Technology Upgrade program. Available from June, this program will offer a new Active Aero software for the Airbrake that will make it ‘sense’ different driving scenarios.

According to McLaren, the software will improve stability when lifting off the throttle or cresting a hill. Moreover, the program will include a DRS (Drag Reduction System) mode which lowers the wing when driving at high speeds in a straight line, in order to improve aerodynamics.

It appears that the Ferrari 458 Speciale what was unveiled back in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show made quite an impression and the news that the production of this vehicle is already sold out for this year convinced other carmakers to follow the same strategy. As a result, McLaren will offer an enhanced version of the MP4-12C that will deliver better on-road performance, exceeding that of the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

According to Autocar, McLaren declined to make any comment on this story, but an unknown source told the British magazine that the new vehicle will be based on the same carbonfibre Monocell as the 12C while the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine will be tuned to about 650 hp.

As expected, the new McLaren will have a slightly different design than the standard 12C and will take more styling influences from the range-topping McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar. Moreover, the interior will also be upgraded. Regarding the Ferrari 458 Speciale, this model is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 engine rated at 605 hp and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque.

Based on the rate at which the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book cars were sold, we know that the cool factor of the new 2013 McLaren 12C Spider is higher than a Jaguar XJL but it isn’t cooler than a Ferrari FF, a Chevrolet Camaro Convertible or a Bmw 7-Series. It took less than two hours to sell out the new McLaren.

The Ferrari FF last year sold out in 50 minutes while the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible sold out in 2010 in just three minutes. To put it into perspective, there were only 10 Ferraris offered so it’s quite impressive that 100 Camaros sold out in a ridiculously short amount of time. For this year, there were only twelve 2013 12C Spiders available. This meant that one 12C Spider was sold every 10 minutes.

Buyers of the Neiman Marcus 12C will also be some of the first Spider owners in the U.S. Neiman Marcus said that these cars are likely to arrive by Christmas, while all other 12C Spiders are scheduled to arrive around the start of 2013. McLaren was the exclusive automotive partner of the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book this year.

McLaren and Texas-based retail chain Neiman Marcus have come together to have a limited-run edition of the 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spiders available in its annual Christmas Book as part of the set of “Fantasy Gifts.”

It has several other luxurious offerings such as a Jetlev R200 jet pack ($99,500); a private dinner for 10 cooked by Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Richard Rosendale, and Jerome Bocuse ($250,000), and a walk-on role in the Broadway show Annie: The Musical ($30,000). The most expensive gift costs $1.09 million and includes a first-class trip for two to Paris and Geneva to visit the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique, atelier, and watchmaking workshops, together with his and hers watches.

The NM MP4-12C ranks second with a price tag of $354,000, which is $85,750 higher than the MP4-12C Spider’s base price. Buyers get exclusivity first of all. Only 12 samples of the special-edition Neiman Marcus cars will be built. What distinguishes the special edition NM Spider from others are its volcano red paint job, lightweight diamond-cut wheels with gloss black trim, gloss black interior and exterior graphics, contrasting red stitching, and a stainless steel special-edition number badge.
