Mercedes-Benz claims upcoming GLE PHEV will have a 100-km all-electric range

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are increasingly the mobility of choice for many people. For short drives around the city or urban areas, plug-in hybrid can be switched to all-electric mode for a zero-emission driving experience. However, current plug-in hybrids can only offer up to 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric range.

Mercedes-Benz is hoping to break the status quo by not just surpassing the 50-km barrier, but also offering up to 100 km (62 miles) in pure electric range. Quite a number of plug-in hybrids still offer 30 km of electric range, while there is an increasing number of models that are engineered to reach 50 km.

As divulged by Ola Kallenius, head of Daimler group research and Mercedes-Benz cars development, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV will be the first plug-in hybrid to offer a 100-km range, as per WLTP cycle.

Fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE is roomier and filled with lots of tech

Compared to its predecessor (2011-2019 model years), the next-gen GLE is more elegant, more intelligent, and more technological. Likewise it is more spacious, more aerodynamic and more suited to off-road adventures.

Mercedes-Benz will unveil the next-gen GLE to the global public at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris 2018, which will be held from October 4 to 14, 2018). It will arrive in the United States and Europe in early 2019 and in China in spring 2019.

Diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz G-Class will soon be available in Europe

Right now, if you check the Mercedes-Benz G Class configurator online, you will be given two options, namely the G500 and the G63. The G500 first came out in January with the launch of the W464 at NAIAS in Detroit, and the G63 made its first appearance in Geneva a few weeks after the first one. For those of you who are looking for a more low end torque, then you will need to wait until the end of the year to place an order for a diesel powered G in Europe.

If you speak to the guys behind the Mercedes-Benz Passion Blog, they will tell you that the diesel G-Class that takes the shape of the G350d 4Matic model will be available in Germany by December. At the same time, production will begin during this time but deliveries will not begin until March 2019 at the earliest. The report then says that dealers will get the first diesel models for potential clients to try out sometime in spring of next year.

You might be wondering what the original identity of the diesel engine is. Well, it is actually the OM 656 that we saw last year together with the S-Class facelift. This was eventually launched in other models like the CLS. In the S350d sedan, it pumps out 286 horsepower (210 kilowatts) and 600 Newton metres (443 pound feet) of torque. Moving on to the S400d, it has a little more output, at 340 horsepower (250 kilowatts) and 700 Newton metres (516 pound feet) of torque.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is opulence visualized in a crossover

The Maybach sub-brand has already come to characterize utmost exclusivity among luxury vehicles. Thus, if Maybach unveils an all-new concept with “ultimate luxury” as part of its moniker, it would only be dutiful to take a peek at this new study. As not to disappoint, a new concept vehicle dubbed as “Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury” has just been unveiled by the sub-brand at the Auto China 2018 in Beijing.

As its name indicates, the new Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury represents how the sub-brand views the future of ultimate luxury, as packed in a shape of a premium crossover. Measuring 5,260 mm in length, 2,110 mm in width and 1,764 mm in height, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is practically a luxurious electric car powered by four compact permanent-magnet synchronous motors for a fully variable all-wheel drive configuration.

Total output is pegged at 750 hp (550 kW), with energy derived from a flat underfloor battery with a capacity of around 80 kWh. This battery allows the concept to travel more than 500 km as per NEDC, or over 200 miles as per EPA. The study has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

As we all know, the newest Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury will be officially revealed on April 25. However, even before its actual premiere, images of the said model had already been leaked on the internet. As you can see here, the same images were posted on CarNewsChina. Take note that these are actually the official shots of the new Vision Mercedes Maybach Ultimate Luxury. Some describe this SUV as a sedan with a tall roof and a lot of ground clearance provided by the jacked up suspension.

In fact, Mercedes refers to this as an SUV saloon that will meet the requirements of affluent Chinese buyers who are vital in the success of super luxury car sales worldwide. It obviously has similarities to rival models like the Bentley Bentayga and the upcoming Rolls Royce Cullinan.

As expected, it still gets the aforementioned “bold new grille”, which doesn’t differ from the vertical slats of the facelifted Mercedes Maybach S Class and the much longer Pullman version. In the back is a retro-like split window layout. Nevertheless, we still think that the design on the previous Vision concept looks better. We’re referring to the Vision Mercedes Maybach 6 from two years ago.

When the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class was unleashed at the 2018 Detroit Motor Show, the rugged yet luxurious SUV revealed several updates both inside and outside. Since then, Mercedes-Benz has been unveiling the G-Class in different trims and packages like the Night Package and the menacing AMG Edition 1. Now, Mercedes is offering a new package laden with shiny metal accents – the new Stainless Steel Package.

Just like its name indicates, the Stainless Steel package has a number of added elements made in this material. For instance, the package adds elements to the G-Class like protective door strips, rear bumper accents, grooved rear bumper protection, running boards, sill protectors as well as spare tire carrier and three-dimensional star done in stainless steel. This package is in contrast with the Night Package that adds a number of dark details to the new G-Class.

The new G-Class is already an SUV that stands out from the crowd, but exterior packages like the AMG Edition 1, Night Package and the newly unveiled Stainless Steel Package makes the luxurious utility model more distinct than before.

While Mercedes-Benz is still gearing up to unveil the Mercedes-AMG G63 at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show this month, well-known tuner Lumma Design is already previewing a bespoke tuning program for the new AMG version of the Mercedes G-Class. This preview comes in the form of the new Widebody Lumma G-Class.

As its name indicates, the Widebody Lumma G-Class is fitted with a widebody kit, as complemented by heavy-duty alloy wheels and a number of performance upgrades. It is derived from the AMG G63, which boasts of delivering up to 585 hp of output and up to 850 Nm. While Lumma Design might not be the only tuner that would take on the new AMG G63, its extensive personalization program for the luxurious G-Class performance flagship could be very appealing to those who have extra money to spend.

The new AMG G63 performance flagship is actually a fusion of robustness, near indestructibility, passion, perfection and power. This is why Lumma chose this performance flagship as the base for the Lumma CLR G770 widebody kit. One of Lumma Design’s latest creation, the CLR G770 is composed of different parts and components made from ultra-light carbon fiber. These include carbon fiber body panels as well as a full carbon fiber bonnet that features specially designed vents. The CLR G770 kit also includes carbon fiber wheel arches that extend the width of the AMG 63 by 40mm on each side.

Right now, the G63 is probably the highest spec of the G Class that customers can buy, but Mercedes-AMG will allow you to have an even cooler G63 if you are willing to spend a little more. A few weeks ago, we witnessed the sinister looking Edition 1, and now, the Affalterbach is showing us the optional Night Package for the reputable off roader in the AMG variant.

Though the aforementioned special edition model is only available for 12 months, the Night Package is not time sensitive. In fact, it will be available for the G63 for as long as we know. As its name suggests, the package includes a number of black styling elements on the outside. The only exception here is that customers who get the car in black as a base colour cannot order this package. We do think that this makes a lot of sense because then the accents will not be noticeable.

When customers tick the “Night Package” box, the turn signals will now have a black tint, while the side mirror caps, and the outer ring of the spare wheel will also get an Obsidian Black finish. Some parts of the front and rear bumpers, and the side skirts, will be finished in black too. The rear windows will then be tinted, and black underbody protectors finish off the exterior upgrades.

It was a few weeks ago that Mercedes-Benz revealed the G-Class SUV to the public. And as early as now, they have already surprised us with the more powerful AMG version of it. It is definitely what we expected it to be - except it came earlier than we anticipated. Check out this 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. Despite its huge, boxy size, this SUV is capable of accelerating to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. That makes it almost a full second faster than its high-performance predecessor.

You are probably wondering where all this power comes from. Well, apart from the obvious, which is the ample AMG supplied power boost, the same 4.0 liter biturbo V8 has been tweaked so it can carry out 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts). That definitely sounds like a lot despite the fact that it is actually 14 horsepower (10 kilowatts) more than the G63. But aside from that, it is also because the G63 also lost a significant amount of weight, and I mean 375 pounds (174 kilograms) to be specific.

Moreover, the G63 also has a whopping 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-metres) of torque, making it 100 more than the GT R and 60 more than its predecessor. Can you just imagine this boxy G-Class SUV outrunning many hardcore sport sedans out on the streets?

We all saw the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class as it made its very first appearance weeks ago at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Though we only witnessed it very recently, the automaker confirms that we will soon be seeing more unique AMG versions of it.

Ian James, G-Wagen’s Marketing Manager said during his interview with Automotive News that the G-Class AMG is not that far away from being revealed. He also continued by saying that this will be available for the upcoming 2019 model year, which only means that we should expect to see it this year.

Because of his statement, do not be surprised if an artist from X Tomi has already begun rendering this. This G63 rendering is likely what we will see in early March before any other variant. Moreover, the automaker has also already given up a preview of what must be the more powerful AMG model, by showing off this G-Class in the AMG Line specification, finished in white. Yes, the AMG is really just a visual package for the off-roader, but it comes with a handful of upgrades. One of the main upgrades is a larger and more powerful biturbo 4.0 liter V8 engine.

With all the photos Mercedes-Benz has been posting of the new 2019 G-Class, not one of those featured the SUV in a light exterior finish, as they were all in black, or other darker shades. It’s only today that they showed off the Night Package in a brighter shade of red. And all we can say is that it looks very stunning.

You are probably wondering why the Night Package here comes with a lighter body paint. Well, that is because it refers to certain parts of the SUV that has been blackened, including the turn signals, taillights, and headlights. The cabin windows now have tinted glass as well, while the grille’s slats, vertical sections of the bumpers, side mirror housings, and the surround for the spare tire carrier at the rear will be finished in Obsidian Black.

The A-pillar accents, as well as the accents that go up the roof, have a matching look too. The 2019 G-Class with the Night Package rides on 20-inch multi spoke wheels with dark details. All these new blacked-out parts act as a perfect contrast to the red body, as you can see in the photos.

We wouldn’t disagree with Mercedes-Benz when they claim that their G-Class is a true icon in the automotive world. In fact, it has been around in its same form for almost 40 years. Besides, can you think of any other vehicle that has survived that long, with very minimal changes? All we can say is the G-Class has been proven to be timeless.

Today, the spotlight is on the 2019 G-Class. Unsurprisingly, it has the same rugged appearance as its predecessor despite the number of updates. Several new exterior updates were implemented that make the surface look smoother, with its reshaped headlights and tail lights, slimmer front blinker, and a new set of wheels. It has grown in size a little too, by 2.1 inch in length, 4.8 inch in width, and 0.3 inch in height.

But most of the new upgrades can be found inside the cabin. Passengers will now get more room inside, particularly back passengers. This has been done because the previous model had tighter accommodations for back riders. This also means more legroom for them, because the wheelbase had been extended by 1.6 inches in length. Aside from that, the rear seats had been repositioned as well. Late last year, we also talked about the G-Class’ new interior that has been made so much nicer, with the new surface that gives us the same familiarity, but with a more upscale feel.

Not many car models can get away with retaining the look for many years. In fact, the only models we could think of are the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Though the G-Class’s latest variation, the W464, is supposed to debut in mid-January, official images of the boxy vehicle have already emerged in a Chinese website.

As mentioned earlier, the G-Class is one of the oldest designs we have seen, but it could still get away with it. And true enough the W464 still retains the Mercedes’ G-Class’ exterior design, just minus the old block, which was a good move for them. For 39 years, the automaker has kept virtually the same exterior appearance for the reputable off roader. The evolutionary design just makes perfect sense given the G-Class’ heritage.

Based on the photographs we saw, we cannot tell you much about the vehicle’s dimensions just yet. What we do know is that the new generation will most likely not be wider than the current W463 model that has been out since 1990. But even if the size will not increase, what we do know is that Mercedes has developed a more spacious cabin with its smarter packaging. Besides that, the new interior will have a technology infusion, which we have already known about for quite some time now.

While the V12-powered Mercedes-AMG G65 is considered as the most powerful factory-built unit that anyone can get with its 621hp output, the creation by Ares Design offers even more power. Certain tuners are known for wanting to break ground and test limits. For this upscale-looking beast, there’s Modena-based coachbuilder Ares Design to thank. This tuner was actually founded in 2015 by former CEO of Lotus, Dany Bahar.

Just recently, Ares Design revealed the X-Raid. It is a dramatic looking coachbuilt G-Class that produces 760 horsepower (566 kilowatts). That is almost 140 horsepower more than the factory built G65. The Ares X-Raid was based on the Mercedes-AMG G63, and it even uses the same 5.5 liter V8 by AMG. But it was tuned to perform even better than what it can already do. As for performance, the X-Raid has a limited top speed of 155 miles per hour (249 kilometers per hour).

As mentioned earlier, the X-Raid has quite an interesting design. Though it may look like a heavy car, the body panels were made with lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum, which cuts down around 440 pounds (200 kilograms) compared to the original factory version. It now sits on a set of 22-inch forged wheels especially made by Ares Design. And for the interior, it gets a custom made X-Raid steering wheel, and now has a “completely new cockpit”. The interior is dressed in Nappa leather, and for a more comfortable and luxurious ride, passengers in the back get single VIP seats.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been around for quite some time now but to bid it farewell, the company has launched the Mercedes-AMG G65 Final Edition. Mercedes will only build a total of 65 examples of the Final Edition, which will be sold worldwide. And each of them will come with a price tag of 310,233 euros (around $368,000).

To make it look exclusive and high-end, the SUVs will feature bronze accents on the exterior - from the 21 inch wheels, the bumpers, front grille surround, mirrors, to the center section of the spare wheel cover at the back. Both sides of the body get a high-gloss black trim in the protective strips, and the grille up front now gets a black mesh center.

Inside the Final Edition’s cabin are a number of upscale features like the black nappa leather that covers the seats, and the carbon-fiber-like finish for the seat bolsters. To give it some contrast while keeping it looking high-end, Mercedes gave the diamond quilted center sections bronze stitching. Furthermore, there is a light brown weave that highlights the carbon-fiber trim throughout the interior. Heated and ventilated seats will ensure the comfort of passengers when the climate changes.

We all know about the Mercedes-AMG G63 and its capabilities, and we must say that it is one powerful SUV. However, it seems like one tuning company is still not satisfied with what it could already offer, so it decided to beef it up with an even bigger powertrain. But we have to say that German aftermarket tuner Posaidon did the right thing when it decided to upgrade the G63 in terms of looks and performance.

Now called the Posaidon G63 RS 850, it continues to have the same 5.5 liter biturbo V8 engine under its hood, except it has been tweaked to carry out as much as 850 horsepower (633 kilowatts) and 995 pound-feet (1,350 Newton-metres) of torque. This allows for a 3.6 second time when doing the 0-62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) sprint. The boosted engine now has quite an impressive top speed of 285 kmh (177 mph). For the sake of comparison, the G63’s original 5.5 liter engine only gave out 571 horsepower (425 kW) and 560 pound-feet (760 Nm) of torque from the factory.

Thanks to a remapped ECU with upgraded internals to the seven speed AMG Speedshift G-Tronic gearbox that made the performance upgrade possible. Other than that, the chassis also got a little bit of an upgrade, which now features an adaptive damping system with three varying settings. The modified Mercedes-AMG G63 now comes with a set of 10.5 x 22 inch alloy wheels that wear 285/40R22 high performance tires. It comes with gold-painted brake calipers just like that of the less powerful S63 AMG.

As the rivalry between Volvo and Range Rover’s premium SUVs continue, Mercedes-Benz throws in the new GLS Grand Edition, a new trim option for its flagship three-row SUV model. The Grand Edition Euro-spec sport utility vehicle will be featuring brand new interior and exterior packages available for the GLS 350d, 400 and 500. The list consists of 20-inch alloys, several choices of colors for the body paint and a choice for leather lined interior.

To help draw the line between the standard GLS and this new level trim, Mercedes will be adding special GLS Grand Edition badges within the front end of the SUV. This will be placed next to the front wheel arches or on the side of the wings. The German marque will only make this available in Europe which will cost about $3,001 for the exterior and another $7,764 for the interior using the current exchange rates. In Germany, each package will be sold at €2,300 and € 5,950 respectively.

Nevertheless, the upgraded version will be offered with high end premium features such as the trim-exclusive porcelain and espresso brown cabin color motif and posh nappa leather seats with diamond quilt design and brown stitching. Its dashboard will likewise get the same leather material with light stripes and open-pore wood trims while the velour mats in espresso brown color are enhanced by the SUV’s special ambient light. On the outside, the 20-inch AMG-style black alloy wheels will be featuring ten-spoke design in high gloss finish.

Mercedes-Benz has grand plans for the production of its EQ subbrand, and part of this would be to restructure its 20-year-old factory located in Vance, Alabama. To do this, the automaker will have to invest about $1 billion in the plant, so they could also electrify all models in their lineup by 2022. All in all, they plan to electrify over 50 different models.

Markus Schaefer, member of the divisional board of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for production and supply chain, said in relation to the investment that their global network is ready for electric vehicles considering the fact that there are production locations for EVs and batteries in several continents including Asia, Europe, and the United States. He was also glad to say that production of the EQ in the U.S. will be a lot quicker for them, because of the plant modernization in Tuscaloosa.

At last year’s Paris Motor Show, Daimler unveiled an EQ concept SUV, and it was described as a near production model. The EQ sub-brand consists of sedans, crossovers and SUVs.

Earlier this year, we had the chance to test the Mercedes-AMG GLE43. That time, the GLE43 had a 3.0-liter biturbo V6 engine that was capable of producing an impressive 362 horsepower. We were quite impressed with the six-cylinder mill considering that the car weighed almost 5,000 pounds. Now, the company decided they would give the 2018 model year an extra push of 23 horsepower, now giving it a maximum of 385 horsepower for the “43” model.

The sporty model will still be equipped with the same nine-speed automatic transmission that gives power to the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. But the other GLE models will only be getting a seven-speed gear box. As for performance, we have not heard from Mercedes USA just yet, but we do know that the previous year model could sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in just 5.6 seconds, while continuing to a top speed of 130 miles per hour (209 kph).

With this performance upgrade, we would naturally expect a price increase as well. The 2018 model year GLE43 now starts at $67,750 MSRP - that is $600 more than its predecessor. If the GLE43 is not fast enough for you, then you can opt for the more powerful GLE63 model that will cost you almost double at $102,550. The “63” model can give out 550 horsepower, or you can even go all out with the 577 horsepower GLE63, which starts at $109,700. These models can now be had with additional wood trims as part of the 2018 upgrade.

Nowadays, there has been a surge of modified Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons, and we are happy with all that. Only recently, the German automaker powerhouse revealed its 2 deluxe, limited editions for the G63 and G65 SUVs. However, if they are not your cup of tea then tuner RevoZport got you covered, as they are now offering their latest upgrade package that makes the squared shape SUV even more daring. The G63 and G65 are not exactly innocent looking from the start but now RevoZport has raised their intimidating features to exciting heights.

This menace vehicle has an astounding 1,995 mm width, making it as wide as the humongous G500 4x4 Squared. Among the modified features are the brawny wheel arches that stretch the sides by about 70 mm. Due to its broadness, wider wheels can be put in by G-Wagon. Customers may also opt for a portal system that can snugly fit the G63 or G65 with wheels of the G500 4x4. If you are a big fan of the carbon fiber finish, then you would like this part. A set of striking carbon fiber vents take up most of the hood.

It also serves another purpose- the designs fuse a smart "water trap" system that makes sure water doesn't enter the engine area. Other exterior upgrades include a noticeable front splitter with unified LED daytime running lights, carbon mirror caps, roof spoiler and a carbon spare wheel cover. The carbon fibre feature doesn’t stop there, as the interior of the G63 and G65 RevoZport has been enclosed with extensive carbon fibre.
