Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will be discontinued

From the latest interview with Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran by Automotive News, we learned that the company is letting go of its zero-emissions hatchback a.k.a. the B-Class Electric Drive effective on the third quarter of this year. It hasn’t even been three years yet since it started selling in the market in December 2013. The reason behind its departure isn’t only caused by the EV’s obvious poor sales performance, but also because Mercedes-Benz will soon to renovate its manufacturing facility in Restatt, Germany.

Details about replacing this model have not been revealed yet but the factory will be converted mainly for Mercedes Benz’s upcoming compact model range. By 2018, the German car manufacturer is looking to launch an all-new A-Class hatchback along with other compact vehicle models. While the traditionally powered B-Class maintains its production course, Mercedes sees to it that its newly developed EQ sub brand will find the new range of EVs ready for take-off. More than ten vehicles with no combustion engines are being prepared for launch all the way until 2025. All these come with an investment amounting to $11.7 Billion.

It seems Mercedes finally knows what to expect as far as electrification is involved especially after setting out the Concept EQ last 2016 in Paris. Though the concept model is actually a crossover, talks about another EQ concept are strong and it seems to be heading its way to this year’s Frankfurt Motorshow. If so, Mercedes is looking to unveil a production hatchback EV that will probably rival the BMW i3, if not exceed it. Rumors also suggest that it is set to arrive as a road-going model by 2020.

Mercedes-Benz has commenced series production of the B-class Electric Drive that will arrive in the United States this summer and in Europe later this year. The B-class Electric Drive – Daimler’s second battery powered vehicle next to the Smart ForTwo EV – could travel up to around 200 km (124 miles) in a single charge and could accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph).

Mercedes developed the model in partnership with Tesla Motors. It is ran by a Tesla-sourced front-mounted electric motor that provides up to 174 hp.

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the delivery of over 1 million B-Class since the sports tourer was launched in 2005. The B-Class has been logging a good performance in Germany and is currently considered the market leader in the compact MPV sector. Mercedes considered Germany as the largest market for the B-Class, followed by China.

According to Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales, the B-Class is the perfect combination of “sporty design, impressive driving dynamics and incomparable driving comfort,” making it popular with customers. Källenius noted that the current B-Class model is allowing Mercedes to penetrate the most diverse customer groups, “from families with children to active seniors.”

B-Class also proved popular with fleet customers, being voted Corporate Car of the Year in 2013. Likewise, the most popular engines for the B-Class are the B 180 petrol and diesel engines, each accounting for around 30 percent of sales. Around 50 percent of B-Class vehicles sold come with a navigation and infotainment system.

The A-class and B-class Mercedes-Benz range is now broader with the addition of new 'ECO SE' and all-wheel-drive variants that offer impressive fuel economy. The new ECO SE economy models will replace the A180 CDI SE and B180 CDI SE manual variants. Mercedes claims that the A180 CDI ECO SE has an average of 78.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 92g/km.

Meanwhile, the outgoing model returns 74.3mpg and emits 98g/km of CO2. The same improvements were applied to the Mercedes B180 CDI ECO SE, with 74.3mpg and 98g/km of CO2. Meanwhile, the outgoing model returns 68.9mpg and emits 108g/km of CO2. As a result, both are now free to tax, as opposed to only the A-class.

They also benefit from low company car tax bands. Set to become available in January 2014, the ECO SE models received aerodynamic enhancements, some weight-saving measures and powertrain modifications so that it will become more efficient without sacrificing performance. Mercedes said that the power, torque, top speed and acceleration figures of both models are unchanged.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the petrol engines powering its A- and B-Class already meet the required emission limits as set by EURO 6, two years before the standard comes into effect on September 1, 2014. As a matter of fact, Mercedes engines have already undercut the particulate limits being introduced for the first time for petrol engines.

Mercedes also offers to recode models that have already been delivered to buyers. The direct-injection petrol engines in the A 180, A 200 and A 250, and their corresponding models in the B-Class were able to undercut the emission limits thanks especially to advanced Mercedes-Benz technology.

The technology also enabled direct-injection petrol engines to undercut the strict particle number limit of 6 x 1011 per km, which would only become compulsory in 2017 on the second stage of EURO 6.

By 2014, Mercedes-Benz would already start offering an electric version of its new B-class compact in the U.S., according to an insider. The EV will be built on a new front-wheel-drive platform and will utilize battery packs, electric motor and other parts provided by Tesla Motors.

Automobilwoche, a sibling publication of Automotive News, spoke to a Daimler source, who said that the company seeks to offer one more battery-powered unit to the market. An electric version of the Smart ForTwo is available from Daimler, which holds a 4.7% stake in Tesla. The battery packs are supplied by Tesla for the second-generation Smart EV.

In the fall, Daimler will start the production of the third-generation Smart EV, with the use of its own batteries and electric motor. Furthermore, the source said that it intends to offer a B-class hybrid in 2014, which will have a small internal combustion engine since the range-extender has been postponed. The source said that zero-emission vehicles get more favorable classifications and higher incentives than vehicles with a range extender.

Infiniti’s debut of the Etherea Concept means that it is prepared to take on rivals such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series with a new compact hatchback that is currently in development. This car’s underpinnings will be borrowed from the Mercedes-Benz parts bin. The technology partnership between Nissan/Renault and Daimler involves use of the front-wheel-drive platform built for Benz’s A- and B-Class family.

It’s believed that this Infiniti hatch will be built on its own version of the platform. The design used by Infiniti’s compact will be unusual for a five-door hatchback.

It has less of a two-box shape like that of the Audi A3. It’s likely that this may mean that Infiniti will be offering a small, low crossover. But what’s more probable is that this will be regular car that has a fastback profile. Its basic powertrains will be gasoline while in Europe, diesel will be offered. However, it’s possible that Infiniti will offer a version that’s either a hybrid or fully electric version.
