On the first round of Euro NCAP crash tests, Mercedes-Benz’s latest Citan van received only three stars. Among the criticisms that the Citan got were centered on its hard dashboard structures that may lead to front-seat passengers sustaining severe head injuries and its airbags that didn’t offer adequate protection.
Furthermore, it scored poor on pedestrian protection due to a flaw in its bumper and bonnet design. The Citan is built on the same underpinnings as the Renault Kangoo, which Euro NCAP has not tested yet. While the last Kangoo got four stars, that rating was given under more lenient standards. The automaker will sell the Citan as both a commercial vehicle and passenger car.
Families that need space but are on a budget are likely to be attracted to the passenger car that’s given additional equipment. But buyers may be discouraged by its child protection score of 34/49. Mercedes has insisted that the Citan is safe. It’s also denying that it failed in any of the tests. The charm of Tesla Motors’ vehicle offering lies in the fact that they offer a high level of performance with zero emissions. However, Tesla also wants its cars to be remembered as some of the safest vehicles in the automotive world. Just recently, Tesla is claiming that its Model 3 midsize sedan offers the best chance for passengers to avoid serious injury in case of a collision.
On its Twitter account, Tesla said its Model 3 boasts of having the lowest probability of causing injury of all cars that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has ever tested. Tesla noted that the Model 3 managed to receive a perfect 5-star safety rating in all categories – including sub-categories. Tesla had previously boasted that they expect the new Model 3 to have the lowest probability of personal injury than any other car.

Last year was probably one of the busiest years for the European New Car Assessment Programme, with a total of around 70 cars tested. But amongst that huge pack of vehicles, one model managed to really stand out, and this was the second-generation Volvo XC60. After going through all those cars, the European NCAP made a decision that this is the safest car overall.
Ever since, Volvo has had a good reputation when it comes to car safety, and that is why we are not surprised that the new XC60 got the highest score during the tests. It scored 98% for the Adult Occupant category, and for Safety Assist, it got 95%, which still is pretty impressive as most cars do not ever get a score that high.
Malin Ekholm, Vice President of Volvo Cars Safety Center, promised that no one should ever get seriously injured or killed ever riding a Volvo car by the beginning of next decade. The 2017 Ford Mustang only received a two-star rating (out of five) last January when it went through the European New Car Assessment Program. But now that there is a 2018 model year, the European NCAP had to re-evaluate the new and updated model. Thanks to the additional safety technology, the score had been raised to three stars. Not a huge difference, but it’s definitely better than a two.
Unlike the US based 2018 Mustang, the Euro-spec one now comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assistance. The ‘Safety Assist Pillar’ increased from 16 percent to 61 percent - that is equivalent to a five-star rating in this category. These features are optional for the US market. The refreshed Mustang is now equipped with front airbags that meet Euro NCAP’s requirements, helping to avoid the worst case scenario during a serious collision.

Mazda seems too far ahead in Safety technology for having four of its vehicles chosen as the safest on the road. Very recently, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has included the Japanese automaker’s CX-9 among the Top Safety Pick+ ratings along with the CX3 crossover, the Mazda 6 and the Mazda 3.
While its highly advanced crash avoidance system lead to its Top Safety Pick rating +, the CX-9 scored the highest in all 5 crash tests which included rigorous testing on the new LED headlights.
Other midsize SUVs that have earned the top spot are Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Honda Pilot. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives its Top Safety Pick Award to the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, and they have got videos of it during the crash test procedures to prove to us why.
The procedure requires cars to go through five crashworthiness tests including: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. While the Bolt came out with good results on all five tests, one thing that it does not have are good headlights to avoid getting into an accident.
Results by the IIHS say that the headlights "provide good visibility but produce excessive glare for oncoming drivers". Tesla Motors could now confidently say that its Tesla Model X is the safest sports utility vehicle and perhaps the safest electric vehicle so far.
After all, no other SUV or vehicle could surpass the recent ratings scored by the Tesla Model X (2017 model year) in the latest round of independent tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Of course, there is nothing that exceeds the maximum five stars awarded by NHTSA to vehicles following testing. This means other SUVs or vehicles could – at best – match the ratings earned by the 2017 Tesla Model X.
Overall, five variants of the 2017 Tesla Model X SUV were tested: Model X 60D AWD, Model X 75D AWD, Model X 90D AWD, Model X P90D AWD and Model X P100D AWD. Following the introduction of the new generation Suzuki Swift in Europe for the 2017 model year, the hatchback from the Japanese company managed to score fairly in the latest round of safety tests conducted by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). In fact, a standard version of the 2017 Suzuki Swift earned a 3-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, while a variant equipped with the optional safety pack equipped version received a 4-star rating from the assessment program.
In the area of Adult Occupant protection, the 2017 Suzuki Swift scored 83 percent. According to Euro NCAP, the Swift’s passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test, offering good protection of the knees and femurs for the driver and passenger.
Meanwhile, the full-width rigid barrier test showed that the Swift offers marginal chest protection, although protection of critical body areas was considered by Euro NCAP as good or adequate. After earning the maximum safety rating of five stars from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), the 2017 BMW 5 Series (G30) was named by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) a “Top Safety Pick +.”
Being granted with the Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS isn’t an easy feat. Currently, IIHS grants two awards safety awards for 2017: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. To become 2017 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle should earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints). Likewise, a vehicle should earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. Qualifying for 2017 Top Safety Pick+ means a vehicle managed to earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. Following the necessary tests, IIHS adjudged that the 2017 BMW 5 Series is qualified to be granted the Top Safety Pick+ award. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given its Top Safety Pick+ award to the redesigned version of the 2017 Kia Cadenza. This was a result of excellent a front crash prevention system and good crashworthiness ratings with headlights being considered as acceptable.
In order to achieve the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle should be able to get good rating in all of the five crashworthiness tests. It should also have a front crash prevention system that will get either an advanced rating or superior rating. Finally, the headlights should have a good rating, or at the least an acceptable rating.
This redesigned version is the first Cadenza to have undergone the small overlap front protection conducted by IIHS. What this test does is to duplicate the situation wherein the front corner, on the driver side, crashes against another vehicle or even an object. BMW is well known for its premium aesthetic releases and a compelling performance in the upper mid category. And now it can add another achievement to its long list of successes: the German automotive company's latest BMW 5 Series (G30) bagged a 5-star rating safety in the Euro NCAP Crash Test, securing a solid 81% overall score.
The midsize sedan got an impressive 91 percent rating in adult occupant safety, while getting a splendid 85 percent in the child occupant safety. The premium car also bagged an 81 percent rating in the pedestrian safety evaluation. The impressive performance of BMW gained the respect of the Euro NCAP body, which remarked that the sixth-generation model series' performance in the pedestrian safety assessment was remarkable due to its classic active hood and "Person Warning" setup that has a city braking duty.
Euro NCAP also lauded the BMW 5 series' autonomous breaking tech and remarked that it was effective in guiding the driver dodge a crash with another vehicle or a pedestrian. With its superior results on vehicle occupant protection made for children and adults, standard safety features and pedestrian protection, the BMW 5 series automatically clinched the top spot within its segment. We all want to know how safe our vehicles are on the road. Of course, carmakers do brag about the safety levels of their offerings, but it’s really up to unbiased assessment agencies to tell us the real deal. In Europe, the safety levels of new cars are tested by European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). In fact, Euro NCAP just completed its latest round of safety tests, and the results were quite mixed.
For the latest round of testing, six vehicles underwent Euro NCAP’s stringent process: Audi Q5, Citroen C3, Fiat 500, Ford Ka+, Land Rover Discovery and Toyota C-HR. The results of the tests should make the people at Audi, Land Rover and Toyota leap for joy while leave those at Fiat and Ford scratching their heads. Euro NCAP’s overall safety rating is based on assessment in four important areas: Adult protection; Child protection; Pedestrian protection; and Safety Assist technologies. Vehicles are rated overall from one to five stars. The more stars a vehicle has, the safer it is.
According to Euro-NCAP, both the new Audi Q5 luxury SUV and Toyota C-HR subcompact crossover were able to earn five-star ratings from the assessment program, thanks to their good all-round performance. A five-star rating means these vehicles offer overall good performance in crash protection and are well-equipped with robust crash avoidance technology. In particular, the Toyota C-HR scored 95 percent for Adult protection; 77 percent for Child protection; 76 percent for Pedestrian protection; and 78 percent for Safety Assist technologies. They were so near, and yet so far. This is how we could describe the saga of two electric cars -- the Tesla Model S and the BMW i3 – in their attempt to earn the highest safety award being given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Of course, every carmaker wants their vehicles to earn at least the Top Safety Pick award. However, there is nothing much better than earning the Top Safety Pick+ (Plus) award. Why? The new Ford Mustang muscle car looks menacing and is surely quick and fast. But it seems its European version isn’t as safe as the pony car intended for the United States. This was recently revealed in the latest crash tests conducted by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
Euro NCAP has already commenced subjecting new vehicles to its 2017 test regime. Among the first vehicles to undergo crash tests were the Euro-spec Mustang as well as the new Volvo S90 and V90. While the Volvo S90 and V90 were both impressive, the Euro-spec 2017 Ford Mustang was a disappointment. According to Euro NCAP, both the Volvo S90 and V90 – with maximum five-star ratings -- were able to exceed the best overall test scores of any model subjected to crash tests in 2016. Euro NCAP attributed these ratings to the fact the Volvo S90 and V90 are fitted – as standard -- with autonomous emergency braking for cars and pedestrians and are offering lane and speed assistance. In addition, the S90 and V90 are now two of the best three Euro NCAP scores. Interestingly, the third one was also a Volvo.
As for the Euro-spec Ford Mustang – in its pre-facelift version – the pony car just managed to earn a dismal two-star rating. This was a far cry from the five-star rating that its American version received from the New Car Assessment Program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration years ago. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has reviewed the 2016 Volkswagen Passat and given it a 2016 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, following a series of tests conducted by the institute.
In an announcement, Volkswagen of America, Inc., said the 2016 Passat in particular aced the IIHS Small Overlap Front Crash test, receiving the highest possible rating of “good.” It also received “good” ratings in other crashworthiness tests conducted by the IIHS.
The Passat used in the tests was equipped with the available Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) system. The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has awarded the new Subaru Outback (2.0D 'EyeSight', LHD, European specifications) with the highest five-star rating for its 2014 overall safety performance test. According to the European unit of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., Subaru Europe, new Outback managed to receive high scores in all four key areas: adult occupant protection (85%); child occupant protection (87%); pedestrian protection (70%); and safety assist.
The Outback also scored maximum points in the side impact barrier test, with good protection of all critical body areas. Subaru Europe also disclosed the Euro NCAP tests on the front seats and head restraints as well as a geometric assessment of the rear restraints indicated good protection against whiplash injuries on rear-end collision.
The Outback also managed to score max points for its protection of the 18-month dummy in the dynamic crash tests. Volkswagen’s 2015 Passat (B8) follows its predecessor when it comes to safety as the new model managed to receive the maximum rating of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The overall safety rating of 5 stars for the new Passat is composed of the results obtained by the vehicle in four sub-areas: occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and security support.
According to the press release, the occupant protection for adults include a head-on crash test against an aluminum barrier at 64 km/h and 40% overlap, as well as a side impact at 50 km/h in the vehicle structure and a pole side impact at 29 km/h.
The new Passat managed to receive 85 percent of the maximum rating. Toyota Motor Corp. says the latest iteration of RAV4 crossover earned a passing score in the latest round of tests simulating small-overlap front crashes as conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. According to Toyota Chief Safety Technology Officer Secretary Seigo Kuzumaki, the 2015 RAV4 got a “good” score in the latest test, which should allow the crossover to earn institute’s coveted Top Safety Pick rating.
The 2014 RAV4 failed to earn the status after getting poor results in the small overlap test conducted in July 2013, prompting Toyota engineers to vow an overhaul and to make the crossover more than strong enough to pass.
The RAV4 needs a small-overlap rating score of at least “acceptable” to earn Top Safety Pick.
