Mercedes-Benz Citan receives only three stars at the Euro NCAP crash tests

On the first round of Euro NCAP crash tests, Mercedes-Benz’s latest Citan van received only three stars. Among the criticisms that the Citan got were centered on its hard dashboard structures that may lead to front-seat passengers sustaining severe head injuries and its airbags that didn’t offer adequate protection.

Furthermore, it scored poor on pedestrian protection due to a flaw in its bumper and bonnet design. The Citan is built on the same underpinnings as the Renault Kangoo, which Euro NCAP has not tested yet. While the last Kangoo got four stars, that rating was given under more lenient standards. The automaker will sell the Citan as both a commercial vehicle and passenger car.

Families that need space but are on a budget are likely to be attracted to the passenger car that’s given additional equipment. But buyers may be discouraged by its child protection score of 34/49. Mercedes has insisted that the Citan is safe. It’s also denying that it failed in any of the tests. The automaker said that it doesn’t plan to revise the Citan in light of the findings from Euro NCAP.

MacGyver partners with Mercedes-Benz to promote the new Citan

Who doesn’t miss seeing MacGyver’s Richard Dean Anderson back on television? We have Mercedes-Benz to thank for that. The German automaker is set to release an advertising campaign, which includes three all-new episodes that will start to be aired on September 18 online. MacGyver will be acquiring a new gadget – the Mercedes-Benz’s new Citan minivan.

Putting the non-violent action hero together with a minivan may be surprising at first but what they have in common is that they’re both crafty and resourceful. Next month, the Citan will make its debut at the IAA International Commercial Vehicle Show. It will be arriving next month in various iterations.

The Citan will be offered in any of three lengths/styles -- a panel van (similar to the Ford Transit Connect), a Mixto (which could accommodate a minimum of five people and has adequate room in the back), or a Crewbus that has to have three rows of seats at least. Those vans are offered with one of three diesel engines, with power that varies from 74 hp to 109 hp, or a supercharged gasoline engine that delivers 113 hp.

The new Citan urban delivery van from Mercedes-Benz has completed the rigorous and grueling winter testing, which every Mercedes-Benz unit has to undertake to be qualified to bear the three-pointed star mark. The new van model has undergone various other tests, which are a testament to the high quality of the body, drive system, suspension and interior.

The winters in northern Sweden are the ideal conditions to bring the new Mercedes-Benz Citan to the test with the meter-high snow lining both sides of the road and sub-zero temperatures down to -40°C, among others.

For 10 years, Mercedes-Benz Vans has been putting every new model to test under extreme conditions near the Arctic Circle. Vito and Sprinter vans have also undergone rigorous winter testing on various occasions.

The compact van market in Europe outsells the U.S. with annual sales of 700,000 units. It then comes as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz will offer the Citan -- a new front-wheel-drive commercial van based on the successor to the compact Renault Kangoo -- in Europe. So far, Mercedes-Benz USA doesn’t intend to sell the Citan in the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz has released drawings of the Citan. It will debut this September at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hannover, Germany. Sales start this fall. The Citan is a combination of the words "city" and "titan.”

The Citan would be the smallest van in Mercedes-Benz’s lineup, which includes the Vario (the biggest van), followed in size by the Sprinter and Vito. The automaker forecasts that the Citan will attract 5% of the European market.

These official sketches from Mercedes-Benz show off the Citan, the successor to the long-discontinued Vaneo commercial van that’s based on the Renault Kangoo. The Mercedes-Benz Citan is a new front-wheel drive urban delivery vehicle that’s set to get its first public premiere at the Hannover commercial vehicle show this September before sales begin. A right-hand-drive version is expected later this year.

The Citan will eventually be available in five body versions and three types of wheelbases. It would be powered by a lineup that Renault developed but was enhanced by Mercedes-Benz, including four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that range in power from 59bhp to 108bhp.

CNG and LPG variants are expected to follow. Mercedes-Benz said that the European market for light commercial vehicles has increased to 700,000 each year.
