The smallest wagon in the Mercedes-Benz family is being treated to a special version that delivers extra levels of elegance and style both on the exterior and the interior. The German premium carmaker will be unveiling this new special compact model series, the Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake Night Edition, at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Mercedes’ new CLA Shooting Brake Night Edition is basically a CLA Shooting Brake that is laden with exterior effects from the carmaker’s AMG performance brand as well as with a rich interior derived from the Urban Line, as marked by black and white accents. Equipped with a DCT transmission, the CLA Shooting Brake 200 d Night Edition consumes 3.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (combined) and emits 101 grams of carbon dioxide per km (combined).

Mercedes-Benz debuts redesigned CLA Coupe at 2016 New York Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz will officially be unveiling the redesigned 4-door CLA Coupe on March 23 at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Though the CLA already has an emotional and sporty design, this is enhanced even further using the front and the rear bumpers plus the light-alloy wheel designs. Even the interior has received some improvements like the chrome-plated controls, the new seat covers, and even trim parts.

The comfort and safety of the 2017 CLA have been enhanced through the HANDS-FREE ACCESS, LED High Performance headlamps, with the additional options of incorporating smartphones to its control systems.

CLA is already known to lead its segment when it comes to safety and this is enhanced further with the Active Brake Assist. Having the HANDS-FREE ACCESS as an option for convenience strengthens that lead. In addition to having a more dynamic style, the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 had its interior updated. With a 375 hp top performance and 350 lb.-ft. of maximum torque, it is one of the most powerful in its class.

Both the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake feature a dynamic design language that is not only marked by rounded contours but also by their athletic proportions. In particular, the CLA Shooting Brake comes with styling elements – like its frameless windows – that give it coupe-like characteristics but with the practicality and versatility of an estate car.

Mercedes-Benz is expecting the new GLA compact crossover to capture more entry-level customers than the CLA compact sedan – as it is more functional and more spacious in the rear seats. Bart Herring, general manager of product planning for Mercedes-Benz USA, remarked that while the GLA is as fun and youth-oriented, it also features “a level of usability” that compact sedan doesn’t have.

Both vehicles are underpinned by the same platform. He noted that the compact crossover segment is one of the fastest growing in the United States, and the GLA will face the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 and offerings from volume brands. He expects half of customers from non-luxury brands like those who currently own Toyota, Nissan, Honda sedans.

Edmunds.com has said that compact SUVs -- in which according to Edmunds where compact crossovers belong -- are currently the “hottest-selling vehicles.” Edmunds remarked that the compact SUV segment is now the fourth-largest in the United States – with midsize cars, compact cars and large trucks as larger. Compact SUVs now holds 10.8 percent of the US auto market, compared to just 5.8 percent a decade ago, according to Edmunds.

German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz has hiked the output capacity for its CLA sedan to ease up tight supplies that have led to limited deliveries. The increased production bodes well for the United States, as the market is bound to receive more CLAs. Mercedes’ Kecskemet site in Hungary already added a third shift of production in May.

The plant built 109,266 cars in 2013 and is slated to produce the station wagon version of the CLA, the CLA Shooting Brake. A spokesman for the carmaker, however, said that Mercedes-Benz USA has "no current plans" to sell the wagon version. Daimler AG chief executive Dieter Zetsche told Automotive News in an interview that he expects "a positive reaction" to the increased allocation for the US market.

Mercedes has been targeting a surge in compact vehicle sales. There has been a tight supply of CLAs in the US since spring as dealers were able to sell out the initial allocation. According to Mercedes executives, there were times that supply of CLAs at dealerships dropped to fewer than 10 days.

Mercedes-Benz updated the CLA for the 2015MY and the first thing that caught our attention is that the CLA 220 CDI is now more powerful. Of course, it is not a big number, only 5 kw for a total of 130 kW or 177 hp and 350 Nm of torque, but us enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.2 seconds, with a top speed limited at 232 km/h or 144 mph.

Fuel consumption of this model is 4.0 l/100 km, while CO2 emissions are 104 g/km. Moreover, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA 180 CDI has CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km. Other equipment and appointments for 2015MY CLA include a new option available for the sports models: the AMG 19-inch multi-spoke light-alloy wheels are available painted black and with high-sheen finish.

The interior is now available with an updated ambient lightning system that offers 12 colour schemes, while the trim is available in a satin-finish light brown poplar wood variant. Also for the interior there is a new optional 8-inch screen, while the Convenience Telephony is now able to connect in to high-speed LTE networks.

Cars such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3 Sedan are becoming more popular in the United States due to the fact that they are priced below $30,000 and offer plenty of standard features. Asked if Lexus would offer such a model, executive vice president of the company, Mark Templin, said that they really can’t offer a vehicle with the quality, durability and reliability seen on other Lexus models.

Still, he added that they can offer a car under $30,000 but it wouldn’t be a Lexus, it would be a Toyota. Mercedes-Benz introduced the CLA back in September 2013 and now, this model comprises 11 percent of the brand’s car sales.

Templin considers that what the German carmakers are doing is not luxury. Moreover, publications such as Consumer Reports and USA Today weren’t convinced either by the Mercedes-Benz CLA validating Templin’s point that this is not luxury.

There will be shortage in supply of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan until the second quarter of 2014 as the model remains very popular. "Yeah, inventory is tight," remarked Mercedes-Benz USA chief executive Steve Cannon, adding that sales in 2013 exceeded expectations. "The fact that we sold faster than we expected is a very good sign," he said.

He remarked that dealers will get higher allocations as 2014 progresses, with the supply situation easing in the second quarter. Cannon said that the success of the CLA won't help US dealers get more CLA since production is tight around the world.

Mercedes rolled out the CLA in September 2013, with 14,113 sold at the close of in 2013. It is the first vehicle in a new segment of European compact luxury vehicles that will be joined by the Audi A3 sedan in April, the Mercedes GLA crossover in September and the BMW Active Tourer crossover in 2015.

Higher demand for the $29,900 Mercedes-Benz CLA will lead to "tight inventories and low days supply" from February through June 2014, the carmaker told its dealers in the United States. In a Dec. 9 letter to dealers, Mercedes said its CLA's plant is already at working full capacity, and production should support demand by July.

"This is our best launch in 20 years," according to Steve Cannon, chief of Mercedes' US sales. He said that the CLA has "been a phenomenal success right out of the gate." Thanks to the gains posted by the CLA in November, Mercedes managed to widen its US lead over BMW in the month. Mercedes logged a 14-percent hike in deliveries in the first 11 months of 2013 to post a 7,610-vehicle lead.

While Daimler chief executive Dieter Zetsche said in July that he expected Mercedes to come up short again in the race for US sales supremacy in 2013, figures had the carmaker poised to end BMW's two-year reign. Through the CLA, Mercedes is able entice younger US buyers, according to the letter to dealers.

Mercedes-Benz, as a luxury carmaker, typically prices its products at a premium. That could be the reason why its new entry-level CLA sedan front-wheel-drive, which is offered at less than $30,000, excluding destination charges, has raised some differing remarks among reviewers. With its low price and front-wheel-drive configuration, reviewers have voiced their remarks on whether the CLA sedan is really a Mercedes.

For instance, Edmunds.com said that even among rwd Mercedes owners, it is hard to tell if the 2014 Mercedes CLA250 is front-wheel drive, since it accelerates and steers with the precision of more elite models.

Consumer Reports came up with a harsher review, saying the CLA250 is not a smooth-riding Mercedes-Benz vehicle. It said that CLA250 car “feels brittle on some impacts,” making the ride stiff. It added that the CLA has sacrificed cabin quietness.

Due to the buzz with the CLA in the United States, Mercedes-Benz decided to launch a station wagon version of the CLA in 2015. Dubbed CLA Shooting Brake, the car was confirmed by company sources to Automotive News and it will be inspired by the CLS Shooting Brake.

Comparing it with the CLA sedan, the new CLA Shooting Brake will offer mode space, including more rear headroom and cargo space. Furthermore, the new CLA Shooting Brake will be the fifth model using Daimler’s front-wheel-drive platform, joining the A-Class and the B-Class hatchbacks, CLA and the GLA crossover.

Still, we don’t know yet if Mercedes-Benz will sell the CLA Shooting Brake in the United States. Same sources said that a CLA convertible is not in Daimler’s plans but could arrive then the next-generation CLA will debut, which means in about five years.

Mercedes-Benz posted a 16-percent year-on-year surge in luxury vehicle sales in September 2013 to 143,000 cars and sports utility vehicles. With the strong sales results in September, Mercedes logged a 10-percent jump in sales in the first nine months of 2013 to 1.06 million cars and SUVs. Mercedes managed to outperform premium sales rivals and fellow German carmakers BMW and Audi during the month.

The BMW brand recorded an 8-percent hike in deliveries in September to 158,000, and a 9-percent rise in the first nine months of 2013 to 1.21 million units. Audi gained 10 percent in September, contributing to an 8-percent jump in sales in the first nine months of the year. In comparison, Mercedes' sales in the nine-month period is around 88 percent of BMW's this year, from 87 percent in 2012. Audi’s sales in the nine-month period, meanwhile, are around 98 percent of BMW’s.

The launch of the CLA coupe during the period contributed much to Mercedes’ sales, helping drive the demand to almost double for the carmaker compact models. Mercedes, BMW and Audi are all aiming for record global deliveries in 2013, helped by new models like the CLA, the BMW 4-series coupe and the sedan version of Audi A3. Frank Biller, an analyst at LBBW, remarked that Mercedes “is getting some tailwinds from its model cycle," noting that “young products are pushing sales."

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA compact sedan will be the carmaker’s conquest vehicle in the United States, according to Steve Cannon, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz USA. Cannon told Automotive News in an interview that they set a target to reach 30,000 annual sales in the US within a few years. He remarked that they “did not come to a volume price point to do niche volume."

He said that as Mercedes ramps up production of the front-wheel-drive CLA, the volume potential of at least 30,000 over the course of time is expected, adding that the only constraint will be global production capacity. Cannon told Automotive News that the carmaker is aiming for a similar annual volume for the GLA fwd crossover that will be available for sale in September 2014.

CLA went on sale in the US in September 2013. Both the CLA and the GLA are underpinned by a new Mercedes-Benz fwd platform that will also underpin the B-class Electric Drive plug-in that will be launched in the US early 2014. The smaller A-class hatchback was the only variant did not make it to Mercedes’ US lineup. Cannon said that in the longer term, they aim the CLA to take the place of a C-class volume.

Mercedes-Benz may produce the next-generation CLA compact car in Mexico as part of a joint venture with Nissan, Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche remarked to Automotive News. He said that a decision on the matter would be out early 2014. Zetsche said the CLA compact would be built at Nissan’s Aguascalientes site in Mexico starting in 2018, adding that the Japanese carmaker would expand the plant to prepare for the assembly of the Mercedes model.

Nissan has said it will expand its Aguascalientes site to produce a derivative for its Infiniti brand. Mercedes will start selling the first generation of the Germany-built CLA this fall. Zetsche told Automotive News that Mercedes aims to trim its exposure to currency swings by hiking output in North America, noting that Mexico is the “best location” for the United States.

He also noted that a joint venture with Nissan would make more economic sense than building a new site. Daimler’s chairman quipped that the CLA would be produced in Mexico since it is highest-production car for the US. The new CLA compact car is underpinned by a new front-wheel-drive platform that also underpins the B-class hatchback, the GLA crossover and the A-class hatchback.

Daimler AG boss Dieter Zetsche introdiced a new Mercedes-Benz model, which is predicted to be the key to the brand’s revival, this week at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. This was Zetsche’s first major appearance since his contract was extended by the board by a period shorter than anticipated last month. Zetsche will depend on the CLA compact as the solution to Daimler's long-term underperformance in small cars.

The industry also considers the performance of this model as a factor that will affect his management record. Zetsche has a challenging task in front of him. The 59-year-old Zetsche would have to cut the gap between Mercedes and BMW and Audi by fixing a China expansion plan that had failed. He would also need to attract new buyers to the brand’s wider lineup of minis and subcompacts.

Barclays analyst Michael Tyndall said that it’s very important to get its problem in China fixed. He believes that Mercedes will also have to attract the younger generation, further emphasizing the importance of models such as the CLA.

Mercedes-Benz is asserting that its new CLA180 BlueEfficiency Edition is the most aerodynamically efficient series production road car in the world, with a 0.22 overall drag co-efficient. This saloon is included in a lineup composed of five CLA models that will make their official debut at the upcoming Geneva motor show. When compared to the CLA’s cD figure, Toyota’s Prius has a rating of 0.25 while the rating for the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics is at 0.26.

The secret to its superiority when it comes to aerodynamics efficiency is its relatively small frontal area (2.21m2) and a sequence of small but effective refinements that are not seen in other CLA models. Some of these modifications include a reworked front apron, a better sealing for the headlamps surrounds, an adjustable radiator shutter and serrated spoilers to send air to the wheelhouses.

The CLA is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that Renault co-developed. This gives the CLA an output of 120bhp and 147lb ft of torque. It can accelerate to 62mph in 9.9sec and could reach a limited top speed of 118mph. It has a combined fuel consumption of 56.5mpg and a CO2 emissions level is at 118g/km.
