This year, Mercedes-Benz expects its 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL model to surpass peak sales of 26,736, set in 2007 in the United States, according to the carmaker’s executives. With the figure, Mercedes should be bound to retain its best-seller crown in the large luxury sports utility vehicle/crossover segment.

Steve Cannon, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz USA, described the 2013 GL as the “S class of SUVs" referring to Mercedes' flagship S-class sedan, adding that the current model is better in every way. Cannon remarked that the second-generation GL is custom-fit to the US since around 53 percent of the volume of the current generation was sold in the country. Mercedes is building the seven-seat GL at its Vance plant in Alabama.

Todd Grieco, Mercedes-Benz USA product manager for SUVs, said GL commands around 25 percent of the large luxury sports utility vehicle/crossover segment, which has annual sales of around 100,000 units. The GL is outselling segment rivals like the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX56, Lexus GX 460 and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes is due to roll out the 2013 GL this September in three variants.

The advances in collision-avoidance technology haven’t entered the mass market yet but it’s sure to be headed there, judging by the response that the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class got when it was unveiled at the New York Auto Show. The crossover was equipped with radar-based Collision Prevention Assist, which runs at speeds of 20 to 155 mph. This feature, which is most often known as active cruise control, gauges the distances to the vehicles in front.

It applies the brakes when necessary to avoid collisions. Then there’s the surround-view camera, which utilizes data from four cameras in the front and rear to form a bird's-eye view of what surrounds the vehicle on the center-stack screen. With surround view, drivers can avoid low-speed accidents in city driving. Furthermore, crosswind stabilization applies brakes to stabilize the vehicle when there are strong crosswinds. Then there’s active parking assist, which steers the vehicle out of a parallel parking spot. The niche that highlights collision avoidance is clearly dominated by major suppliers that have well-funded research labs like Bosch, Continental AG, Denso, TRW, Autoliv and several other more companies.

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can immediately be recognised as a typical Mercedes-Benz SUV. The first generation is newly interpreted to be impressive with marked active strength and sporty grace. The front’s main feature design is the GL's characteristic upright radiator grille with central star and the clear, quality designed headlamps, the new signature for the Mercedes-Benz LED. Specifically, the standard Intelligent Light System headlamps on the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY impresses with its quality, exclusivity, and innovation.
