Mercedes-Benz expects GLA to gain more brand customers than CLA

Mercedes-Benz is expecting the new GLA compact crossover to capture more entry-level customers than the CLA compact sedan – as it is more functional and more spacious in the rear seats. Bart Herring, general manager of product planning for Mercedes-Benz USA, remarked that while the GLA is as fun and youth-oriented, it also features “a level of usability” that compact sedan doesn’t have.

Both vehicles are underpinned by the same platform. He noted that the compact crossover segment is one of the fastest growing in the United States, and the GLA will face the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 and offerings from volume brands. He expects half of customers from non-luxury brands like those who currently own Toyota, Nissan, Honda sedans.

Edmunds.com has said that compact SUVs -- in which according to Edmunds where compact crossovers belong -- are currently the “hottest-selling vehicles.” Edmunds remarked that the compact SUV segment is now the fourth-largest in the United States – with midsize cars, compact cars and large trucks as larger. Compact SUVs now holds 10.8 percent of the US auto market, compared to just 5.8 percent a decade ago, according to Edmunds.

Mercedes-Benz USA sees scarcity of GLA compact crossover

Mercedes-Benz USA is expecting a shortage of its GLA compact crossover when it rolls out the vehicle in September due to the segment's increasing popularity. Mercedes-Benz USA chief executive Steve Cannon remarked that supply for the GLA may be tighter than the CLA compact sedan due to the "crossover-crazy market."

Mercedes started selling the CLA in September, and its demand has been very high that supply dropped to as low as nine days -- far from the optimal 45-day supply that the carmaker set. Currently, supply for the CLA is now 30 days, Cannon said.

He said that they expect a similar situation for the GLA, saying that production constraints mean they wouldn’t get as many compact crossovers as they want. "We will not find out where the natural volume is."

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA made its stop at Brabus, just like any other vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz pimped by Brabus comes with several design features that improve the looks of the new crossover.

Available for the GLA-Class in Standard, Style and Urban specification, the new tuning programme includes a new front element that replaces the central insert of the front bumper, new attachments for the side air inlets of the front bumper, the LED lightning system that is activated with the keyless remote or by opening the door and a new rear spoiler that attaches to the hatch.

In addition, there is a Brabus rear bumper insert and a new stainless-steel sport exhaust. The design is completed by new wheel combinations that range from 18 to 21 inches in diameter. Brabus offers the well-known 21-inch Platinum Edition wheels, but if you want a smaller size, then the Monoblock F and R wheels are the right choice for you.

Last week, at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced the Concept Coupe SUV a.k.a. a concept car that previews company’s rival to the BMW X6. According to Mercedes-Benz, the new X6 rival will be assembled at its U.S. plant in Vance, Ala., starting 2015.

Thomas Weber, Mercedes’s r&d chief, said that the new Concept Coupe SUV previews a new vehicle that aims to attract customers who want a “sportily designed vehicle with a high seating position”. What’s more interesting is that the new vehicle, dubbed MLC, could be part of a new model line of so-called “on-road” SUVs.

This new line could include a coupe-styled version of the GLA compact SUV. Still, Mercedes-Benz officials didn’t want to confirm the new model, but looking at BMW, which recently introduced the X4, we believe that its German will need such vehicles in order to be the king of luxury vehicle sales.

The market launch campaign for the new Mercedes-Benz GLA is focused on the demanding and bold characteristics of the model. The campaign -- underpinned by the banner "Always restless" -- positions the new GLA as a flagship for a sporty yet versatile lifestyle. It is targeted at a modern and active target group.

During the campaign, Mercedes-Benz will have digital communications serving as the basis on which to expound other communications activities. As part of the digital campaign, an interactive web special will have new GLA showcased as the central figure of a road trip through the desert.  The user would undertake the road trip in search of the main character's lost memories.

The user then would navigate through the site by just scrolling, collecting and patching clues as to what has occurred along the way. At the end of the story, Ryan would discover with the user's help how and why he has ended up in the desert.

To prove that a cheaper and smaller sports utility vehicle like the Mercedes-Benz GLA could deliver dynamic driving and a number of technologies, the German luxury carmaker is taking the crossover in the rugged terrain around Granada, Spain. Gracing the GLA’s showcasing in Spain is Daimler chief executive Dieter Zetsche, who also directly runs Mercedes.

He remarked that the recent momentum at luxury carmaker is just the starting point for reclaiming the crown as the largest premium-car maker in the world from BMW.

"The developments from January and the last few months are definitely satisfying, but it's certainly not the final confirmation that we've done everything right," Zetsche remarked.  Zetsche has been able to steer Mercedes-Benz to faster growth in recent months than rivals BMW and Audi.

Mercedes-Benz is expecting the GLA crossover to post a stronger demand than its CLA sibling when it becomes available this fall. Steve Cannon, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz USA, remarked that such demand would mean there could be shortages of the GLA. The GLA is underpinned by the same platform that underpins the CLA that was launched in September 2013.

CLA has sold faster than Mercedes expected. "Inventory is tight," Cannon said. While Mercedes has yet to disclose the pricing of the GLA, the crossover will be positioned below the GLK crossover, which starts at $38,405, including shipping. The CLA, meanwhile, starts at $30,825 with shipping.

The GLA is expected to be priced higher than the CLA and will be several thousand dollars less than the GLK. The GLA will be initially offered with all-wheel drive and an fwd will be offered later.

It’s a year and a half before the Mercedes-Benz’s new entry-level GLA SUV goes on sale but we don’t have to wait that long to get a glimpse. It was spied while it was tested in prototype guise. The new five-seater is expected to compete with the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque. It is part of a lineup composed of five models that are built on Mercedes’ new MFA platform.

They’re meant to go up against the A-class, B-class, CLA small saloon and CLA Shooting Brake as well as attract a younger generation of customers to the Mercedes-Benz brand. From images of the disguised GLA, we see that it has the contemporary styling theme of the new A and B-class. It features a bold front end, loud swage line graphics and shallow glasshouse.

These features are put in so that it could acquire the modern-day appeal that Mercedes’ recent small cars didn’t use to have. Some of its design details include a oval grille bookmarked by curvaceous headlights, generously dimensioned wheel arches, heavily structured flanks, a curvaceous rear shoulder, an angled tailgate and a raised ride height. The new junior SUV will provide the same range of transversely mounted engines as the B-class.
