2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE is the official M-Class replacement

Mercedes-Benz just took the wraps off its all-new GLE a.k.a. the redesigned M-Class, which promises to set new benchmark with regard to emissions and drive system possible. Regarding the design, the front end of the vehicle is not new as we’ve seen the lines on the GLE Coupe.

As you can see from the photos, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE shows redesigned headlights inspired by vehicles such as the S- and C-Class models, a stylish front grille and new bumpers. Moreover, we find redesigned taillights, inspired by those found on the current version.

Meanwhile, the interior shows a larger media display which is now partially integrated into the instrument panel, centre air vents next to the display as well as outer air vents framed by silver shadow surrounds. The most interesting thing is the addition of the GLE 500 e 4Matic, Mercedes-Benz’ first plug-in hybrid SUV.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class will change name into GLE-Class starting next year

As you may know already, BMW started to overhaul its naming scheme last year when the 3-Series Coupe became the 4-Series Coupe and when the 1-Series Coupe became the 2-Series Coupe. It appears that another German car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz, will follow BMW. After it changed the CL-Class into S-Class Coupe, Mercedes-Benz decided to rename one of its most popular SUVs.

The latest reports indicate that the M-Class will change its name because the German carmaker wants a new naming structure where its SUVs and CUVs will start with G. As a result, the M-Class will become GLE-Class, while the production version of the Concept Coupe SUV will arrive as the GLE Coupe.

And the news continues because the GLK-Class will become GLC-Class because it will be based on the C-Class. In addition, the coupe version of the GLC-Class will be called GLC Coupe.

2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class gets ML400, ML250 BlueTec in the US

For the 2015MY, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV will receive two new engines, both featuring twin-turbocharging technology. First to receive a new engine is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML400 4Matic, a model that replaces the ML550.

If the ML550 was powered by a big 4.7-liter V8 engine that generated 402 hp, the new ML400 4Matic arrives with a brand new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque (same engine used by the new GL400).

Mercedes-Benz ML400 promises to return 18 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on highway and a 20 mpg combined. These numbers are achievable thanks to a seven-speed automatic transmission, which is offered as standard, but also thanks to the engine stop-start feature.

2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class gets Top Safety Pick+ award

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has been given the Top Safety Pick + award thanks to its “Good” rating in the small overlap crash test. This newest test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been a challenge that many vehicles have failed to overcome.

This rating, a first for any Mercedes model, can be applied to 2014 M-Class models made after August 2013, as Mercedes-Benz has reinforced the door sills of the M-Class to make it perform better in the small overlap test.

Apparently, these modifications were effective since the IIHS has determined that the M-Class was able to maintain the driver’s space well. This means that there’s a low risk of significant injuries. In addition, the M-Class got “Good” ratings in all other IIHS tests, including moderate overlap front, side crash test, roof strength, and head restraints and seats.

For those who want to feel even safer in a Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the German manufacturer offers the M-Class Guard, the armoured version of the popular SUV. This means that besides the impressive design, the car will also be capable to keep the bullets away from the interior.

As a result, the M-Class Guard is fitted with windows of the highest optical quality Special laminated glazing with a uniform thickness all-round, polycarbonate layer on inside to protect against shards. Moreover, the M-Class Guard comes with special steel used in the A-, B- and C- pillars and the firewall and roof.

The new M-Guard meets the requirements of protection level VR4 according to testing guidelines BRV 2009 for special-protection vehicles with bullet resistance (according to Bullet Resistant Vehicles 2009). This ballistic classification designates ballistic resistance (VR = Vehicle Resistance) in terms of the weapons and calibre: in this case, among others, Magnum .357 and .44.

Automakers have been downsizing their engines; some have even gone as far as dropping six-cylinders totally. However, Mercedes-Benz continues to offer fours and sixes in its C-Class. But then, there’s only one engine option for the 4Matic all-wheel drive in a four-door C-Class. In addition, the M-Class SUVs will receive upgraded safety technology throughout its range for 2013.

The C-Class line will get a new engine for the C300 4Matic model. The decklid numerology now only has little direct correlation to engine displacement just like majority of the existing Mercedes-Benz and BMW models. The 2012 model was powered by an engine with a literal 3.0 liters. On the other hand, the 2013 C300 has a 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers 248 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque.

This stands for an increase in output of 20 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque compared to last year’s model. The fuel economy of the new engine is much better than the smaller engine used on last year’s model. This permits the 2013 C300 to get an EPA rating of 20 city and 28 highway, compared to the 17/24 rating last year. All the V-6 C-Class models for 2013 will receive auto stop-start.

Because of a crash risk, Mercedes-Benz has announced the issuance of a recall for all-season rubber floor mats sold as accessories in model years 2012-13 M class SUVs in the U.S. The safety regulators say that the gas pedal may be stuck, raising the chances of a crash. According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Daimler AG's Mercedes said 8,675 of the floor mats have been sold in the United States.

Mercedes advised owners that until the mat has been replaced, they simply have to take away the floor mats. The recall doesn’t cover the regular floor mats that are standard with every M class vehicle.

Mercedes said that it has not received reports that the issue has resulted to injuries or accidents. A spokesman said that this part is sold as an accessory by its dealers throughout the world. However, he didn’t have a total number affected. The documents also reveal that the floor mats don’t totally conform to the contour of the floor pan.

Daimler AG has approved the expenses of over $2 billion to upgrade and expand operations at its U.S. auto assembly plant situated near Tuscaloosa, Ala. The funds will be used to start producing the Mercedes-Benz C class car and to retool the plant to build new generations of two models that are currently being produced in this plant: the Mercedes-Benz R-class crossover and G-class SUV. With the end of Lexus’ 11-year reign, Mercedes and BMW are battling it out to get the title of top-selling luxury brand in the U.S.

Daimler has yet to specify the time periods that the investment will cover or if has more projects to fund. In late 2009, Daimler said that this plant will be where C-class production will start in 2014. Daimler revealed the investment amount after a recent Job 1 plant celebration that launched the production of the new-generation Mercedes M class in the plant.

When the Tuscaloosa plant opened in February 1997, it had received a $350 million manufacturing investment. It aimed to put Mercedes-Benz retailers into a booming SUV market with the M class.

Mercedes-Benz is currently developing the new Popemobile that would be based on a M-class SUV and will be fitted with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It’s expected to have enough power so that it could run more than 16 miles at low cruising speeds, enabling the faithful to view the pontiff as he passes by.

But at higher speeds, the petrol engine will take over. The German business paper Wirtschaftswoche revealed that the pope initially favored an all-electric car but the plan was changed since a battery won’t have the power and speed required to propel the five-ton vehicle during an emergency.

Mercedes has not provided many details about this project. In fact, a source would only say that the vehicle is being developed "on behalf of customers in the Vatican.” Citing confidentiality, Rob Halloway, public relations manager for Mercedes Benz cars, said that it cannot comment on a Papal vehicle.
