Mercedes-Benz’ new SL will be developed alongside the next AMG GT

At one point, the Mercedes-Benz SL was at the peak of the automaker’s lineup, but this model has lost its appeal after the Mercedes introduced newer vehicles like the AMG GT Roadster, with the latter boasting a more interesting style. Because of this, SL sales have decreased over the past few years, and now the company is trying their best to reverse this by developing a new model that will be introduced in 2021.

For a couple of months now, Mercedes-Benz has been quiet about this model. But according to Automobile, this is because the automaker is debating whether or not the next generation model should just transition into an AMG exclusive vehicle. If they decide to push through with this, that will be a huge change for them. However, the publication says that because it will be developed alongside the next-generation AMG GT that is scheduled to come out in 2022, it kind of makes sense too.

The next generation SL will be sportier than its predecessor, which really should not come as a surprise despite its AMG origins. This is because it will adopt an aluminum intensive design, together with a rear wheel steering and active stabilizer bars. Customers will also have an option to add an air suspension and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Mercedes-Benz introduces SL designo Edition and SLC RedArt Edition for next season

Special edition models come in different seasons for several reasons. But just the same, they will definitely arrive sooner or later. Less than two months before spring begins in Europe, Mercedes-Benz lifted the veil off its two special edition drop top models --- the SL designo and SLC RedArt Edition roadsters.

With regards to the price range, the SLC 180 RedArt Edition is priced at 38,800+ euros while the standard SLC 180 is more or less at 34,900+ euros. The RedArt and designo Editions are already available for orders while both packages will be launched in Europe this coming April.

All in all, expect to pay a higher price when buying the SL roadster. In Europe, the standard SL can be bought for 99,000+ euros while the designo Edition would cost over 117,100+ euros.

2019 Mercedes-Benz SL will share platform with the AMG GT

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL is reportedly to share the same platform with an Mercedes-AMG GT. Not exactly the one you’ve seen on the photos that have previously surfaced on the Internet. Speculations developed after a supposedly shorter SL Coupe was caught being tested at the Green Hell several weeks ago. But recent reports suggest otherwise.

Autocar says that Mercedes-Benz is now considering an AMG GT platform and will likely come with four types of engines. It is also believed that the SL65 and SL600’s V12 engines may no longer be included in their options. This is probably because of the stricter guidelines with regard to emissions.

Instead, there’s going to be a choice between the E63’s 603hp 5.5 litre V8 twin turbocharger, a couple of turbocharged 6-cylinders with either 450hp or 402 hp and a 470hp 4.0 litre V8.

Mercedes-Benz recently announced that orders for the new SL, priced at £73,805 will be accepted by all Mercedes-Benz retailers. Buyers may choose from the four variants of the Mercedes-Benz SL range, each assigned with a different petrol engine: SL 400 – features a 4.0 litre V6 engine producing 367 HP (which is 34 HP more than the predecessor), pushing the car to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, with CO2 emissions at 175g/km; SL 500 – features a 4.6 litre V8 engine that produces 455 HP and 0 to 62 mph acceleration in 4.3 seconds, with CO2 emission at 205g/km; Mercedes-AMG SL 63 - equipped with a 5.5 litre V8 engine giving an output of 585 HP and a 0 – 62mph acceleration time of 4.1 seconds, with CO2 at 234g/km; SL 65 - has a 6.0 litre V12 engine giving an astounding 630 HP enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 62 in 4.0 seconds. CO2 emission is at 279g/km.

The SL 400 and SL 500 variant come with a standard Mercedes-Benz 9G-TRONIC PLUS automatic gearbox which replaces the 7G-TRONIC PLUS of its predecessor. On the other hand, an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed automatic is the standard for the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 while an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic gearbox comes as standard for the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 variant.

Standards for the four Variants: SL 400 and SL 500 – standard features for these two variants include 18-inch alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay, MAGIC VISION CONTROL, LED Intelligent Light System with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, Active Brake Assist, COMAND Online, DYNAMIC SELECT, Attention Assist, Parking Pilot, and Active Bonnet.

In order to celebrate its triumph in the Formula 1 World Championship, Mercedes-Benz introduced two exclusive models of the SL 63 AMG co-created with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Production will be limited to just 19 units of each model and as expected each vehicle will be one-of-a-kind and dedicated to one of the 19 Formula 1 race tracks used this year.

The model co-created with Lewis Hamilton features a special Night Black Magno paint finish found on the detachable parts such as the exterior mirrors, door handles and rims, while the gold-coloured lettering, fins and stripes on the rear bumper complete the design.

In addition, the tailpipe trim is finished in chromed black. The interior is dominated by black and gold, featuring stylish details such as gold-coloured stitching on the seats wrapped in black nappa leather, instrument panel and centre console, with the trim parts featuring gold colour.

Back in April, Mercedes-Benz introduced in Europe the new SL400, a new model powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine developing 333 hp (245 kW) at 5,250 to 6,000 rpm and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque at 1,600 to 4,000 rpm. Today, we found out thanks to Autoblog that the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 available also in the United States and has a starting price of $84,000 excluding the $925 destination charge.

We also observed that the US-spec SL400 comes with 329 hp, but it is still a fast car as it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.1 seconds. So, if you don’t want the SL550, which comes with a 4.7-liter biturbo V8 and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds, the SL400 could be the perfect choices.

Also the $22,900 difference looks pretty interesting as the SL500 is priced at $106,900 excluding the $925 destination charge of course.

The Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster family has just received a new member: ladies and gentlemen, this is the SL400. Comparing it with its predecessor, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL400 is not powered by a naturally aspirated engine, as it comes with a six-cylinder unit fitted with two turbochargers. For those who don’t know, the SL400 actually replaces the SL350, which is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine.

The new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine found on the SL400 generates 333 hp (245 kW) at 5250 to 6000 rpm and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque at 1600 to 4000 rpm. Despite the fact that it is smaller than its predecessor, the power of 3.0-liter V6 engine has risen by 27 hp (20 kW). Torque was also increased by 110 Nm and as we said is available in the engine speed range of 1600 to 4000 rpm.

The engine can push the SL400 from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph. Fuel consumption is 7.3 l/100 km, which translates into CO2 emissions of 172 g/km. Just like all BlueDIRECT petrol engines, the biturbo V6 works with a direct injection system with spray-guided combustion and Mercedes-Benz was the first carmaker to offer it in series production.

If you consider that the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is not too attractive, the German manufacturer has just unveiled the SL 2LOOK Edition at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. This new edition is offerd with a standard combination of a light-coloured paint finish, such as designo magno cashmere white, designo diamond white bright, tenorite grey or iridium silver, with a vario-roof in high-gloss black.

Still, the roof can be painted in he vehicle’s body colour. The spectrum of alternative colours for the special model comprises black, obsidian black and magnetite black. Mercedes-Benz offers as standard the 19-inch high-sheen multi-spoke light-alloy wheels or the optional 19-inch AMG 7-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels are available painted in high-gloss black featuring a high-sheen finish.

Same theme is continued inside where the SL comes with a sporty longitudinal piping design in black nappa leather contrast with inserts in designo nappa leather in platinum white pearl. The door armrests and the centre armrest features contrasting designo platinum white pearl.

Back in 2008, we saw the first Coupetorino based on the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class and honestly we were speechless and we did like the idea of a shooting brake variant of the well-known coupe-cabriolet. Due to the fact that Mercedes-Benz rolled off a new generation of the SL, Italian design house StudioTorino revealed the Coupetorino 2013, a shooting brake version of the new SL.

The new car was designed by six students - Michele Bavaro, Bruno Arena, Dario Pellegrino, Stefano Manini, Riccardo Luigi Cascone, Cristiano Zanot – in collaboration with Steffen Koehl from Global Advance Design Mercedes-Benz. The students made a 1:4 scale model of the vehicle but this is not just a simple design, as they had to take into account production costs.

Although we don’t have any details regarding the engine, we believe that the 4.6-liter V8 engine found on the SL550 would be the perfect choice as it delivers 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Using a 7-speed Driver-Adaptive automatic transmission, the SL550 is able to zoom from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph or 250 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz decided to give some small cosmetic tweaks to the SL roadster and according to the official press release all these changes will be incorporated from June. The most significant changes will be seen on the SL350 and the SL500, because these models will now be sold as AMG Sport models.

As expected, the AMG Sport Pack consists of 19-inch, five-spoke AMG wheels, lowered suspension (10 mm) with revised dampers, a new AMG bodykit and new brake calipers. Inside, the vehicle will get a new steering wheel, perforated leather, AMG floor mats as well as Platinum White Pearl stitching. The new SL will also receive a new colour, Hyacinth Red, while the Polar White colour is offered as standard.

The new AMG Sport models will also be cheaper, despite the fact that they offer additional equipment. Moreover, the SL63 AMG will receive electric glass sunroof and Parktronic system. The SL65 AMG will not receive any changes. The SL350 AMG Sport will cost £69,960, while the SL500 AMG Sport will be available for £79,970. The SL63 AMG will cost £110,785.

For the 2013 Geneva Auto Show, Brabus will be presenting the 800 Roadster based on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG. Powering the standard variant is an AMG V12 6.0-liter bi-turbo engine with an output of 630 HP (463 kW) and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. Its engine has been tweaked to have an output of 800 HP (588 kW) and 1,047 lb-ft (1,420 Nm) of torque that will be limited to 811 lb-ft (1,100 Nm).

The stock model can make the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 4 seconds but the modified variant can do so in 3.7 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h). Meanwhile, the regular model has a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Brabus also gives this vehicle an aerodynamic body kit that was developed in the wind tunnel.

All of its parts are made of carbon fiber and it can also come with a matte or a glossy finish in the body's color. Brabus supplies 20-inch alloys with 255/30 ZR20 and 305/25 ZR20 (front/rear) high-performance tires.

Global deliveries of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG will start within the next few days. The range-topping exclusive V12 Roadster, which can deliver up to 463 kW (630 hp) and a torque of 1000 Nm, can also now be test-driven. Customers can choose not to sign up for the traditional vehicle delivery method at dealerships and authorised agents of Mercedes-Benz.

They may receive their SL 65 AMG direct from the AMG Customer Center in Affalterbach. The benefit of this method is that customers get an exclusive insight into the world of AMG. They also get to experience AMG’s outstanding customer care. At the center, a personal customer service attendant will greet them and they will be accommodated in the AMG Private Lounge which was opened in 2011.

The customers will then receive a tour of the plant. They will visit the AMG Performance Studio, where individual and one-off AMG vehicles are created and built by hand in few numbers. At the AMG engine production facility, customers get the chance to talk to engineers who built the V12 engine in their SL 65 AMG by hand, in keeping with the traditional philosophy of "one man, one engine.” Customers will get the new SL 65 AMG in the new 360 m2 delivery hall.

Mercedes-Benz has disclosed the official prices for the sixth generation of its SL-Class Roadster, the first of which will arrive in the United Kingdom next month. The first ones to arrive on British soil are the SL 350, having an on-the-road price of £72,495, and the SL 500 at £83,445 OTR. The SL 350 and SL 500 will be followed by two models, the SL 63 AMG and the SL 65 AMG, later this year.

 Mercedes-Benz boasts of the SL as lighter, sportier, leaner and more efficient, thanks to its superb specs.  The new SL is crafted almost entirely of aluminium, making it as light as possible. The SL is also powered by Mercedes-Benz BlueDIRECT direct-injection engines, which fuel efficiency has improved by up to 30 percent compared with the previous model, while emitting less carbon dioxide. 

In particular, the SL 350 is powered by a BlueDIRECT 3.5-litre V6 engine that provides up to 306 hp of output at 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm of torque at 3,500 to 5,250 rpm.

Collectors of high-grade miniatures of the Mercedes-Benz SL are getting excited about the new addition to the collection -- the roadster. The 1:87, 1:43 and 1:18 scale models are realistically reproduced, even in the original paintwork. Mercedes-AMG has revealed the new 2013 SL65 AMG as it enters the roadster season this year. The vehicle has a distinctively dynamic style and follows the latest introduction of the SL 63 AMG. The model is equipped with the AMG 6-liter V12 "biturbo" (twin-turbocharged) engine, which produces an output of as much as 630 hp and torque of at most 1000 newton meters.

With these features, the automobile boasts of remarkable performance, naturally superior dynamics and impressive power delivery. An all-aluminum bodyshell is used in the new SL 65 AMG, just like the SLS AMG super sports automobile, resulting to a radical decrease in weight.

The new Mercedes-Benz SL – the most aerodynamically efficient sports vehicle – is now on sale. It has a cd of 0.27 for the 350. Not since the 1959 Porsche 356A has there been a sports vehicle as aerodynamic as this.  Dr Teddy Woll, a Mercedes-Benz aerodynamicist, disclosed that the Porsche had a drag coefficient of 0.29.

He added that over the last 50 years, this trend has been for higher drag as engine and wheels became larger. With the new SL, the trend has been reversed. The B-class with an eco package has an even lower coefficient, being at 0.24. However, reducing a drag is a constant struggle.

The industry, at best, has only paid lip service to aerodynamic efficiency, if not largely ignored, for many years. However, the need for even lower carbon dioxide emissions is giving new thrust for the works of the aerodynamicist.
