2018 MG XS compact SUV is headed to the UK this winter

Now owned by Chinese carmaker SAIC Motor, British auto company MG is introducing its latest sports utility vehicle in the United Kingdom – the new MG XS. A little brother of the MG GS, the new MG GS compact SUV will go on sale in the UK in winter 2017, months after it was unveiled at recently concluded London Motor Show.

In case you missed it, MG is launching a new baby SUV in China, the new MG ZS. The MG XS is basically a rebadged version of the ZS, although it is expected that some changes would be made – mostly in the area of mechanicals and in the cabin – to allow this baby SUV to comply with regulations and be marketed in the UK. It will compete against the likes of Nissan Juke, SsangYong Tivoli, Dacia Duster and Suzuki Vitara.

MG – through its parent SAIC – is already selling the ZS in China. The new MG ZS is powered by 1.0 liter three-cylinder turbo engine that provides 123 bhp of max output and 125 lb.-ft. (175 Nm) of peak torque. This amount of power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, allowing the MG ZS to sprint from standstill to 62 mph is just 9.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 120 mph. Weighing 1,290 kilograms, the new MG ZS measures 4,313 mm in length, 1,809 mm in height and 1,648 mm in width.

MG returns with the E-Motion Concept

MG surprises us at the 2017 Auto Shanghai with its brand new concept: the E-Motion. This electric grand tourer is comparable to the likes of the hybrid models from Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Aston Martin. The automaker goes back to its sports car roots with this concept. It is shaped like a coupe but has an electric powertrain that packs some really impressive numbers.

The E-Motion has an eye-catching design. It has a grille similar to that of a Mercedes’ “diamond” grille, with a pair of sleek headlights that reminds us of those on current Mazda models - which are supposed to be inspired by the London Eye. As you look at the sides, you might get glimpses of a classic Aston Martin. Meanwhile, vertical taillights extend to the fenders, and a prominent spoiler lip are found on the rear end. Moreover, this concept features butterfly doors, and massive panoramic glass roof from the front all the way to the rear end, following its sloped roofline. It also comes with a huge diffuser and flush door handles. Overall, the car has a sporty appearance.

Inside, the cabin can accommodate four passengers. A fully digital instrument cluster is installed for the driver, with touch sensitive controls. Rotary knobs are built into the air vents for temperature control, like the Audi TT. Even the back passengers get their own touch-operated console.

Photos of MG E-Motion Concept leaked ahead of Shanghai debut

Despite the MG E-Motion Concept set to be unveiled in a few days at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, it appears that the internet once again managed to get the upper hand. Albeit rather grainy, a set of official images showing MG’s newest four-seater coupe has been released on the World Wide Web.

Images show that the exterior appears to have a rather stylish design especially with the use of butterfly doors and a more pronounced grille in the front. Clearly inspired from that of Mercedes-Benz, the grille carries on its center the MG badge and based on the photos, appears to light up mainly due to LEDs. At the top portion and placed at the corner of the grille are the sleek headlights which look similar to the ones on Mazda. Still, the headlights give the vehicle a more high-tech look and this feel is enhanced further by having cameras instead of the usual door mirrors.

Fitted to it are the alloy two-tone wheels and if we look up, we see the thick side skirts above which is the panoramic roof. Going to the rear, viewers will likely be surprised to see what may be the biggest diffusers placed in a car. Still on this section, there are the sweptback taillights with a spoiler lip cleanly integrated. Much like the bumper in the front, the rear bumper also has the “E-Motion” lettering placed on it. This serves two purposes with the first being that it emphasizes the name of this mode. The second is that it drives home the point that the model comes with an all-electric powertrain.

The new MG3 has earned a class leading Group 4E insurance rating. The rating is good news to young drivers who find the cost of car insurance prohibitively high. The fun-to-drive and stylish MG3 will be available for sale in mid-September and carmaker is now taking pre-order deposits. Despite the low insurance rating, the new MG3 still boasts of having 106PS in power output, and yet is less expensive than similarly powered cars.

Likewise the MG3’s 106PS power output is more powerful than rival cars could offer. The MG3 3TIME entry model carries a starting price of just £8,399, while the top-of-the-range MG3 3STYLE has a tag of £9,999. The figures for the MG3 show that offers better specs than models in the same insurance group. For instance, 1.2-litre Hyundai i20 ‘Classic’ offers just 84PS and yet has a price of £9,995. The 1.2-litre VW Polo ‘S’ delivers just 60PS and costs significantly higher at £11,395.

On the other hand, the 1.0-liter Toyota Yaris ‘T2’ and ‘TR’ models provide 69PS and have starting price of £10,695. Likewise, new MG3 is in a lower insurance group than similarly powered cars like Vauxhall Corsa models which are in Groups 8 and 9, and many VW Polo models that are in Group 9.

MG disclosed that its much awaited MG3 supermini will have starting tag of £8,399 and a finish price of £9,999. Its affordability is the not the only good thing about the MG3 but likewise its predicted insurance group rating of just 4E, which is less than half those of equivalent competitor products. Despite its low price, the MG3 supermini still sports a good level of specification, either for safety or practicality.

All MG3 models feature as standard signature front LED lights and electronic hill hold. All except for the base model boast of a high quality DAB audio system. The MG3’s interior features one of the most spacious cabins in the supermini class. The supermini boasts of six airbags, electronic stability control, corner brake control and traction control -- all of these latest technology safety equipment come as standard.

Providing perhaps the greatest appeal for the MG3 is the capacity given to buyers to customize their own supermini. Sheffield will become the first city in the United Kingdom to have two new MG dealerships. Grant & McAllin in Rother Valley Way, Holbrook, will cover the south side of Sheffield while Eric Stead (Garages) Ltd in Ecclesfield will cover the north of the city. The dealerships are set to open by the end of August, ahead of the rollout of the new MG3 supermini.

MG is aiming to open six more dealerships in key cities across the UK by the end of 2013. MG is currently in talks with a number of several other prospective dealers in major cities and towns in the UK. Eric Stead (Garages) was a former MG Rover outlet and has continued to have a new, unregistered MG on display, which is one of the last MGB GTs to be produced.

Eric Stead (Garages) managing director Trevor Stead remarked that MG has always been an important brand for the dealership, noting that it is “steeped in history and heritage.” He said that winning the MG franchise was “one of the proudest and most exciting days of [his] life.”

MG plans to build a new sports car that it may produce at its Longbridge facility, according to Autocar. But this car isn’t expected to enter production within five years. It’s likely to come after the launch of new mass market products like a rival to the Nissan Qashqai. This model was previewed as the Concept CS at the Shanghai Motor Show.

MG’s dramatically stylised small SUV comparable to the Nissan Juke is also slated to arrive before this sports car. Guy Jones, MG UK’s head of sales and marketing, said that the company requires a lineup of volume products before it could offer a sports car. He confirmed that this roadster is included in the product plan but that before it could be made available, MG will offer a range of mainstream, volume-selling products.

He also said that it has received pressure from several executives within the Chinese SAIC-owned company to use a sports car for its relaunch but MG chose not to give in to the temptation. He said that it would have been nice to generate some publicity but then, it would go against its strategy to cement MG’s image as a producer of small, niche, affordable sports cars.

Set to go on sale in the UK this summer, the European version of the MG3 supermini was recently unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show. The MG3 is much more stylised than the car’s Chinese version as it is more similar to the appearance of the critically praised MG Zero concept on which it is based. MG UK sales and marketing boss Guy Jones said that the company considered it vital for the design to be more obvious.

He said that this model is likely to go up against the Vauxhall Adam, Citroen DS3 and Mini. There will be more "substantial" interior and exterior customisation options available to the buyers. Jones didn’t announce the car’s pricing yet but sources said that it will cost from about £10,000 to £16,000.

It will be offered as a five-door vehicle and will exclusively come with the company’s 104bhp, four cylinder petrol engine and five-speed manual from the start. It will be offered with three trim levels: TS1, TS2 and TS3.

The Nissan Juke-rivalling SUV from MG dubbed as the MG CS Concept has been unveiled. The automaker has confirmed that this model will enter production and that it will be offered worldwide. It’s sure to arrive at UK dealerships. A team headed by Anthony Williams-Kenny, the company’s global design director, headed the team that designed this concept.

MG asserts that this vehicle features British design flair but at the same time, it shows off the sporting DNA of MG. The concept’s technical details or specifications have yet to be unveiled but it’s expected to be built on the MG3 platform. It’s estimated to be launched sometime in 2014 to allow MG to take advantage of the surge in compact SUV sales.

This segment is dominated by the Juke but MG’s model will also be competing with the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008 and the rumoured Land Rover baby SUV. MG claims that the production car will have an appearance that’s very similar to the CS concept. However, the company is known for toning down styling when its cars enter production.

Needing a D-sector car for your fleet or for your company? Then why not consider the diesel-powered versions of the MG6, which has been quite an attraction among fleet buyers and company car drivers. The MG6 DTi-TECH diesel is on top of many car-to-consider lists for 2013, given its class-leading insurance group ratings, extremely low BiK P11D prices and low servicing and repair costs.

With over half of D-sector cars sold in the UK being diesel-powered, MG expects to dispose 65 percent of the new MG6 DTi-TECH diesels in the fleet and business sectors. Despite having the interior space and comforts of a D-sector car, the MG6 has the dynamic agility of a smaller C-sector model. For over three years, MG expects the new MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette DTi-TECH diesels to be among the most economic for several company car drivers to run.

P11D prices for the MG6 DTi-TECH is at £16,820 for the GT in S trim; £18,020 for the GT in SE trim; £20,020 for the GT in TSE trim and the Magnette. The pricing for the new diesel MGs places the vehicles in the middle of the cutthroat car price structure. But what make MG’s vehicles more attractive than their rivals in the business sector is their very high levels of standard specification.

At the Beijing Motor Show, the MG Icon Concept vehicle was awarded the prominent 'Best Concept' title, a major design award and one of the most sought-after recognition at the international car show calendar. The MG Icon bested the Lamborghini Urus, Honda Concept C and Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe. Autoweek, one of the leading vehicle magazines in the United States, announced the awards. It will present an engraved trophy to MG at a later date. Autoweek's German editor Greg Kable, who is also a highly acclaimed motoring journalist worldwide, commented that the Icon continues the resurrection of MG under parent company SAIC Motor.

It brings "newly interpreted heritage style" to the ranks of compact SUVs in a package "that will see it compete directly against the likes of" the MINI Countryman and Nissan Juke, he added. There were no announced plans yet regarding the production of the MG Icon, which is the first SUV concept that MG made. The Icon was developed by the MG global design team under the leadership of British director Anthony Williams-Kenny.

It is inspired by some of the renowned MG models of the past such as the MGB GT and the MGA. Williams-Kenny commented that it is a "great honour" to win the "very important award," especially with the fact that the MG Icon beat "so many other famous brands." He added that the judges "obviously shared our enthusiasm and vision for MG."  Williams-Kenny has recently been promoted to his new position as SAIC Design's Global Director. Moreover, he had led the design team responsible for the award-winning MG6 production vehicle.

MG has presented a small SUV with suicide door at the Beijing Motor Show. This little concept car – dubbed the Icon -- demonstrates MG’s direction and styling, according to design chief Tony Williams. This car is less than 4m long and is built on the MG3's B platform. Williams is British but is currently based in Shanghai.

He is the leader of MG’s design team as well as of sister brand Roewe. He has a team based in the UK and in China that is composed of 130 members. He said that MG is challenging that brand’s limits. In particular, he said that he prefers a modern look instead of a retro or a pastiche which is what tends to happen when you work with a legendary brand with a long history.

He said that the company will be monitoring the reaction of the visitors at this show and in other places where the concept will be shown. He said that for now, this is just a concept but what is certain is that some aspects of its design will be used in future products. The front of the Icon has a recognizable MG appearance but the suicide doors are undoubtedly its most striking feature.

Those who have recently bought the MG6 are likely to be pleased with the improved production methods that were used. In particular, the driver gets better fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions and lower road tax. And because of these new systems, the prices of the all MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette models are now lower.

Most of the production improvements were carried out at MG Motor UK’s factory in Birmingham where final assembly and quality sign-off of the MG6 range is accomplished. The MG Birmingham site has two centres of excellence where 300 designers and engineers have been working to make these cars. The CO2 emission levels of the latest 2012 model year cars have decreased from 184g/km to 174g/km, cutting the Vehicle Excise Duty by one band.

This results to savings of £50 on the road tax for the first year and then it will just be £20 a year after that. The fuel economy rating is improved with the urban cycle going up from 26.1mpg to 27.7mpg (+1.6mpg). The extra urban cycle gets a boost from 45.2mpg to 48.7mpg (+3.5mpg) while the combined figure goes up from 35.6mpg to 37.7mpg (+2.1mpg). With these improvements in VED figures, there is a £40 reduction in the recommended-on-the-road prices for all MG6 models.

Consumers who are aching to acquire one of the entry-level MG6 models could now get one from dealers on a zero percent deal under MG’s finance scheme. The financing package allows MG customers to get an MG6 by choosing one of the payment options offered by the company. Under the finance scheme, a customer who wants to acquire a S-trimmed MG6 GT model could deposit any amount they want, as long as it is equivalent or more than the floor deposit of 40% of the £15,455 on-the-road price.

This means that if a customer deposits a down-payment of 50% of the on-the-road price, he would pay a little as £128.79 monthly over 60 months. The customer could also settle the balance on any deals at an earlier time without paying any penalty.

Aside from the zero percent deals on S-trimmed MG6 GT models, there’s also a finance package with a 3.7 percent APR scheme for all MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette models, with the customer shelling out a 10 percent first-time deposit, equivalent to £1,544.50, and £249 succeeding monthly payments for 60 months. The MG finance scheme works by lowering the monthly repayment amounts if the customer downs higher deposits.

As excitement for the arrival of the MG heats up, official images of the five-door hatchback have been released recently. The MG5 will be launched in the UK market 18 months from now and will be offered in China very soon. From these pictures, we see that the C-segment-sized hatchback is equipped with angular headlights and it even has prominent creases along the bonnet and front wings.

The model intended for China will be powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine that delivers about 105bhp. European models will be offered with a lineup of engines, which is expected to have at least one diesel unit. There were speculations that it would be available with a range of downsized petrol engines with capacities between 1.0 and 1.5-litres.

Its power outputs range from 115bhp to 162bhp. Both MG chief Dave Lindley and head of design Tony Williams-Kenny are directly involved with the European development program.
