Jaguar relives Mille Miglia 2013 through online short film

Jaguar has released a new short film that highlights the carmaker’s high-profile participation in the Mille Miglia 2013, which is considered as the ‘The World’s Most Beautiful Race.’ The carmaker has invited high-profile individuals to drive some of its Jaguar Heritage Racing cars as they participate in the 1,000-mile drive event across Italy.

Riding three examples of the Jaguar XK120 were the driver pairings of Sir Chris Hoy and Andy Wallace; Daniel Day Lewis and Jim Gianopulos and David Gandy and Yasmin Le Bon. The pairs were joined by another three high-profile pairs riding three C-Type sports cars -- Jaguar Regional Director for Europe Bernard Kuhnt and actress Hannah Herzsprung; Alex Buncombe and Chris Harris; and Salvatore Ferragamo Jr. and Michael Quinn, who is a grandson of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons.

The Jaguar cavalcade represents only a tiny fraction of the total number of classic race and road cars participating in the annual Mille Miglia event. In fact, this year’s race has attracted over 400 classic cars. This record number of entries means the Jaguar drivers were racing against some of the most significant sports cars ever built.

Bentley to field two Supercharged Blowers to 2013 Mille Miglia

Bentley Motors will be fielding two 4.5-liter Supercharged ‘Blowers’ to the 2013 edition of the classic car race Mille Miglia. Bentley’s Mille Miglia lineup includes a 1930 Le Mans race car belonging to Captain Tim Birkin of the famous Bentley Boys and a company demonstration Blower that remains in excellent condition even after around 90 years on the road.

Bentley Motors brought the ‘No. 2 Team Car’ in 2000 and has fielded it on campaigns across the world since then. Birkin’s Blower is widely known for its epic battle with a 7-liter supercharged ‘Kompressor’ Mercedes at Le Mans in 1930. The duel’s highlight was when Birkin placed his off-side wheels on the grass to pass his Mercedes rival Rudolf Caracciola at 120mph. One of the Blower’s rear tire treads was immediately thrown off, but Birkin somehow went on to set the fastest lap.

Birkin’s Le Mans campaign ended just after 82 laps, but the pressure he applied against his opponent allowed fellow Bentley Boys Woolf Barnato and Glenn Kidston to secure victory in their Bentley Speed Six. Richard Charlesworth, Bentley’s Director of Royal and VIP Relations, helped prepare the Le Mans 1930 Blower for its third Mille Miglia challenge at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe. He remarked that the Blower was “a fantastic car to drive and remains extremely rapid as well.” He added that they take great pride in ensuring that all the cars Bentley owns continue to regularly compete, and are not museum exhibits.

Jaguar Heritage Racing team for 2013 Mille Miglia unveiled

Jaguar has enlisted a distinct unique team of drivers for its Jaguar Heritage Racing entry for the 2013 Mille Miglia classic car tour. Piloting examples of Jaguar C-Type and XK120 heritage race cars are Le Mans 24 Hours race winner Andy Wallace, six-time Olympic cycling Champion Sir Chris Hoy, global supermodel David Gandy, German actress Hannah Herzsprung, chairman & chief executive of 20th Century Fox Jim Gianopulos, Italian Salvatore Ferragamo Jr. and fashion legend Yasmin Le Bon.

Joining them is Michael Quinn, grandson of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons.  They will be led by Jaguar Heritage Racing's multiple race winner Alex Buncombe. Motoring journalist Chris Harris will link up for the classic car tour in a Jaguar C-Type once owned by Juan Manuel Fangio, a former Formula 1 Champion.

Jaguar first joined the Mille Miglia classic motorsport in 1952, fielding a C-Type sports car piloted by Jaguar Chief Development Engineer Norman Dewis and Formula 1 legend Sir Stirling Moss. Jaguar’s classic car line-up -- three C-Type race cars and three XK120s -- will be followed on the majority of the driving route by five new Jaguar F-TYPE sports cars. A driver training with Dewis and some members of the 2013 Jaguar Heritage Racing team at Goodwood Motor Circuit can be viewed in the video below.
