Lease price of the Mini E set at $850 per month

Car owners looking to own of the limited 500 Mini E electric vehicles that are going towards production in California will have to pay a high price for the opportunity. Aside from the restricted volume production, the technology itself is revolutionary, and even the $850 monthly pricing is insufficient to cover the actual costs of the cars' development and manufacture.

Even as raw value may not be a highlight in the Mini E, at least at this early phase in its lifecycle, the car does provide a robust performance package for a multi-purpose EV.

With an estimated range of 150mi (240km) on a 2.5-hour charge, add to that a peppy acceleration and highway-speed capability, the Mini E should prove a reasonable companion. Fuel savings will offset the lease price to a degree, although the latest drop in gasoline prices in the U.S. has lessened that advantage to some extent.

In the US, the engine of choice is still the gasoline and diesel powerplants have not succeeded in supplanting them due partly to the high cost of diesel fuel and diesel engines and also because of a national memory of diesels 30 years ago.

However, Mini believes that an less expensive small, sporty and efficient diesel may change American minds in this regard especially those who are in larger cities.

However, Mini thinks this will only make financial sense in either 2010 or 2011 and even then nothing is still certain.

Reports have been emerging saying that the German carmaker BMW is seriously contemplating a new extremely high-end Mini that will be re-trimmed by the Goodwood facility of Rolls-Royce. Further reports say that the project is about to be approved. The planned Rolls-Royce-trimmed Mini is not a one-off but a recent test car designed to be an established premium custom variant of the Mini.

Customers will be provided an opportunity to select their own interior trim and dashboard elements inside the Rolls Royce factory after which they can receive the completed customized car. The planned high-end Mini demonstrates further that the German carmaker is motivated by the original Mini in its aim to expand the Mini brand.

In the early 60s, Mini Coopers with redesigned interiors and very high standards of trim became widely accepted and were owned by celebrities of the highest caliber such as all four of the Beatles. Automotive history states that the popularity of the first high-end coachbuilt Mini was ordered in 1963 by Peter Sellers.

It comes as a surprise that the main complaint of Mini E drivers is due not to the range but with the size of the battery pack. This is of course, aside from the complaints over the range meter that becomes problematic in cold weather. The University of California-Davis asked 57 Mini E drivers about their experiences in using the electric Mini in everyday life.

Average trip length is recorded to be about 30 miles, which fits in perfectly with the car's range.

About 45% of those surveyed reported that a "typical" range from a single charge was 100 miles. Nonetheless, BMW says that most reports indicate range in "normal" conditions is between 70 and 100 miles.

Customer testing for the electric version of the MINI is doing quite well. Many of those who leased the cars tell BMW that they want to keep the car when the leasing program is finished.

In an interview with Just-Auto, BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer said that this trial will be followed next year with a customer test fleet based on the current study with the BMW Concept ActiveE, which will be produced at the Leipzig plant.

Earlier this year, BMW announced the initial results of the performances of the MINI E in the US. BMW found out that the car has a range of about 100 miles, which is certainly sufficient for most people's daily requirements.

Jager said that the power of the electric motor has "an incredible effect," since its full reserves of torques can be accessed at any time. He also applauds the silence from the drivetrain, stating that it is the "cleanest and quietest race lap"¹ he has ever driven.

Before the MINI E could hit the circuit, BMW had to complete extensive operations. To ensure optimum performance and safety on the track, the MINI E was given a special lightweight body and a roll cage.
