Mitsubishi expects higher sales in Europe for plug-in hybrid of next ASX

Mitsubishi is expecting sales of a plug-in hybrid version of the next ASX compact SUV to surpass the success of the gasoline and diesel variants in Europe, President Osamu Masuko told Automotive News Europe at the Tokyo Auto Show. Mitsubishi is selling the ASX as the RVR in Japan and Outlander Sport in North America.

Mitsubishi is expected to introduce the ASX successor with a plug-in hybrid variant within three years. At the show, Mitsubishi unveiled the XR-PHEV concept that previews the next ASX.

Masuko remarked that the mainstream variant in mature markets such as Japan and Europe will be the plug-in hybrid version. The vehicle will be the carmaker's second plug-in hybrid after the Outlander, which is already being sold in some markets in Europe.

Diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz G-Class will soon be available in Europe

Right now, if you check the Mercedes-Benz G Class configurator online, you will be given two options, namely the G500 and the G63. The G500 first came out in January with the launch of the W464 at NAIAS in Detroit, and the G63 made its first appearance in Geneva a few weeks after the first one. For those of you who are looking for a more low end torque, then you will need to wait until the end of the year to place an order for a diesel powered G in Europe.

If you speak to the guys behind the Mercedes-Benz Passion Blog, they will tell you that the diesel G-Class that takes the shape of the G350d 4Matic model will be available in Germany by December. At the same time, production will begin during this time but deliveries will not begin until March 2019 at the earliest. The report then says that dealers will get the first diesel models for potential clients to try out sometime in spring of next year.

You might be wondering what the original identity of the diesel engine is. Well, it is actually the OM 656 that we saw last year together with the S-Class facelift. This was eventually launched in other models like the CLS. In the S350d sedan, it pumps out 286 horsepower (210 kilowatts) and 600 Newton metres (443 pound feet) of torque. Moving on to the S400d, it has a little more output, at 340 horsepower (250 kilowatts) and 700 Newton metres (516 pound feet) of torque.

Facelifted VW Passat will be available in Europe this year

Earlier this week, we talked about Volkswagen’s plans to halt the production of the US spec Passat for a few weeks during spring. And now, we just learned new things about its European counterpart. The Wolfsburg based manufacturer said that the Euro spec Passat will be out in the market very soon, though they did not give a particular date.

Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Volkswagen brand, said in his speech at the annual Volkswagen Media Conference, that the Passat is almost ready to arrive in dealerships across the Old Continent. But he stops there and does not give any other details. However, he did mention that the Passat will be available as Variant and hybrid models.

Unlike the US spec Passat, the European variant of the model sits on an MQB platform. The eighth generation of the D segment vehicle was launched way back in 2014, as a premium car that is still affordable to most. This model will be available as a traditional sedan, a practical wagon, and a rugged Alltrack wagon.

In today’s world, there are a lot of pros and cons that this highly digital world has brought to us. We’ve become so used to instant gratification that having to wait for something we really want can be excruciating. When most things can arrive in what seems to be a blink of an eye, a wait of nearly two years to get your hands on the Ford GT must feel terrible. That is indeed a serious type of punishment.

This is the experience of about 6,500 car enthusiasts from all over the world who applied to purchase one of the first 500 Ford GT supercars. Yes, this model has been available in the United States for quite some time now. That’s why it’s a big deal when you’re one of the first persons in Europe to get the keys to the GT.

The lucky customer who is the first to receive this GT in Scandinavia is Jason Watt. He used to be a racing driver in Denmark. Back in 1999, he got into a major motorcycle accident, which resulted to his body being paralyzed from the chest down.

As of today, Jeep’s smallest SUV would be the Renegade, measuring just over 13 feet (396 centimeters) long, and 5 feet (152 cm) tall. To compare that with its largest range topping model, the Grand Cherokee has impressive dimensions of 16 feet (487 cm) long and almost 6 feet (182 cm) tall - that depends on the trim level still. Now, the American automaker believes that they could go another size down from the Renegade, as they plan to introduce a new SUV to be built in Europe.

In an interview between Automotive News and Mike Manley, the automaker’s CEO, he mentioned that the company is looking into an SUV that will be sized smaller than the Renegade, which he refers to as the “baby” Jeep. If this model pushes through as planned, it will be built in Europe, and will be sold in markets outside of the United States. Too bad, the Americans won’t get a mini Jeep.

If everything goes as planned, the baby Jeep will be built where the Fiat Panda minicar is being built, at FCA’s factory in Pomigliano, near Naples in Italy. According to some sources, the American automaker has been tossing around the idea of a baby SUV at FCA’s Pomigliano plant since early last year, telling them that this model could be built on the same platform as the Panda, 500 minicars, and the Lancia Ypsilon. However, this project has suffered many stops and starts.

Jeep is obviously busy and has been seen all over the globe, from revealing the Grand Commander in China, preparing the Renegade for a facelift, and launching the refreshed Cherokee. But even with all these projects lined up, the automaker has not stopped from adding a new special edition version for its European market. We’re referring of course to the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee S that customers from several countries in Europe can already order.

What makes the range-topping edition of the Grand Cherokee stand out from the rest of its variants would be the fact that it sits on 20-inch wheels and it features blackened lower and upper grilles in the front bumper, tinted windows with black chrome surround, and dual exhausts with black chrome finish. When you enter its cabin, it seems to match the exterior with its blacked out details including the wood finishes and black instrument panel accent stitching. It also gets Anodized Gun Metal accents.

Customers have a wide array of choices when it comes to choosing an exterior colour for the Grand Cherokee S, with 10 different hues. There are also three engines including the entry-level version that is a 3.0 liter diesel that carries out 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts), a 3.6 liter V6 with naturally aspirated gasoline engine, with as much as 286 horsepower (213 kilowatts), and a 5.7 liter HEMI V8 with as much as 352 horsepower (262 kilowatts), which is considered to be the range topping model.

Two months ago, there were reports about Tesla Semi sales as it skyrocketed just a few weeks after being launched in the United States. Huge companies like J.B. Hunt, Walmart, Loblaws and Meijer had placed their reservations on the all-electric truck, as well as some other international companies. Also, the largest reservation that has been made was for 125 units (by none other than UPS).

Furthermore, Tesla received a total of around 140 pre-orders from the companies that ordered from them. And now, that number has probably doubled or tripled. The electric car maker promises to begin deliveries for the first batch of orders starting in late 2019.

Other companies that made reservations late last year include Sysco, DHL Supply Chain, Mecca & Son Trucking, Fercam, European based Girteka Logistics, Ryder and some others.

General Motors has long faced issues in the European market. After years of experiencing losses, as well as weakening sales, the brand earlier this year sold off not only its Vauxhall brand but even the Opel brand. Opel is the main brand name that GM uses in Europe with the exception of the U.K. In the United Kingdom, Vauxhall, a British subsidiary of Opel, uses its very own brand name.

GM had disclosed that its European operations experienced a $257 million loss, the 16th year it had done so. GM would then sell the Opel and Vauxhall brands to the PSA Group in a deal valued at $2.3 billion.

For those familiar with the matter, the European operations of Chevrolet, known way back as Daewoo, was also halted in 2013. This was after the Chevrolet brand experienced losses amounting to $18 billion over several years. The phaseout was completed by the later part of 2015. Saab, which is another GM brand, was initially sold in 2010 before succumbing to bankruptcy by 2012.

After a somewhat successful fray into the automotive market in China, the resurrected German automobile brand Borgward is finally heading to Europe, bringing along with it the Borgward BX7 sports utility vehicle.

Borgward’s first stop is Germany, where it plans to start sales of its BX7 SUV in the first quarter of 2018. Commencing sales in Germany would signal its homecoming in Europe. The company was founded in 1929 by Carl Borgward. However, Borgward ceased to exist in 1961 when it was forced into liquidation by its creditors. In 2008, the company was revived by the founder’s grandson, Christian Borgward, with some investment from China. The carmaker unveiled its first car since 1961 – the BX7 and its sporty TS version – at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Since then, Borgward has concentrated its sales efforts in China. Now, the carmaker is fully intent into re-launching the brand in Europe, starting with Germany. As disclosed to Auto Express by Tom Anliker, Borgward’s Vice President for marketing, the Borgward BX7 is just the first step of the European re-launch, and it will be followed by its smaller sibling –a right-hand drive version of the BX-5 compact SUV. The company also plans to offer the Borgward BX5 in the United Kingdom.

For those who are into pickup trucks, there’s good news as the new Renault Alaskan can now be yours as they expand to more countries in Europe. It had entered the South American market last year followed by its Colombian debut. The French automaker developed this model as an alternative to the Nissan Navara and the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, and it will be offering the one-ton pickup in Europe.

Under the hood of the Alaskan pickup is a 2.3-liter dCi diesel engine. Customers could either go for the base model with 160 horsepower (119 kilowatts) or the 190 horsepower (141 kilowatts) option. Both engines can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic. It has a towing capacity of 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms) and can haul up to 1,630 pounds (739 kilograms). The pickup is available in three driving modes including a two-wheel drive, a 4LO, or a 4H full AWD.

The functionality and performance of the Renault Alaskan are at par with competitors like the Ford Ranges and the Toyota Hilux, which are both currently out in the European market. Believe it or not, this truck can hit the 0 to 60 mile-per-hour (96 kilometers per hour) speed in only 12 seconds, before it reaches its top speed of 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour).

Japanese carmaker Nissan is now selling across Europe a new special version of its Nissan Pulsar compact family hatchback. More stylish, more elegant and more comfortable than the standard Pulsar, the new 2018 Nissan Pulsar Black Edition intends to remind everyone that the compact hatchback hasn’t given up in its goal to be recognized in its segment.

When Nissan introduced the Pulsar family hatchback three years ago in 2014, the Japanese carmaker had hoped this new challenger would take a good chunk of the compact hatch market. Although the Pulsar was an exciting proposition and did manage to capture some sales in Europe, it really never managed to present a good challenge against more established hatches in the C-segment like the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon or the Ford Focus.

But still, Nissan is not giving up on its ambitions in the continent, and the evidence of this is the introduction of the new Nissan Pulsar Black Edition. As its moniker indicates, the new 2018 Nissan Pulsar Black Edition contains a number of black design accents, allowing it to become more stylish inside and out. The design of the new Nissan Pulsar Black Edition greatly reinforces its known attributes such as spaciousness and high level of safety. Nissan is hoping that the new Pulsar Black Edition would convince potential customers that the Pulsar is still a good proposition and there is a great reason to purchase it.

Volkswagen recently revealed their first ever compact crossover, namely the T-Roc. This model goes right below the Tiguan in the company’s lineup, as its smallest subcompact ever. This model is like a hybrid of an SUV and a compact hatchback, and what we know is that it will be sold in Europe before the year ends. The CUV will make its first public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

When the T-Roc becomes available in Germany and the rest of Europe, customers will be able to choose from a number of engine options - for both gasoline and diesel. This includes a 1.0 liter, a 1.5 liter, and 2.0 liter TSI units, with 114 horsepower (85 kilowatts), 148 horsepower (110 kW), and 188 horsepower (140 kW), respectively. The first two can be had with six speed manual giving power to the front wheels, while a seven-speed dual clutch can be an option for the 1.5 liter unit. The 2.0, on the other hand can be paired with the dual-clutch box. For those who prefer driving a diesel, the T-Roc will be available in a 1.6 liter or a 2.0 liter TDI motor with the same output as the gasoline engines. For the T-Roc, entry-level models will be available in front-wheel drive, while larger engines can get an all-wheel drive option.

Initially, the company considered a plan to bring the model to the United States after the European release, but it seems like the company has changed their mind. Because now, reports say that the model will only be limited to Europe and China, and that piece of tidbit apparently came from VW insiders. This means that the United States will only be limited to the Tiguan if they want a compact model. But even with this statement, US fans should not lose hope at all, as there is still chance for a US-spec T-Roc, said Automobile Magazine. It is just a matter of when we will see one. Who knows, maybe the T-Roc’s future successor will head to North America.

The Blue Oval has been gearing its European light commercial vehicle lineup for an apparent upgrade in the previous months. Finally, the first to be released from the American automaker is the newly facelifted Tourneo Custom van. Having an interior that can accommodate up to nine passengers, the enhanced van has been given a new face, a completely improved interior and a bit of tech enhancements. The new van focuses more on the cabin features with the American automaker targeting the executive shuffle business.

With the van's exterior, the front part will now showcase a more prominent high-mounted radiator grille with a bigger company logo, sweptback headlights with fresh graphics and integrated LED daytime running lights, and a modified bumper with fresh fog lamps. The standard versions will be further fitted with base halogen lights, and the pricier models will be given Xenon illumination.

For the Tourneo Custom's interior, there are familiar features but nevertheless, it will also offer a new vibe. The swanky dashboard will now have a tablet-like screen for the infotainment system with SYNC3 connectivity and soft-touch surfaces and eye-catching detailing paired with chrome and gloss black finishes, wholly inspired by the new Ford Fiesta.

The 2017 Ford Mustang only received a two-star rating (out of five) last January when it went through the European New Car Assessment Program. But now that there is a 2018 model year, the European NCAP had to re-evaluate the new and updated model. Thanks to the additional safety technology, the score had been raised to three stars. Not a huge difference, but it’s definitely better than a two.

Unlike the US based 2018 Mustang, the Euro-spec one now comes standard with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assistance. The ‘Safety Assist Pillar’ increased from 16 percent to 61 percent - that is equivalent to a five-star rating in this category. These features are optional for the US market. The refreshed Mustang is now equipped with front airbags that meet Euro NCAP’s requirements, helping to avoid the worst case scenario during a serious collision.

For the adult occupant testing, the rating remains at 72 percent, while the pedestrian protection increased to 78 percent. In contrast, the child occupant rating goes down to 32 percent.

Earlier this year, German automaker Opel revealed their largest SUV to date, the Grandland X as it made its debut online. The SUV, a European exclusive, comes in a sophisticated new look and shares some of its genes with the Peugeot 3008.

Having said that, the Opel has pretty impressive measurements of 14.7 feet (4.48 meters) with a cargo space of 18 cubic-feet (514 liters) to fit all your extra large luggage. That’s very close to the Peugeot’s 18.3 cubic-feet (520 liter) cargo capacity and its length of 14.5 feet (4.42 metres). With these specs, you're probably expecting a hefty price tag that comes with it. The good news is that the Opel Grandland X actually costs less than its Peugeot counterpart, with a starting price of €23,700 (£20,890) including VAT versus the €25,995 (£22,910) Peugeot.

That price comes with a 1.2 liter turbocharged gas engine that can carry out 130 horsepower (96 kilowatts) and 169 pound-feet (230 Newton-metres) of torque. If you are not keen on getting a gasoline engine, you can opt for the 1.6 liter diesel option producing 120 horsepower (88 kW), and 221 pound-feet (300 Nm) of torque for a starting price of €26,500 (£23,335). But if neither of those options are up to your liking, then that is not a problem as Opel is developing a variant that has "more power" that should be out in the market soon.

After a prototype version of the BMW 1 Series 120i sedan – sans any disguise – was spotted in Munich, Germany early this year, many interested and potential customers had their hopes up that the German premium carmaker would offer the front-wheel-drive 1 Series Sedan in Europe. But to their dismay, BMW doesn’t plan to immediately bring the 1 Series Sedan from China to Europe, according to Autocar, citing a source from the German luxury carmaker.

While the new 1 Series Sedan is part of the BMW’s offering, it is not being offered in Europe since this so-called baby Bimmer is an exclusive product targeting affluent customers in China. BMW officially introduced the 1 Series Sedan at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China, hoping to take advantage of a new generation of car buyers that might shy away from larger premium vehicles that are currently the trend in the country.

BMW has already made it clear that the BMW 1 Series Sedan will only be offered in China. Autocar’s BMW source said the carmaker won’t be rushing the introduction of the 1 Series sedan outside of China, even though rival saloon model from Audi (Audi A3 saloon) managed to achieve much success in the global stage. Likewise, BMW’s reluctance to launch the 1 Series Sedan in Europe bears quite a contrast to a recent confirmation from rival Mercedes-Benz that its A-Class line-up will feature a saloon model in 2018.

It is common knowledge by now that after American actor Chuck Norris was born, he drove his mom home from the hospital. Sounds impossible, right? Got you. Back in 2008, the internet was blowing up with various Chuck Norris memes that referenced his super human strength and immortality. Due to this unexpected fame that made him an Internet cult hero and a genuine web phenomenon, Fiat Professional decided to hire the martial arts expert as their new brand ambassador for a range of advertisements that will air in June, hoping to bank on his "perpetual toughness.”

The notable martial artist will now lend his macho image to Fiat Professional as the commercial vehicle brand's official spokesperson in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Norris will also star in the Italian automaker's ads, and we are excited to see how the producers will give life to his famously powerful character. However, the ads will not be viewed in the United States due to the fact that the American martial arts star will advertise for foreign pickup and vans including the Fullback, Doblo and Ducato. But thank God for YouTube as we can see any hilarious moments make the must-see list.

Nonetheless, Norris is also the perfect person to advertise for Ram's truck, if the company so decides. Moreover, Chuck Norris is a respectable and well-liked actor by the public worldwide. Fiat Professional commented that a research test was conducted across Europe and it yielded results that named him up as the best brand ambassador when it comes to relevance, affinity and appeal for professional consumers. Officials within the Italian automotive company even confessed that Norris' amazing, ironically surreal actions, which have reached an impressive large audience, played a huge part in helping them choose the martial arts actor.

Amongst all sports cars on the planet, which one is the world’s best-selling model? Would you have guessed that it is the Ford Mustang? According to IHS Markit’s global automotive registration data, it is. Just last year, 150,000 units of the Ford Mustang were sent out globally from its factory, making it the world’s most popular sports car.

The Mustang was first released in the 1960s for the US market, and it had always been at the top in terms of sales in North America. But the company thought that the model would not sell well in European and Asian countries because it’s a left-hand drive vehicle. Therefore, it took them sometime before deciding to push through with releasing an international edition of the Mustang.

But when the company finally decided to produce a European-focused Mustang, it instantly seemed like the world can’t get enough of it. In the first year of its release, the company already got 15,000 orders of the sports car from Europe. Four thousand five hundred of those units were sent to the United Kingdom alone. The Mustang is also the most popular model in France, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Greece, and Finland.

Lancia recently took out its European websites except for one, that of course is the Italy-based website, which is where they originate. According to recent reports, the company is not selling any more of their vehicles outside Italy - that gives you another reason to visit the country if you are a fan of the brand. Though there has not been an official statement from the company, the rumours seem pretty much accurate.

We have to admit that we saw this coming. The fact that its parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hasn’t really been taking care of the brand, and has not really marketed the brand globally. Let us be honest, how often do you hear about Lancia developing new models?

Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands and other EU countries currently display this on their websites “Thank you for your interest in Lancia. Already own a Lancia? Click here for after-sales service”. Smaller countries such as Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, on the other hand, do not have an official site for Lancia.
