2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV delivers more torque from bigger Atkinson-cycle 2.4-liter engine

A couple of years ago, Mitsubishi introduced the Outlander PHEV. And by now, they are giving the plug-in hybrid SUV a significant update for the 2019 model year, a few months after launching the model in the United States. The most important change though is found under the hood. This is because the former Otto-cycle 2.0 liter gasoline engine has been replaced by a larger Atkinson cycle 2.4 liter unit.

Mitsubishi decided not to share output number, but instead, they said that the torque has gone beyond 186 Newton metres (137 pound feet), which is attainable at 4,500 rpm in the previous Outlander PHEV. Meanwhile, efficiency has improved and a smoother operation is expected from it. The vehicle’s output remains a mystery to us at this point, but for what it is worth, the 2.0 liter engine had an output of 118 horsepower (87 kilowatts) at 4,500 rpm.

Furthermore, the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV benefits from a 10 percent generator output hike and a 10% boost of the rear motor’s output. They also decided to tweak its lithium ion battery pack that has a capacity of 13.8 kilowatts per hours, which has increased from the previous 12 kWh. Furthermore, the battery’s output has improved by 10 percent. These revisions also affected the electric range compared to the outgoing model with 22 miles too.

Ukraine Police Force receives fleet of 635 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs

The National Police of Ukraine has a whole array of vehicles under their belt, including the Toyota Prius, Hyundai Sonata, Renault Dokker, and even a few Lada Niva 4x4s. And now, the list is now longer as the East European country received an overwhelming 635 plug-in hybrid SUVs from Mitsubishi, probably the biggest ever fleet of plug in hybrid vehicles delivered by the Japanese automaker.

This is not a first for the Japanese automaker as a few years ago, the company shipped a total of 507 full electric i-MiEVs in Estonia. Now Mitsubishi has delivered an army of 635 Outlander PHEVS that is based on the facelifted variant. Both of these contracts were approved as part of the Green Investment Scheme, an international emissions trading plan that aims to reduce C02 emissions and greenhouse warming gases.

The overwhelming fleet of environment-friendly SUVs was transferred to Kiev, with a delivery ceremony held in the country's capital where the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the MMC's president and chief graced the affair and even took part in the festivities. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was considered as the best-selling plug in hybrid in Europe for no less than 4 successive years and had impressive registered sales of about 80,768 units at the latter part of last year. The SUV has been rolled out since 2013.

Mitsubishi Motors has completed another stage of testing during the development of Outlander PHEV, this time letting the vehicle experience cold weather in Russia for two months. The testing was part of the goal to make the Outlander PHEV a truly global vehicle that could thrive in all possible driving conditions in all regions in the world.

Prior to the Russia testing, the Outlander PHEV already went hot weather testing in the United States and cold weather assessment in Canada. Three test cars accumulated over 30,000 km during over eight weeks of testing in Russian cities of Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Tolyatti, where they were subjected to a very low temperature of below -30° C and snow-covered road surfaces.

Despite the harsh weather, the Outlander still managed to eke out a good performance, with no issues for the charging system. Mitsubishi’s engineering team has already subjected the Outlander PHEV to places where conventional EVs thrive, testing the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle on various road surfaces.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will launch the Outlander plug-in hybrid in the United States in 2015, two years following its global debut. The delay is due to bottlenecks in the manufacture of batteries. The Japanese carmaker is ramping up battery supply, but this will not be enough to commence delivering the Outlander plug-in hybrid in the US in 2014 as initially planned.

Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko attributed the delay to tight capacity at its main battery supplier Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors, GS Yuasa Corp. and Mitsubishi Corp. Until this fall, Mitsubishi was receiving only 2,000 battery packs a month from LEJ since production is split between batteries for the Outlander plug-in and batteries for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

In September, however, LEJ shifted output of EV batteries to a separate site, thus freeing capacity at the first plant to build more batteries for the Outlander plug-in hybrid. As a result, Mitsubishi now can receive 4,000 plug-in battery packs a month, with an expectation to get 5,000 a month in April when LEJ further expands capacity.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is recalling its i-MiEV units in Japan due to a production glitch that caused one lithium ion battery pack to melt and another to catch fire in March 2013. The carmaker will recall over 4,000 vehicles with the potentially faulty batteries in Japan starting mid-July. Mitsubishi has sold a small number of affected i-MiEVs in Europe and the United States.

Also affected is Mitsubishi’s Outlander plug-in hybrid crossover sold only in Japan. The carmaker has stopped production and sales of the affected vehicles. According to Mitsubishi spokeswoman Namie Koketsu, they are preparing appropriate measures for markets outside Japan, which may mean a similar recall in the US.

The carmaker said in April it had contacted drivers in the US about the glitch. The carmaker has come up with a solution to the problem in May that could prevent the defects.Koketsu said the new process will produce replacement batteries for the cars being recalled.

With the discontinuation of Suzuki’s operations in the U.S., Mitsubishi isn’t daunted and has pledged to remain in the U.S. market in spite of its widening inventory, plunging sales, and dearth of new products. However, Mitsubishi has announced that it seeks to launch two new vehicles -- the 2014 Outlander SUV and a new Limited Edition trim level for its 2013 Outlander Sport CUV -- at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

The 2014 Outlander made its debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It was actually available for sale at the Japanese domestic market for a short period in conventional gas-burning form. A plug-in hybrid is in development.

Mitsubishi has set some grand goals by indicating that the Outlander will have the fuel economy of a compact CUV while also being a seven-seater as standard. It appears that Mitsubishi is hoping to achieve a 30-mpg highway rating but it hasn’t been figured out just what features the Outlander will have to attain this.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is aiming to make its redesigned Outlander mid-sized crossover as the brand's top-selling vehicle. Mitsubishi is expecting to sell around 33,000 units annually of the next-generation Outlander when it rolls out the vehicle next year in North America. So far, the Japanese carmaker only managed to sell 5,909 Outlanders in the first nine months of 2012.

Mitsubishi’s expectations for the Outlander are considered ambitious, as the numbers do not include a plug-in hybrid version that will also be marketed in the United States. Mitsubishi sold 99,531 vehicles in Canada and the US in 2011.

That year, leading the sales charge for the carmaker was the Mitsubishi Lancer, which accounted for 19,874 units out of total Mitsubishi sales in the US of 79,020 units.

Mitsubishi announced that at this year’s Paris Motor Show it will bring the all-new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV. According to the Japanese manufacturer, the new car is not a mere adaptation of an existing or a dedicated Plug-in Hybrid technology showcase. The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV (or “PHEV”) promises to share its architecture with the soon-to-be-introduced New Outlander’s ICE versions.

So, what to expect? Well, Mitsubishi says that its first Plug-in Hybrid car will be an EV-based vehicle relying on its extensive EV and electronic know-how and supplemented by a petrol engine. Mitsubishi says that this solution is more suited to global markets than diesel.

Moreover, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV will be the first permanent 4WD electric car in series production. Just like the other plug-in hybrids on the market, the new crossover will offer unique drive train combination of front electric motor + rear electric motor + front traction/generator petrol engine, which translates into a choice of three driving modes: Pure (Twin Motor 4WD EV), Series (Twin Motor 4WD - EV supported by generator) and Parallel (ICE engine supported by Twin Motor 4WD).

Mitsubishi is intent on lowering emissions for the third-generation Outlander medium SUV, the production version of which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The new model features a new design style for the company after it dismissed the aggressive "jet-fighter" grille, which was first viewed on the Evo sports sedan and utilized on the current Outlander.

The new appearance was seen by the PX-MiEV II last year at the Tokyo auto show. It signifies an aspiration to reduce emissions, the company said. General Design Manager Hiroaki Ohtsuka commented at the Tokyo show that up until now, Mitsubishi has focused on the drivability and SUV development. He disclosed that their new initiative switches the focus to the more environmental factors.

In Europe, the new Outlander will be launched for sale in late summer with a selection of a 2-liter petrol or a 2.2-liter diesel. The emissions decreased to as low as 130g/km with the selection of a two-wheel-drive variant and the utilization of stop-start technology.
