The C450 AMG Sport wasn’t the only model unveiled by Mercedes-Benz at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) as the German brand also brought the 2016 C350 Plug-In Hybrid. This new model uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that generates 211 hp (155 kW) and 350 Nm of torque. In addition, there is an electric motor with an output of 60 kW and 340 Nm of torque.
The total output delivered by the hybrid system is 279 hp (205 kW) and 600 Nm of torque. Bolted to a 7-speed automatic transmission (7G Tronic Plus), the hybrid module pushes the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds (estate model in 6.2 seconds), while top speed is limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph (246 km/h or 152 mph for the estate model).

The 2015 Detroit Auto Show was the place chosen by Hyundai to launch its first plug-in hybrid model, the 2016 Sonata Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). This new model uses a 2.0-liter Nu four-cylinder GDI engine producing 154 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque, coupled with a 50kW electric motor. The total output delivered by the system is 202 hp at 6,000 rpm.
Moreover, the Sonata Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) uses a six-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai’s Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED) as well as a 9.8 kWh lithium polymer battery pack. According to Hyundai, the battery can store enough energy to offer an all-electric range of up to 22 miles.
Sonata PHEV is expected to deliver 93 MPGe combined in EV mode, 38 mpg in the city, 43 mpg on the highway and 40 mpg combined. Ever since the Jeep Renegade compact sports utility vehicle arrived in 2014, it has been powered by diesel, gasoline or flex (gasoline plus ethanol) engines. But by the start of the decade (2020), the Renegade will also feature a new electrified version, and Fiat Chrysler is already preparing for its production.
In an announcement, FCA basically confirmed the arrival of the all-new Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) in 2020. It will be produced at the FCA Melfi Plant in Italy, where the carmaker is also building the conventionally powered Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X models. The Renegade has been built at its vehicle assembly plant in Melfi, Italy as well as in production locations in Brazil and China. It is the first Jeep product to be built exclusively outside of North America.

When BMW finally commences sales of the heavily anticipated 8-Series Coupe, it will offer the all-new flagship in two powerful engine variants – a petrol-powered biturbo 4.4 liter V8 unit and a diesel-fueled 3.0 liter biturbo inline six mill. Nonetheless, there are customers hoping that new BMW 8 Series would be offered with a V12 engine or a plug-in hybrid drive, but the German premium has no plans for those.
Carsten Groeber, vice-president of product management at BMW Group, was quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show as saying that a V12-powered 8 Series won't happen. The BMW 7 Series -- the M760Li xDrive in particular – is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 petrol engine that can provide 601 hp (448 kW) of output and 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque. This allows the M760Li xDrive to dash from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
Groeber noted that the V8 engine and the in-line six unit already allows for a perfect weight distribution with the new 8 Series. Since the V12 engine is a very heavy mill, it would destroy this weight distribution, particularly making the front too heavy. There had been speculations that the Bentley Bentayga will soon have a hybrid powertrain that will be added to its engine lineup. And recently, the automaker confirmed this matter. So expect to see the SUV with a PHEV variant at the upcoming 2018 Geneva Motor Show in early March this year.
Under the Bentley Bentayga’s hood will be an engine that is similar to that of the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. It will be equipped with a 2.9 liter V6 that will be paired to an electric motor so it can produce a total output of about 462 horsepower (345 kilowatts). Expect the Bentayga to have a similar range as the Panamera, capable of reaching 30 miles (48 kilometers) on purely electric energy.
Currently, the Bentley Bentayga offers a 6.0 liter W12 biturbo and a 4.0 liter V8 biturbo diesel, which the new PHEV version will join. This version will go on sale in the second quarter of 2018. There’s no stopping the increasing popularity of electric vehicles across the globe. Nevertheless, a lot of people are still into internal combustion and do not want that to become extinct. However, if Porsche is right, the future of performance could possibly be more silent. Klaus Zellner, Porsche’s President and CEO of North America spoke to Green Car Reports in Los Angeles and he said that hybrid technologies have brought more new buyers to Porsche showrooms more than any other models they have sold.
In the same interview, he said that the automaker expects half of its global sales volume to come from plug-in hybrids by 2025. In fact, this figure seems a lot more than what people might expect. But for this to actually happen, Porsche will have to develop and offer more plug-in hybrid models. As of today, it is just the Panamera and the Cayenne that have such technology. In the near future, the Mission E will be part of the lineup, but this will instead rely solely on the electric power to provide its punch. Kia first unveiled the Niro PHEV at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, where it said it would go on sale in sale in the third quarter of 2017. Now, the US version of the Niro PHEV has made its debut in LA, sales in the country expected to commence in 2018. Once sales go online, the new 2018 Kia Niro PHEV will be available in three trim levels: LX, EX and EX Premium.
The new Niro PHEV has all the same packaging and driving enjoyment offered by the Niro hybrid. However, it has a number of elements that identify it as a PHEV. These include “ECO/Plug-In” badges, hybrid blue exterior accents, a charge port door (on left front fender) as well as tweaked front grille insert and surround. It has taken many months of rumours and speculations before we actually get a confirmation from Jeep regarding the next generation Wrangler. And finally, the actual product is now exhibited at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. Mike Manley also took this opportunity to make an interesting announcement. During the event, he said that the car manufacturer does have plans to roll out a plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler for the 2020 model year.
Though the boss did not share a lot of details about the new and improved Wrangler, we know that it will be partially electrified. And having said that, we could expect it to have a plug-in hybrid powertrain like that of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, which comes with a 3.6 liter V6 gasoline engine. This would likely be paired with two electric motors and a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Here is the thing, there might be something about the packaging that might turn out to be problematic. And because of that, the Wrangler PHEV might actually feature its own setup. Ford has just stepped up its game by electrifying its models for the police, fire and government market. This special edition model of the Fusion Energi, which is officially known as the Special Service Plug-In Hybrid Sedan. Though this model was not made for pursuits, the four-door vehicle can cover as far as 500 miles (805 kilometers), including 21 miles (34 kilometers) that’s propelled by electric power alone.
According to Ford, they believe that this sort of setup is perfect for officials like detectives, police and fire chiefs. This model will be up for grabs starting December this year, but deliveries will not begin until summer 2018.

Honda this week announced that its all-new 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will arrive at US dealerships with a starting price of $33,400 beginning on the first of December. Because the Clarity PHEV is qualified for the full federal tax credit deduction program, the all-new Clarity sedans can be had for as low as $26,790 and $29,990 including destination charges, minus the supposed $7,500 federal taxes.
The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid Touring, which will be offered with a suggested retail price of $35,600 will have a more upscale feel to it over the standard variant. Exclusive to this level are the Ultrasuede interior, perforated leather-trimmed seats, a four-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat and a driver seat with eight-way power adjustment with two-position memory.
While a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a navigation system with charging infrastructure information are part of the Touring package, both sedans will be featuring the same 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and heated side mirrors. All is set for Volkswagen’s plans to enter the electric vehicle game, as prompted by the so-called Dieselgate scandal. In fact, the German carmaker has already made a commitment to offer at least five battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the next five years. However, Volkswagen is not intending to offer plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEV) in North America, and possibly also in Europe.
This was divulged by Volkswagen brand chief Herbert Diess in an interview with Car and Driver. The new plans were a contrast to the ones formulated under the former boss of Volkswagen Group of America Michael Horn. The initial plans entailed replacing the group’s diesel vehicles with clean PHEVs. But those plans have been scrapped. As per the interview, Diess remarked that the German carmaker could still make the VW Tiguan as the best-selling SUV even without offering it as a plug-in hybrid in North America and Europe. He noted that the EV incentive scheme in North America doesn’t include PHEVs, which means offering these clean vehicles won't make sense for the carmaker.
For now, Diess’ efforts focus on offering BEVs, 15 of which have already been decided for the group. Five of these 15 pure EVs are earmarked for the VW brand. All of these future BEVs will be underpinned by the new Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) platform, a battery electric architecture. According to Diess, the new MEB platform would result to economies of scale, allowing VW to unleash the potential of its electric vehicles. He believes that by switching into BEVs, VW would be able to save costs, including those related to development.
