Nissan design chief confirms 370Z successor is on the works

October 2019 is an important month for Nissan. It marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary 240Z, which is the original Z model from the Japanese carmaker. As part of the celebrations, Nissan is planning to unveil a new Z car – in prototype form -- at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, which coincides with the 50th year of the very first Z model.

This was basically confirmed by Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Design, during an interview with Whichcar.com.au. Before this confirmation, there had been rumors that Nissan is planning a replacement for the 370Z, which has been in production since nearly 10 years ago. This decade-old two-seater rear-wheel-drive coupe is considered as one of the oldest sports car available in the market. A replacement would hardly surprise anyone, but back then, Nissan had yet to confirm anything.

During an interview with Whichcar.com.au, Albaisa remarked that is a huge pressure in creating a new Z car, adding that he is completely excited that he is in the position to work on the newest Z model. His statement essentially confirmed the rumors and the possibility of a new Z car. This also confirmed that no less than Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Design is involved in the project. Nonetheless, many are thrilled that the 370Z won't be continued as another version – instead a new Z car is really on the way. Expect a new Z prototype at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

This insane Nissan 370Zki snowmobile will be presented at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show

The latest teaser Nissan showed us had an image of the snowy mountains with an audio of what we thought was the 370Z’s engine sound. To cap off the teaser, it was introduced as the 370Zki. Well, if you want to see this Nissan snowmobile for yourself, check out this two-door snowmobile at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show. And before you get too excited, we will already tell you that this is not for sale.

Having said that, it does not mean that it is impossible for you to customize one, it’s just that it may be quite difficult and impractical. To do this, you will have to order tracks and skis from American Track Truck. And then a highly capable person should be able to attach it to a tiny sports car. That’s where it becomes tricky. For this unit, the entire driveline had to be scrapped.

This process involves lifting the car by three inches all around, which needed a custom lift kit. But even that was not enough space for the tracks that measure four feet on the ground. Of course, other necessary things like custom mounts for the rear springs, and three-inch wheel spacers were added to get the tracks away from the car. Both the exhaust and the brake lines were rerouted, while the rear wheel wells were modified so the tracks won’t chew up the body. All that change was just for the back.

Updated 2018 Nissan 370Z now available with new infotainment unit, red metallic paint

The 370Z is one of Nissan’s oldest two-door models. It was first introduced to us back in 2009 and this year, the Japanese automaker finally gave it an upgrade for the 2018 model year to give it a much-needed contemporary finish.

Naturally, it will get exterior and interior changes, as well as some technological upgrades. For instance, the door handles and the rear bumper fascia will now be finished in black. Furthermore, the headlights will be getting a darker tint treatment similar to the rear combination lights on the outgoing model, which used to only be available on the Nismo model.

2018 Nissan 370Z will now be riding on a set of 19-inch alloy wheels instead of the 18-inch set found in its predecessor. As you can see in the photo, the Nissan model is finished in a Red Metallic exterior paint that is now an option that customers can select.

2015 Nissan 370Z Nismo Test Drive: The Four Wheels Japanese Warrior

How the new 2015 Nissan 370Z NISMO made its global debut is quite unusual as its arrival at ZDAYZ came as a surprise. Everyone was astonished as it was unveiled at this yearly event attended by those who either own or are fans of Nissan, Datsun and NISMO vehicles.

The mood at the gathering turned into a frenzy when the new 370Z NISMO model was shown and especially when its specs were announced. Aside from the improvements inside and outside, it came with a broader lineup that includes new 370Z NISMO Tech grade as well as both 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmissions.

Nissan Chief Planning Officer and Executive Vice President Andy Palmer said that the decision to have its world debut in front of this crowd composed of its “most loyal and enthusiast owners” was only fitting because the brand considers NISMO to be the “heart and soul” of its performance whether it’s driving on the track or on the road.

Black Friday is typically a special day to go shopping. For drift fans, however, it was a special day to watch some spectacular drifts done by champion drift drivers. On that day, Hoonigan and Nissan flocked to the abandoned Hawthorne Mall near Los Angeles to perform some awe-inspiring drifts that left fans mesmerized.

Through Hoonigan's "Black Friday" and Nissan's "Black Friday 360 Experience, people witnessed the drifting performances of two-time Formula Drift Champion Chris Forsberg and Ryan Tuerck in their 1000 hp Nissan 370Z's. In particular, the Black Friday 360 Experience had some scary yet amazing moments.

One of these was when Forsberg swerved the back of the Nissan 370Z on the ledge of a 30-foot drop. He remarked that while he could mentally block out the drop, he was really concerned about the surface, which was dusty and was made of polished concrete.

Nissan’s big surprise for the 2015 Chicago Auto Show was the 370 NISMO Roadster Concept, a vehicle that previews an open-top version of the 370 NISMO Coupe. Compared to the coupe, the 370 Nismo Roadster Concept shows the same design with a deep front fascia which includes Hyper LED Daytime Running Lights, Black headlight bezels, a NISMO emblem as well as the NISMO red stripe accents.

From the side, we can see the NISMO red accents, the red sideview mirror covers and the top-down profile. The fixed headrest bars are located in the middle of the vehicle and are wrapped in leather with red accents.

The rear end features a custom carbon-fiber rear spoiler, while the power-folding roof with fabric inner liner design completed the design. Moreover, the concept uses 19-inch NISMO forged aluminum-alloy wheels by RAYS, wrapped in Y-rated Bridgeston Potenza S001.

Things are getting more and more interesting when talking about the Nissan 370Z successor. According to the latest reports, the new Nissan Z will get smaller but powerful models that will carry Mercedes-Benz technology as well as an impressive design.

If the current version was developed mainly for the United States and Japan, the successor will become a global sports car. As a result, the convertible version will receive a retractable hard-top, but a new model will also arrive with a targa top or a t-bar roof.

The decision to introduce a targa version is that is that Nissan wants to reach a wider section of potential customers.

As we told you yesterday, Nissan unveiled today the 2015 370Z Nismo at ZDATZ, the annual meeting of Nissan, Datsun and Nismo owners and enthusiasts. As you can see from the photos, the 2015 Nissan Nismo 370Z is a clear departure from the 2014MY Nismo 370Z and follows the same color scheme found on the 2014 Nismo GT-R.

The front end is dominated by the new front bumper that features a big air intake and LED Hyper Daytime Running Lights. In addition, the coupe comes with black headlight bezels, Nismo emblem and signature Nismo red stripe accent on the front lip spoiler.

Nissan has just announced a new Nismo model that will make its debut tomorrow at the ZDayz 2014. For those who don’t know, this event takes place on May 15-19th, 2014 at Fontana Village Resort in NC. As expected, the new model is based on the Nissan 370Z and taking a closer look at the teaser we believe that this new vehicle is actually the 2015 370Z Nismo.

If you recall, the current Nissan 370Z by Nismo arrived back in 2013 at the Chicago Motor Show, which means that the coupe needed a refresh. The teaser shows that the new Nismo global model comes with the same colours as the Nissan GT-R by Nismo.

We also expect the new coupe from Nismo to use the same 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL) found on the current model. We also believe that the new sports car will be more powerful than the current version, but do not expect a dramatic increase.

Nissan is offering a preview of the 2014 370Z NISMO at the Chicago Auto Show at the same time as the debut in the U.S. of the new 2013 Nissan JUKE NISMO. The automaker is also in the process of expanding the NISMO brand worldwide. The 370Z NISMO is expected to start selling at Nissan dealerships throughout the country this summer.

It uses the new NISMO design theme with unique accents to its exterior and interior. The existing 370Z NISMO straight from the factory is a tuner’s dream. It delivers a 350hp output and features racing-inspired exterior and interior styling, a specially tuned suspension and unique super-lightweight forged alloy wheels.

However, the 2014 improvements are meant to raise the car’s visual impact even further. The exterior has new dark gray coloring added to the front and rear fascias, lower side sills, side mirrors and NISMO rear spoiler, with every element (except for the side sills) featuring NISMO-style red pinstripe accents.

Nissan has unveiled the 370Z Nismo, the newest Nismo-tuned vehicle. This summer, expect the Nissan 370Z coupe to go on sale with a variety of revisions that are meant to make it a more focused performance tool. The power output of the 3.7-litre V6 engine was given a boost from 324bhp to 335bhp, while torque was improved by an equivalent figure.

Furthermore, torque will be lower down the rev range compared to the standard car. Nissan hasn’t made any claims with regards to performance but it’s believed that throttle response was also improved. The model was also fitted with an aerodynamic bodykit that permits the 370Z Nismo to generate the same downforce as a Nissan GT-R.

Included in the aerodynamic styling changes are a large rear diffuser with twin integrated exhausts, fixed rear wing, wider side skirts and a new front end with a splitter. It gets new 19in alloys covered with wider 245/40 tyres at the front while 285/35s are used at the rear. Bridgestone made a bespoke tyre compound just for this model.

Nissan's design boss Shiro Nakamura said that the 2015 Nissan Z is in development and is at its early phase. He told Inside Line that the new Z would leaner, would weigh less, and is targeted at a wider audience. He also shared that a concept version of the car is also being developed.

It’s possible that the new Z concept will be introduced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show at the earliest. It’s assumed that a lighter Nissan Z would offer better gas mileage than the existing version. The EPA said that the 2013 Nissan 370Z is capable of returning 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway. The 370Z coupe has a curb weight of 3,314 pounds.

The current 370Z hasn’t been as successful as the 2002 350Z, which revitalizes the Z car’s image and had impressive sales in the U.S., Japan and Europe. Nakamura said that the next one needs to have a “stronger impact." He believes that this can’t be achieved by boosting its size since it’s already at its maximum size and instead, it has to be leaner and lighter. The new model features a down-sized engine, most likely a four-cylinder turbo instead of today's 3.7-liter V6.

Nissan is turning to social media to promote its new 370Z. Fans will get the opportunity to submit customization options for the new coupe and then vote on the entries. Jon Brancheau, vice president of Nissan North America marketing, said that car companies build project vehicles all the time but then they thought that it would be of some interest to exploit social media’s power to reach out to Z enthusiasts. Nissan will build Project 370Z in stages: power, handling/brakes, interior and exterior.

If you would want to make any type of comment or post about what you hope to see on a custom Z, just go to facebook.com/nissanperformance. Nissan is urging fans to participate in each phase of the job.

This will culminate at the ZDayZ event this May. Several Z events have been scheduled throughout the country aside from ZDayZ. It is set to take place from May 17 to 20 in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, including the Tail of the Dragon, a famous storied stretch of road. The Project 370Z car will be displayed at many events this year, such as the ZCon 2012 and the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

The All-Gamer Nissan 370Z marked the end of the "Road to Dubai" with a podium finish at the Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai for the 2011 winners Bryan Heitkotter and Jann Mardenborough. They were joined by 2008 and 2010 GT Academy winners Lucas Ordonez and Jordan Tresson.

Mardenborough took the checkered flag in the 24-hour competitive racing where all four players showcased their skills behind the wheel. He also brought home a race vehicle without any damage, which is a remarkable achievement after an endurance race.

Mardenborough said that the event was "without doubt the weekend of my life," comparing it to winning the GT Academy in June. He added that it is "just the first step" for him and hopes that his performance in Dubai can take him further.

Andy Palmer, Nissan's product planning chief, said that the two models expected to receive a Nismo makeover are the Nissan 370Z and Nissan Leaf. At the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan announced that Nismo will have an active participation in the production of Nissan road cars that are more focused. As a preview, Nissan displayed concept versions of the Juke and Leaf. Palmer said that he has a long list of cars that he wants Nismo to do.

He cited the 370Z and the Leaf as among those on the top of the list but for various reasons. He believes that with Nismo’s efforts, the Leaf will weigh less and will be more powerful.

He said that it won’t be about a “horsepower race” and that instead, the focus would be on improving the vehicle’s ride and handling as well as making it look “drop dead gorgeous.”
