Next generation Nissan Frontier will hit the production line in Mississippi

The Nissan Frontier will officially hit the production line, according to the Japanese automaker. They also confirmed that the mid-size pickup truck will be assembled at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Mississippi. Despite this confirmation, the automaker did not say when the production will begin, but this is a sign that change is on its way.

Vice President of Manufacturing at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant, Steve Marsh, said that their employees in Canton are excited to build the next generation Frontier, considering it to be one of the best pickup trucks in America.

We have not received many details from Nissan with regards to the pickup’s new design. But if we remember correctly, back in 2014, the Frontier Diesel Runner Concept was introduced and it indicates the possibility of a diesel engine in the lineup. If that pushes through, the Frontier will probably be equipped with a Cummins-sourced 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel that can give out as much as 200 horsepower (149 kilowatts) and more than 350 pound-feet (474 Newton-metres) of torque.

Nissan introduces Frontier and Titan Midnight Edition models just in time for solar eclipse

Amid the excitement related to the solar eclipse, Nissan revealed two of its pickups, both in a special edition livery. Instead of waiting for auto shows, Nissan chose to debut its new models in the United States on this auspicious day. The Japanese manufacturer has not introduced new models. Instead, it unveiled a Midnight Edition for the following models: Titan, Titan XD, and the Frontier.

For the Midnight Edition, expect to see a blacked out version of the cars. To be more specific, the Titan model will now get a black front grille, headlight surrounds, foglight trim. And for the Titan XD, it gets additional blacked out fender louvers too. Smaller details like the mirror caps, door handles, badges and step rails also get a darker shadow like shade too. Other than that, they will now have a set of black painted 20-inch wheels to complete the midnight look. If you are not a big fan of all-black cars and would rather see some contrast, you can order the car in a different finish such as Gun Metallic gray and Pearl White.

The Midnight Edition package is not just limited to the car’s exterior. In the cabin, you will find Charcoal black accents together with black floor mats.

Nissan is recalling nearly 17,000 Frontiers in North America

Nissan Motor Co. is recalling 16,838 Frontier pickups in North America to fix an electrical glitch that could result to a fire, according to documents filed with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The documents showed that a circuit breaker in Frontier trucks from model years 2012-2014 may have been installed incorrectly at the carmaker’s Canton assembly site in Mississippi.

The incorrect installation of the circuit breaker could cause an electrical short and fire. According to the documents filed with NHTSA, the pickup’s power seat and sunroof functions might also be rendered inoperable by the glitch. A Nissan spokesman said there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.

He, however, said there is one report of smoke emitted from under a dashboard on a truck in Mexico in December 2013. Of the recalled vehicles, 13,535 are in the United States, 1,930 are in Mexico and 1,373 are in Canada. Dealers are to inspect the circuit breaker wire harness and if required, are to repair free of charge. The recall is expected to commence early March, according to the NHTSA documents.

Nissan is revitalising its dedication to the mid-sized pickup range, which has long been a part of its sales achievement in the U.S., with the production of the Frontier Diesel Runner Powered by Cummins. This project truck, which is founded on the Frontier Desert Runner 4x2 model, will both measure the market’s reaction to a Nissan mid-sized pickup truck that runs on diesel and determine a possible future plan for the Frontier.

The Frontier Diesel Runner Powered by Cummins comes just only six months after they announced the collaboration with Cummins Inc. to deliver a 5.0-litre turbo diesel V8 in the upcoming generations of Titan full-sized pickups that will come in the 2015 calendar year.

Frontier remains to be an incredible success story for Nissan, with over 60,000 vehicles sold in 2013. Nissan has always esteemed the mid-sized pickup truck segment, and with this technical study, Nissan is looking to investigate what the next generations of Frontiers’ potentials are. The company is always on the lookout for methods of customer engagement and innovation and for ways to take the segment in a revolutionary path.

Nissan North America was only too eager to fill the gap left when Ford Motor Co. withdrew from the U.S. compact pickup market. Ford disclosed plans to exit the U.S. compact pickup segment in 2011, and it had built its last U.S. Ranger in December."We felt it was an opportunity to capture market share and we went after it last year, and we went after it without increasing incentives," Al Castignetti, Nissan Division's U.S. sales chief.

Nissan has commenced an ad campaign to promote the Frontier as a cheaper alternative to full-sized pickups.  Following Ford’s exit plans disclosure in 2011, Nissan posted a 28% increase in U.S. sales of the Frontier sales to 51,700 units. The company also posted a 17% hike in U.S. sales of cars and trucks to 944,073 cars.

Ford, meanwhile, logged a 28% increase in U.S. sales of the Ranger to 70,832 units, outselling Nissan at the same segment. Ford’s F-series also outsold Nissan’s Titan at full-sized pickup segment by 22,000 units at 585,000.

Nissan is celebrating the 1,000,000th Nissan Frontier pickup truck that was built last week at its manufacturing plant in Smyrna, Tenn., according to a report from Automotive News. Niche automakers such as Bantam and Crosley were among the first to sell small trucks in the U.S. but Nissan was the first mainstream seller.

Nissan’s Datsun 1000 was exported to the U.S. in 1959. It had a load capacity of a quarter of a ton and it was powered by a 1000-cc, 37-horsepower four-cylinder engine.

Nissan released a 1200-cc version that had a 60 hp rating next. Nissan sold only a few hundred of these pickups annually until the arrival of the Datsun 520 pickup in 1965 when it saw annual sales go up to over 15,000.

Because of failure to meet the requirements of child restraint anchorage systems (federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 225), Nissan is issuing a service campaign in the US and is calling back 951 Frontier vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that the affected vehicles include those produced from June 10, 2010 through June 26, 2010.
