Nissan promises a shocking design for the next Murano and Maxima

Nissan global design chief Shiro Nakamura has made a pledge that within two years, we will be surprised with the designs of the next versions of the Nissan Maxima sedan and Murano crossover. When interviewed by Automotive News, Nakamura said that the first Murano in 2002 had stunned people. Nissan’s inspiration this time is the third-generation Murano from the Terra Concept.

The Terra is set to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show. It is a wild fuel-cell concept car with a ground clearance that has been elevated, a chopped roofline, and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. This striking vehicle won’t ever be offered in showrooms. Several of its styling features give us a preview of the new Murano’s design.

A new version of the Nissan Murano is scheduled to make its debut in 2014. At this time, it will transfer the production of U.S.-spec versions from Japan to Tennessee. Nissan will be able to raise profits if it builds the model in the U.S. rather than if it’s exported from Japan. The first Nissan Murano will make its debut in 2002 while a new version will be presented in 2009.

2018 Nissan Maxima comes with subtle updates and starts from $33,905

To keep the Nissan Maxima interesting, the Japanese automaker gives the 2018 model year a number of small tweaks. Some of these include standard Android Auto, which is a new feature added to its infotainment system’s existing support for Apple CarPlay. Passengers in the back seat now get a pair of USB ports where they can charge their devices. Furthermore, Nissan lets customers choose from a wider colour palette, including this new Carnelian Red paint paired with a blacked out grille, as you can see in the photos.

That’s not all, as automatic emergency braking is now considered a standard feature in the Nissan’s 2018 lineup, and that includes the Maxima. The emergency braking system makes use of radar to monitor or to “see” how far other vehicles are from you. When other vehicles get too close, the system signals the driver in case of a possible collision. And when there is no response from the driver, the system will automatically reduce the car’s speed.

Customers have no option when it comes to the drivetrain, as the only available one would be a 3.5 liter V6 that produces as much as 300 horsepower (224 kilowatts), paired to a CVT that brings power to the front wheels.

Nissan Motor Corp. gave a special treatment to the global launch of the redesigned Murano to make sure that the crossover gets the much-needed attention and demand. But, it seems like the resulting demand for the Murano might be too much for Nissan to handle.

With dealers in the United States asking the entire production for the crossover, retailers in other markets may not have a single Murano to sell when its rollout starts on the second week of December. However, Nissan’s assembly line in Mississippi is built to handle production of the Murano for 118 markets, including Europe and Japan.

John Martin, Nissan's North America senior vice president for manufacturing, supply chain management and purchasing, remarked that while they are tasked to produce 94,000 Muranos, the carmaker’s American dealers are asking for “every last one we can make.”

When Nissan Motor Corp. unveiled the first Murano crossover around 12 years ago, heads turned and eyes were fixed on its curves and body. It hopes to replicate the same feat with the redesigned 2015 Murano, which boasts of curvier and more sensual body lines. Not only that, the crossover now boasts of an interior that is more elegant and more spacious seating, featuring fewer control buttons, heated ergonomic rear seats and a panoramic moonroof.

With the new Murano, Nissan hopes to appeal to upscale empty nesters and near-luxury buyers. Scott Pak, senior product manager for the 2015 Murano, remarked that the crossover is not for 34-year-olds, but for those aged 45 and above.

He said that these people wanted a “nice car” as a reward from years of raising kids, unlike those 34-year-olds. Despite the impending arrival of the new crossover late this year, the current model still managed to post a 12-percent jump in January-September sales to 34,823 units. While Nissan has yet to reveal the pricing for the third-generation Murano, the current version carries a starting tag of $29,390, including shipping.

The oddly designed Nissan Cube and Murano CrossCabriolet will be discontinued starting model year 2015. Both the Cube and the CrossCabriolet are epitome of Nissan's yearning to challenge the auto market with diverging designs.

Nissan decided to discontinue the Cube -- which was rolled out in the United States in 2009 – after posting a 31-percent drop in sales in the in the first six months of 2014 to just 2,294 units.

When the 2008-2009 recession led to slumping sales in traditional US auto segments, Nissan believed that presented an opportunity to appeal to young buyers by introducing a boxy subcompact that despite its lower power, promises 30 mpg in highway fuel economy.

The next redesigned Nissan Maxima sedan will look almost identical to the Sport Sedan Concept that Nissan unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show when it is rolled out in the United States this fall, Nissan North America Chairman Jose Munoz disclose at the New York Auto Show.

Nissan recently unveiled its 2015 Murano crossover that looks so similar to the Resonance Concept the carmaker has displayed. Munoz said that the difference between the Sports Sedan Concept and the new Murano will be very small.

The four-door concept features a lowered downward curving hood line and dons the wide low stance of a sports car. Concept cars unveiled at auto shows are usually more bold and daring than carmakers intend the production unit to be as they are intended to draw attention to the nameplate, to their broader design direction, or to new ideas and attitudes.

Nissan Motor Corp. is hoping that its redesigned Nissan Murano that would be unveiled at the New York Auto Show this week would be able to grab attention and capture more sales. In effect, Nissan would be trying to emulate a similar case as with the Hyundai Sonata, which became a serious mid-sized sedan contender following its styling overhaul in 2009.

Nissan brand's global design chief Mamoru Aoki is seeking answers on how the brand's so-so image and how to transform the Altima sedan into one of the top mid-sized family cars. He is hoping that the answer lies in the new design language that will make its debut in the third-generation Murano crossover.

The new Murano boasts of a chiseled aerodynamic look similar to the Resonance concept vehicle unveiled at the 2013 Detroit auto show. The Murano would serve as litmus test as to whether the design language would provide success to its sedans, the real focus of the overhaul. Aoki told Automotive News that its sedans are weak image-wise, with not so strong an impact on the market.

Back in 2013 at the Detroit Auto Show, Nissan unveiled the Resonance Concept and gave us a glimpse at its future plans. Today, the Japanese company unveiled the 2015 Nissan Murano and honestly we are speechless, as it is one of the sexiest crossover we’ve seen. Clearly inspired by the Resonance Concept, the 2015 Murano carries forward new Nissan design direction featuring the V-Motion front end, the LED boomerang lights, “floating” roof and efficient aerodynamics.

Nissan will bring the 2015 Murano at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, which will open its doors from Friday, April 18 through Sunday, April 27, 2014. Under the hood, we find a standard 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine bolted to an advanced Xtronic transmission. Just like the previous version, the 2015 Murano will be available in front-wheel drive or Intuitive All-Wheel Drive.

New Murano comes with plenty of technology features such as NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps, 8-inch color display with multi-touch control, 11-speaker Bose premium audio system and Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System.

Nissan has launched a teaser video for its redesigned 2015 Murano, ahead of the Mid-sized crossover debut at the New York Auto Show on April 16. “When you see the new Murano, the next Maxima and the future Titan, you will see the improvements we made and the efforts we made to reinforce our organization,” Jose Munoz, Nissan’s North American Chairman, told Automotive News in January.

Nissan considered the redesigned Murano as a halo vehicle as it bids to improve its profitability. Nissan posted the least profits among Japanese carmakers in the last quarter. United States sales chief Fred Diaz told Automotive News in February that they aim to grow sales as helped by the momentum of the 2014 Rogue compact crossover that arrived in November and the 2015 Murano due in the fall.

He remarked that they will place more emphasis on being profitable. Sales of the Murano dropped 14 percent in 2013 to 44,684 units. In the first two months of 2014, Nissan posted a 13-percent fall in Murano sales to 6,077 units.

Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn has ordered to shift the production of the Murano crossover from Japan to Canton, Miss., as part of a promise to reduce the carmaker’s dependence on Japanese manufacturing and be more competitive in North America. The shift is set to occur during the second half of 2014, when the next-generation Murano is expected to be rolled out.

The Murano will become the eighth model on Canton's plate as well the third nameplate that Ghosn has shifted out of Japan in recent months. Around 90 percent of Muranos are produced at Nissan's Kyushu site in Japan.

Around 70 percent of the plant's production was exported to the United States. Nissan assembles the Murano in China and Russia. Nissan's Smyrna plant in Tennessee has just commenced building the Leaf electric vehicle, which is meant to compete in the US since the carmaker started importing it from Japan in December 2010.

The 2013 Nissan Murano will feature several equipment and color changes as well as have its pricing moderately adjusted, as the base model will cost $30,340. At one time, the Murano was named a styling leader in the two-row crossover segment. Even today, it’s still one of the more attractive models currently available.

One model only increased by less than $100 while several increased by over $1000. It still is available with the 260-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 and CVT transmission, unchanged from last year’s model. The most significant change for the 2013 model year is the availability of two new colors and a new Value Package on the SV Trim.

The SV Value Package comes with a power liftgate, 9-speaker Bose audio system with dual rear subwoofers, and a navigation system. This package costs $2270, which is $830 cheaper than if the features were individually purchased. The Navigation and Platinum Edition packages are both equipped with Nissan’s set of Safety Shield technologies, including the Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

Nissan Motor Co. will transfer the production of the Murano crossover from Japan to its Smyrna, Tenn., plant sometime in 2014, which is when the Murano is slated to have a full model modification, according to Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo business daily. This is part of Nissan’s plan to overhaul production while the yen continues to soar.

In 2011, Nissan delivered 85,000 Muranos in 2011 at plants in Japan, Russia and China. However, 90% were built at Nissan’s Kyushu plant in southwestern Japan. Around 70% of what’s built at this plant is exported to the U.S. Nissan has yet to comment on this issue. By transferring the Murano’s production line to Smyrna, it will mean that the Murano will be built alongside the Altima and Maxima sedans.

These three are built on the same platform. Nissan hopes to lessen the impact of the exchange rate because of the vehicles exported from Japan. Previously, Nissan has announced that production of the Rogue compact crossover will be moved to Smyrna from Japan when that vehicle is redesigned for the 2014 model year. Through August, Nissan has sold 35,637 Muranos in the U.S., standing for a 4.2% increase.

Nissan has started taking orders for the 2012 Nissan Maxima, which has a price tag of $31,75 (for the S CVT model while SV CVT is priced from $34,450). The changes on the 2012 Nissan Maxima cover both the exterior and the cabin. The Maxima will be given a subtle facelift that includes the use of a new front grille, redesigned taillights, and new wheels that have a dynamic design and are available in 18- and 19-inch sizes. Several new details are also featured on the Maxima’s interior.

There is a white background light for the instrument cluster, a new color (Cafe Latte), new trimming that includes Dark Piano-hairline trimming and Atlantic Cherry wood tone. Numerous parts also come in a metallic finish. The knob for the audio and HVAC also gets a new design.

It is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 petrol unit that produces 294 hp and has a peak torque of 261 lb-ft (353 Nm). Buyers could opt for a new Limited Edition package (for the 3.5 S model), which offers headlights that have a smoked look, a set of High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, metallic trimming, 18-inch aluminum-alloy Dark Hyper Silver finish wheels, a compass integrated in the rear view mirror, dark satin chrome front grille, fog lights, a rear spoiler, and outside mirrors have built-in turn signals.
