Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept is a powerful astronomy labs on wheels

Nissan took visitors at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show to the stars when it collaborated with Lucasfilm and displayed six Star Wars-themed vehicles. Now, Nissan is taking the visitors at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles (also called Hannover Motor Show) to the dark sky with its latest creation – the all-new Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept.

A product of collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), the United Kingdom-developed Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept is all suited to do its job. Astronomers at ESA have been mapping the stars through the Gaia satellite. In fact, this project has already resulted to the observation of more than a billion stars. However, light pollution – especially from urban – makes the stars less visible. Thus, astronomers have been conducted follow-up observations from remote, hard-to-reach locations, also called as so-called "dark sky" places. In doing so, ESA’s astronomers have to bring them powerful telescopes, which have to transported safely and easily.

Embodying the Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept is appropriately suited to support this project. It is a solution to the enigma of how to transport telescopes for dark sky observations of the universe. It is properly equipped to tow on a bespoke off-road trailer the ultrahigh-power, observatory-class PlaneWave telescope, which can deliver detailed views of distant galaxies and nebulae.

Nissan Navara Off-Roader AT32 challenges Ford Ranger Raptor

Last month, we learned that Nissan filed a patent for the name “Off Roader.” We took this as a strong hint that it won’t be long before they launch a model that will rival the Ford Ranger Raptor. Well apparently, we guessed it right, as Nissan had just launched the Navara Off Roader AT32 at the 2018 Commercial Vehicle Show held in Birmingham, United Kingdom. In fact, the off roader looks like it is heady to go head to head with its American rival as well as other sporty pickup trucks. But there are some things that you should be aware of.

Nissan’s newest Off Roader AT32 was built together with Arctic Trucks, a company based in lceland that specializes in building hardcore 4WD vehicles that can be driven on any terrain. As you can see, the “AT” in the truck’s name comes from the company’s name while “32” is an indication of the performance pickup’s 32-inch tires that are wrapped around the 17-inch alloy rims, which the off road company had also designed. The tires that were installed on the pickup were specially chosen for excellent off- and on-road performance.

The Off Roader AT32 had also been given a custom suspension, which raises its ground clearance to 9.6 inches (24.3 centimeters), there is a noticeable difference considering that the regular Navara only had a ground clearance of 8.8 inches (22.3 centimeters). However, the said model is still 1.5 inches lower compared to the Ford Ranger Raptor.

Nissan officially unveils its Navara-based SUV dubbed as Terra

In the past couple of months, we have been seeing spy photos of the Nissan Terra, and finally, it is time to see the first official images of Nissan’s Navarra based SUV. The prototype is scheduled to make its debut at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show that will take place in April. And we are not surprised as to why the People’s Republic will host the worldwide unveiling of the said model. That is because the Nissan Terra will be first sold in the Chinese market, beginning in spring this year.

As for the exterior, the Nissan Terra has not changed that much, as most of the design elements of the pickup truck have been carried over. Similar with the interior, it doesn’t get many upgrades compared to its predecessor, so both models look very similar.

Having said that, the automaker wants to make it clear that the 2018 Terra is focused more on the company’s midterm plan which we know as the “Nissan MOVE to 2022”, while focusing on an array of frame and LCV models.

Nissan considers plan to build performance version of Navara that could beat Ford Ranger Raptor

While Ford prepares for the production of the new Ranger Raptor in Europe, other automakers like Nissan are also looking into the idea of an off road oriented pickup. During an interview with Australian publication Motoring, the Japanese automaker suggested a similar go fast treatment similar to that of the new Ranger.

Meanwhile, Nissan’s Australian division has already urged executives to carry on with the more powerful Navarra. This project has not been officially confirmed, also because the small pickup shares the same platform with the more luxurious Mercedes-Benz X Class. Therefore, it will not be possible to see Nissan adopt the same 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6 found on the new Benz.

Ashwani Gupta, Renault Nissan’s global light commercial vehicle boss, informed the publication that he will soon be meeting with Australian executives during the launch of the Series 3 D23 Navara. He also mentioned that he would be open to seeing a more rugged Navara.
