GM teams with IBM to create new OnStar Go cognitive mobility platform in 2017

General Motors has teamed up with OnStar and IBM to create another technological innovation in the automotive world. The OnStar Go, General Motor’s new cognitive mobility platform, aims to help its customers “connect and interact” and purchase items even when on the go.

OnStar Go will make use of the IBM Watson, IBM’s artificial intelligence software and tech platform that reveals various requested data with the use of natural language processing and machine learning. It will then go through the data to identify patterns in the driver’s preferences including their decisions and habits; this information will then be sent to brand and marketing professionals who work with IBM and OnStar for them to provide individualized location-based interactions with their target audience and customers. In short, OnStar Go will provide in-car advertising in each GM model.

This new technology will be making its way in future GM models, and will be the equivalent of a Google Assistant or Siri. It will serve the same purpose as these smartphone assistants, suggesting nearby restaurant offers and even locate the nearest gas station.

GM to launch new vehicle-prognosis service via OnStar connection

General Motors plans to launch a new vehicle-prognosis service this year that provides OnStar subscribers feedback on their driving habits. GM also plans to launch another service in which some Chevrolet customers will be notified of potential trouble with their battery, fuel pump or other components.

The data collected by sensors in the vehicle will be streamed via OnStar's 4G LTE high-speed connection. According to GM, both services will be included for free for regular OnStar subscribers who opt in.

Alicia Boler-Davis, GM's senior vice president for global connected customer experience, said in a statement that only the carmaker offers the vehicle-prognostics service, which marks a new chapter in its pursuit to provide convenience and the best overall service in the auto industry.

2015 Cadillac CTS shown in an OnStar commercial

The 2015 Cadillac CTS didn’t make its official debut yet, but General Motors already featured the vehicle in its latest OnStar commercial. The first thing we saw was the redesigned front grille and the new Cadillac crest that was first featured on the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe. In the commercial, the 2015 Cadillac CTS highlights the OnStar with 4G LTE, which turns it into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Featuring the new dark Adriatic Blue and Cristal White (replacing the White Diamond) exterior paint options, the 2015 Cadillac CTS promises to bring SMS text messaging, Lane Change Alert and Lane Keep Assist.

Under the hood, we expect to see the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 272 hp (203 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, bolted to the paddle-shift eight-speed transmission.

GM to revise OnStar service as 4G LTE provider in vehicles

General Motors will remold its OnStar service as a provider of high-speed connectivity to vehicles, loaded with a portfolio of infotainment features. The revised service will commence this summer on some vehicles as a package of infotainment apps, with current safety and security features still available. OnStar will also offer a Wi-Fi hot spot, streaming radio, vehicle diagnostics, weather reports and other apps through a high-speed 4G LTE data connection as provided by AT&T.

"It will be introduced on everything from entry-level hatches to Silverados," said Tim Nixon, OnStar's chief technology officer, during a Dec. 11, 2013 presentation for journalists. Nixon said that the connected features will be fitted first on the Chevrolet Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt, which will get 4G LTE this summer.

Next on the list are the Equinox, Silverado, Spark and Spark EV. GM will also install 4G LTE connectivity on vehicles for Buick, GMC and Cadillac, although the carmaker has yet to confirm a launch date for those brands.

Chevrolet Volt owners will be able to calculate total charging costs in comparison with the total home energy use through a new app named EcoHub that OnStar is presently testing. With EcoHub, the Volt owner can monitor energy on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. EcoHub gathers total home energy use information from the local electric company or a smart meter firm to compare it with Volt charging information to display the Volt’s percentage of total energy use.

EcoHub also measures total energy cost based on local electricity rates. It has a “Ticker” screen that shows total electric-powered miles driven compared to total miles driven as well as gallons of fuel saved in EV mode. The initial tests of the EcoHub app will be conducted by Volt owners who live in the Pecan Street smart grid living community in Austin.

OnStar is expected to later make EcoHub available for Volt owners throughout the country. The 2013 Chevrolet Volt got improvements in battery density, leading to a 38-mile EV range and an EPA-rated 98 MPGe. In September, 2851 Volt units were sold. This is its highest monthly sales yet. For the first nine months of 2012, Chevrolet sold 16,348 Volts. In a release, Paul Pebbles, global manager, Electric Vehicle and Smart Grid Services, said that eventually, this app will benefit everyone who drives electric vehicles.

A software glitch that has an impact on the OnStar communication systems has prompted General Motors to halt the sales of several 2013 vehicles making up 60,000 vehicles. According to GM spokesman Alan Adler, GM will be repairing the problem on its dealerships. The models that are affected by this issue are the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox and Volt; the Cadillac XTS and ATS; the Buick Verano and the GMC Terrain, as well as the 2012 Cadillac SRX.

Adler said that this may be completed in “days, maybe into next week.” He talked about the nature of this defect. Because of a software problem, OnStar's crash notification system is prevented from sending an alert to the OnStar call center in accidents that don’t set off an airbag deployment, like a rear-end collision.

He clarified that this glitch doesn’t affect the crash notification system worse accidents that trigger the airbags. This glitch also doesn’t stop airbags from deploying. The OnStar emergency button is unaffected and should like the driver to an emergency adviser as it typically does. GM has given the approval for these vehicles to go on sale after GM made the repairs via a software upgrade flashed remotely through the OnStar system.

The new design of OnStar buttons in 2013 vehicles more aptly represents its software updates, General Motors said. Rather than a white phone with a circle around it, the voice command button (which was referred to as hands-free calling button in the past) now has a general speech icon.

Aside from placing/receiving hands-free calls, the button now gives users the chance to access a saved route, check hands-free calling minutes and use OnStar Virtual Advisor, which comes with saved MapQuest directions or traffic and updates about the weather and stock.

Furthermore, the voice command button can better link up with infotainment systems like Chevrolet MyLink, Cadillac CUE and Buick/GMC IntelliLink. The emergency button now uses an internationally known SOS symbol rather than a white cross rooted in a red circle.

Those who drive a General Motors Co. vehicle can use an OnStar service to rent out their under-used vehicles, permitting potential renters to unlock the doors using their smart phones. GM announced that it has partnered with online car-sharing marketplace RelayRides, which was launched in Boston in June 2010.

OnStar spokesman Vijay Iyer said that at the end of last year, GM's venture-capital arm made an investment in the company. In-vehicle service company OnStar is famous for getting drivers connected to live operators who could offer directions or call emergency help when there’s an accident.

RelayRides developers got access to several OnStar services such as features that can find the vehicle and remotely unlock the doors. The doors can be unlocked by renters by using their phones or by responding to text messages.

General Motors has named Mary Chan to be its vice president in charge of global connected consumers – a recently created post that oversees its OnStar and infotainment divisions. Chan served as Dell’s senior vice president and general manager of enterprise mobility solutions and services since 2009.

GM spokesman Vijay Iyer said that GM wanted to integrate GM’s OnStar telematics unit with its increasing infotainment offerings. These two operations shared some engineering resources but they were separated managed by different executives. Iyer said that it’s about forming a more coherent approach throughout the organization on what’s offered for the connected customer.

Chan will be reporting to GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky, who oversees OnStar. In 2011, GM has unveiled new infotainment systems across its brands, such as MyLink for Chevrolet and IntelliLink for Buick and GMC.

Clues have been appearing on what Chevrolet will dub its unnamed new model. Bloggers and enthusiasts have been gathering and piecing together clues that lead to a conclusion: the new model will be dubbed as Chevrolet SS. The ironic thing about it is that the source was Chevrolet’s own parent, General Motors.

OnStar’s online site listed GM models compatible with a mobile app that allows remote vehicle access through smartphones. Interestingly, the site contained a list of Chevrolet cars for the 2014 model year, and there sprouted the name “SS Performance.”

The discovery was purely an accidental one. Tech blogger Christopher Price said that he discovered GM’s blunder while searching for the OnStar vehicle profile for his 2009 Pontiac G6. The list has since disappeared from OnStar’s site after someone informed them of the slip-up.

Linda Marshall has resigned as president of the OnStar Corp., a subsidiary of General Motors Corp, to “pursue other interests.” Marshall’s resignation came one year she was selected by GM CEO Dan Akerson to head the Onstar. In a statement, GM said that under Marshall’s leadership, OnStar was able to restructure the organization and to implement important long-term initiatives “to further grow the business in the future and strengthen its foundation.”

Following Marshall’s resignation, Terry Inch, director of OnStar sales, marketing and business planning, temporarily oversees the unit’s daily operations while GM has yet to find a replacement.

Prior to her stint as OnStar president, she had worked for Akerson when he was chief executive of Nextel Communications Inc. She was appointed president of the telematics unit in February 2011, replacing public relations executive Chris Preuss. Among her accomplishments as OnStar president was the expansion of the GM units into overseas markets, particularly China.

Chevrolet Volt owners may soon be able to recharge their plug-in hybrid with renewable energy via a new OnStar service. This technology depends on wind forecasts to show the availability and amount of renewable energy on the electric grid. The predictions are generated by PJM Interconnection, an energy management firm that serves 60 million U.S. users, located mostly in the Midwest, and eastern and southeastern U.S.

OnStar makes use of data from these forecasts to simultaneously handle the charging of multiple Volts and preferably match the availability of renewable energy. OnStar said that the generally, the peak period for renewable energy generation from wind is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., a period when many Volt cars are being charged by their owners.

OnStar said that it is developing a mobile app to inform customers when renewable energy is available. This technology will be shown this week at the 2012 DistribuTECH Conference and Exhibition in San Antonio by OnStar and Google.

OnStar advisors are known to have helped recover over 500 stolen General Motors’ vehicles monthly but recently, the feature has been helping retrieve even the competitors’ stolen vehicles. Last Dec. 18, a stolen 2006 Chrysler 300 was recovered with the help of OnStar. The vehicle’s owner is OnStar subscriber Jean Franklin of Gresham, Ore.

It was only two days before the theft that Franklin bought OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle), the new aftermarket system that comes standard with Stolen Vehicle Assistance. This security feature enables OnStar Advisors to take advantage of the product’s internal GPS to find the location of a stolen vehicle that was reported to authorities.

Here’s a timeline of what transpired on Sunday. At 7:30 a.m., Franklin called OnStar to report her stolen vehicle. OnStar gave the vehicle’s location to the Gresham Police Department. The police pulled over the car and placed the suspect in custody within just 64 minutes of the original call. Aaron Turnage, a Gresham Police Department officer who worked with OnStar to find the car, said that OnStar was “crucial” in the recovery of the vehicle.

GM announced today that the OnStar FMV, its aftermarket rearview mirror, already helped connect the crash victim to both emergency assistance and his wife. Recently, Joseph Ortez suffered a crash in his Nissan Sentra when driving through a Los Angeles intersection. Although he was not critically injured, Cortez was unable to get out of the vehicle and was experiencing a sharp pain in his shoulder.

After the crash he was automatically connected to OnStar, where an Advisor provided Emergency Medical Dispatch instructions, while another Advisor contacted 9-1-1 and directed first responders to the scene.

Thanks to them, first responders arrived on the scene within 10 minutes of the crash. “I was in so much pain. I didn’t have my bearings. I didn’t know which way I was facing or how hurt I was. I was thinking there was no way I can make these phone calls and let someone know where I am at,” said Cortez. What is more interesting is that Joseph Cortez had the OnStar FMV for only three weeks and it already showed its value.

U.S. senator Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission should open an investigation on General Motors Co.'s OnStar vehicle navigation system, which continues to get information from customers who have canceled the service. Subscribers received an e-mail last week from OnStar, telling them that even if they have stopped using the service, the vehicles will continue to be tracked.

The e-mail stated that customers who terminated the service after Dec. 1 have to contact OnStar to prevent the company from getting data under the revised policy.

The letter that Schumer wrote to the agency's chairman Jon Leibowitz stated that the FTC has to investigate the OnStar policy to find out if it is considered as a practice that’s unfair or deceptive., according to Autonews. In a separate letter to the GM unit, Schumer asked that OnStar should scrap the changes. In a news release, Schumer said that OnStar’s move is “one of the most brazen invasions of privacy in recent memory.”

After having spent 15 years trying to make it in North America, OnStar is now expanding its vehicle communications service in global markets. OnStar, a GM unit, aims to enter markets of the Middle East and Latin America.

It also seeks to expand in China, which it entered in 2009. At the 2011 Management Briefing Seminars recently held, OnStar president Linda Marshall said that there are other world markets being considered.

But she admits that there will be several cultural challenges that will have to be resolved. She cited an example in China where the company starts the employment process by asking newly hired operators for their call center to get into a car and then giving them a demonstration of the service.

General Motors, along with OnStar, is preparing to launch the first real-world pilot of smart grid solutions for electric vehicles this year. This pilot program will be participated in by employees of regional utilities.

They will be tasked to drive leased Chevrolet Volts as their everyday vehicles. For the accurate monitoring and management of the energy used by the vehicles, the OnStar Advanced Telematics Operations Management System (ATOMS) will be used. From the data gathered, the utility will get a deep understanding of when the electric vehicles are recharged and where.

It also gets information on the demand response, enabling the utility to cut peak demand by switching EV charging to non-peak hours. Nick Pudar, OnStar vice president of planning and business development, said that while other OEMs only discuss smart grid technology, OnStar is “moving beyond research and development projects to a program in the real world."

Best Buy stores throughout the U.S. have started to take preorders for the OnStar FMV, the first boxed version of the OnStar’s “blue button” automotive safety and security services that could be used on 90 million older vehicles that are presently being driven on U.S. roads. OnStar FMV starts selling on July 24. It retails for $299.99, plus $75 for installation. The service plans for OnStar FMV are priced from $18.95 each month, or $199 annually.

OnStar President Linda Marshall said that since January when the OnStar FMV was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show, thousands have signed up to receive a notification when this innovative product is ready to buy.

She asserts that via Best Buy, these people could now enhance their Fords, Toyotas, Chryslers as well as other brands. Best Buy, which serves as the strategic retail partner of OnStar, offers on-site installation through its network of over 1,000 auto bays, which are staffed by over 1,400 Mobile Electronics Certified Professional.

With OnStar's new prototype technology, drivers can host a video conference, get live traffic-cam feeds or even adjust their home thermostat. General Motors Co.'s telematics division is considering those applications and more under a new partnership with Verizon Wireless that has a goal of delivering 4G mobile broadband technology to GM vehicles.

The Verizon deal is an important step in OnStar's evolution from an emergency-response and diagnostics service to a full-blown infotainment system.

The deal would allow OnStar to offer services like voice-based Web browsing that are available on Ford Motor Co.'s Sync infotainment system. OnStar will show off the technology in a Buick LaCrosse research vehicle at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
